2 DelCiampo, Matthew. Book Review. Florida Soul: From Racy Charles to KC and the Sunshine Band, by John Capouya (forthcoming, Florida Historical Quarterly). BOOKS UNDER REVIEW DelCiampo, Matthew. Listening for Locality: The Power of Place in Indie Music (under exclusive review, Indiana University Press). This work considers the role of place, nature, and environmentalism within American indie music. Combining ethnographic musical case studies with media and reception history analysis, I examine how three specific places the landscape, home, and the cabin in the woods operate within indie music narratives and reflect the place-based experiences common among white, middle- to upper-class Americans, who constitute the bulk of the genre s performers and audience. I theorize the concept of place formulation, which considers how a place is experienced, internally understood, outwardly projected, and perhaps misinterpreted. I consider within this genre-specific context how these place formulations are racialized, gendered, and positioned as proxies for nationalism, community affiliation, and socioeconomic privilege. The nexus of music, place, and culture often reflects existing hegemonic inequalities, sometimes subverts historical social structures, and always reveals the power of place within musical culture.
