2 THEATRE AT ITS BEST MADE IN STRATFORD-UPON-AVON SHARED AROUND THE WORLD FOR EVERYONE Old stories are so often the ones we return to again and again to make sense of the world around us. Whether it s a fairy tale or a family anecdote, we constantly retell the past to help understand our present. As our Rome collection of plays continues into autumn, we see how Shakespeare, his contemporaries and modern writers also seek inspiration in history and myth to fuel stories that still resonate in Rome Season Director, Angus Jackson, returns to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre with the last of Shakespeare s Roman plays,. Sope Dirisu a rising talent who originally emerged through our very own Open Stages programme working with amateur theatre groups is an exciting. Another new voice emerges in the Swan Theatre: Kimberley Sykes, Associate Director on our Dream 16 tour makes her RSC directorial debut with Christopher Marlowe s tragedy,, Queen of Carthage. Our Swan Theatre season continues with Imperium, a new adaptation of Robert Harris epic Cicero trilogy by Mike Poulton (Wolf Hall/Bring Up the Bodies, 2013/14). This thrilling political saga tells the story of the rise and fall of the great Roman orator, Cicero. Ovid was Shakespeare s favourite poet and references to these classical stories litter his plays. We have lost our cultural familiarity with many of these and I feel passionate about reigniting our understanding of these wonderful fables. Over three weeks, eight events will explore Ovid s stories from many angles; I hope that, by coming along, you will gain an even richer appreciation of Shakespeare. New voices resound around The Other Place once again with two Mischief Festivals. The first, in May, sees the return to the RSC of writer Tom Morton-Smith (Oppenheimer, 2015) and the co-writing debut of Matt Hartley and Kirsty Housley with a double bill of provocative short plays, The Earthworks and Myth. The second festival will see The Other Place taken over by an experimental and vibrant piece of theatre: more details will follow soon. We round off 2017 with two Royal Shakespeare Theatre productions which are proof of our claim to be theatre at its best. One of our greatest living writers, David Edgar, reasserts the social conscience of the ultimate story of redemption: Charles Dickens A Carol, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh (Alice in Wonderland, 2001). Meanwhile, Christopher Luscombe (Love s Labour s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing, 2014 & 2016) brings his dazzling energy to Night. It s the perfect end to your year. 7 SWAN THEATRE Following his stunning RSC adaptation of Hilary Mantel s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies (2013/14), Mike Poulton turns his pen to the thrilling world of Ancient Rome with a brand new version of Robert Harris best-selling Cicero novels. This epic event will be staged as six plays, presented in two performances, each with two intervals, and will be directed by RSC Artistic Director, Gregory Doran. Cicero, the greatest orator of his age, devoted all his energy and cunning to preserve the rule of law, and defend Rome s Republic against the predatory attacks of political rivals, discontented aristocrats, and would-be military dictators. Imperium follows Cicero s triumphs and disasters, through power struggles, civil wars, and personal highs and lows, told through the eyes of Tiro, his loyal secretary. Catiline, his aristocratic rival, is furious in defeat and refuses to accept the results of the election. He swears a blood oath to destroy Cicero, murder the government, and take Rome by force. Behind the conspiracy, Cicero suspects, lurks Julius Caesar young, ruthless, popular with the Roman mob and greedy for absolute power. As law and order begins to break down, who controls the mob controls Rome: Cicero, Catiline, Caesar or the charming but vicious playboy, Publius Clodius? Cicero has retired from politics. Julius Caesar dictator, and commander of Rome s armies is assassinated. Cicero sees his death as an opportunity to restore the Republic but the assassins, Brutus and Cassius, dither as power in Rome begins to fall into the lap of Mark Antony. Determined to prevent Antony imposing a military dictatorship on Rome, Cicero forms an unlikely alliance with the 19-year-old great-nephew and heir of Julius Caesar. Confident that he can control the boy and use him to destroy Mark Antony, Cicero sets out to save the Republic.
