2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Greetings Fellow Music Educators, Happy New Year! Congratulations to everyone who planned and organized special performance opportunities and concerts for their students and school communities in December. The dedication and hard work that you put into preparing students to perform is truly incredible. I hope that you have all enjoyed a restful and relaxing winter break and are feeling rejuvenated and ready for all of the excitement that 2018 has in store! The Manitoba Orff Chapter is dedicated to providing rich professional development opportunities to its members. The fall season is always very busy for the board, with a number of workshops during the first half of the school year. In September, we hosted Make n Take, a workshop where participants create visuals, manipulatives, and music-learning activities to take back to their classrooms. We also held our annual MOC/WSO Listening Workshops. Participants continue to be inspired by our study guide creators and presenters, who work hard and think creatively to create engaging and meaningful listening lessons for students. In October, I attended the 10 th annual AMAM Leadership Conference. This year s conference, Music for All-Inclusive Practise in Music Education, was filled with stories from guest speaker, Alvin Law, teachers, and students. It was so valuable to have time to reflect on and discuss the importance of inclusion and music education for all students and the great opportunity that inclusive music programs provide students to feel and sense of belonging, community, success, and accomplishment. The MMEA Tempo Conference also took place in October. This day was filled with amazing presenters and rich learning opportunities. Putting on a top-notch, world-class conference is no easy task, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Judy Giesbrecht and her team for all the work that they do to provide Manitoba music educators with this exceptional day to learn and grow. The day after Tempo, the MOC welcomed back clinician Tim Wiegand to present at our annual Fall Fiesta Workshop. Tim s energy was captivating and I was excited to hear that many of the workshop participants went back to their classrooms feeling energized by his enthusiasm and creativity, despite a busy weekend of professional development! At our Annual General Meeting (held during the lunch hour of Fall Fiesta), Marla Fontaine was presented with the Morna-June Morrow Award for Excellence in Music Education. Congratulations Marla! We took a moment to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our board members, and welcomed our MOC Board of Directors. I would like to thank our outgoing MOC President, Jewel Casselman, for all of her leadership and hard work over the last two years. In November 2017, the Manitoba Orff Chapter Board of Directors met in my home for our first meeting of the term. Some of us have been on the board for many years, and others have stepped up to volunteer with the MOC for the very first time. At our meeting, I asked our board members to introduce themselves and to say a few words about why they chose to join the MOC Board. Our board members shared inspirational stories, ideas, thoughts, and feelings about our unique and connected community of music educators here in Manitoba, about the importance of volunteering and giving back, and about their dedication to excellent music education for all children. I am looking forward to collaborating with members of our Board of Directors team and we are excited to represent and serve all of you, the members of the Manitoba Orff Chapter! continued on page 3 2

3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE continued Tell me, I forget, show me, I remember, involve me, I understand. -Carl Orff This is one of Orff s most famous quotes. Teaching with the Orff philosophy allows students to live this quote every time they are in our classrooms. They are given opportunities to learn as musicians in a holistic way; through doing and experiencing, playing and singing, moving and exploring, and creating and improvising. While we are all busy planning for the next lesson or concert, attending meetings, writing report cards, or attending to one of our many responsibilities as educators, we also need to remember the importance of taking time to continue to grow, and to do this the way Orff describes in his quote. If you have not attended an MOC workshop recently, I encourage you to attend one of our upcoming events. MOC workshops are presented by high-quality clinicians and provide music educators with a unique opportunity to learn in the same way we ask our students to learn; through doing and experiencing, playing and singing, moving and exploring, and creating and improvising. You will feel inspired and excited to get back to your classroom to try out new and engaging activities with your students! We have a number of upcoming events and workshops. Winter Workshop with Sean Fitzmaurice and Steph Davis is coming up on Saturday, February 10, Sean and Steph have been hard at work on their first publication. They will be presenting all new material and are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces and meeting some new friends too! MOC s annual Children s Day events take place in April. If you have never attended Children s Day, this is a great year to check it out. This unique event is both a day of professional development for teachers and a day of music making for children. Music educators are invited to register to attend on their own and take advantage of the opportunity to see experienced clinicians in action with students, or can register to attend with students and provide students with a great day of music making, all while experiencing a great day of PD. See our website, for more information. I am excited and honored to be your new Manitoba Orff Chapter President. I have enjoyed being a member of the MOC Board of Directors for the past four years and am feeling energized as I transition into this new position. Being a member of the MOC Board has given me an opportunity to get to know the members of the Manitoba Orff Chapter and to feel connected to our unique music educator community here in Manitoba. I am proud to be a member of our community and look forward to representing and serving the members of the Manitoba Orff Chapter! Submitted by Amanda Ciavarelli The 25 th Carl Orff Canada National Conference takes place in Niagara Falls, ON, from April 19- April 22. Cascade 2018 features an excellent line-up of presenters and is a great opportunity to learn and network with our music community. Please see the conference website for more information. 3

4 Manitoba has the distinct joy of being colder than most other places on Earth, and sometimes even Mars! What better way to spend these icy days than making and experiencing music in your classrooms, hallways, homes, cafes, and multiple performance venues around the city. After a long time away from Winnipeg, it is fascinating to return and witness the incredible music being made in this city and in a large part thanks to the quality music education we provide in our schools. Young musicians from our programs go on to have beautiful careers in music. Whether that be rocking out in an experimental group, making ethereal loop music in an art gallery, singing and dancing on Rainbow Stage, or sharing the concert hall stage with Philip Glass, Winnipeg s music scene is booming and we have a lot to be proud of. Advocating for music means a lot of things for us as music specialists, and one key part of that is supporting music in our communities. If the music in our city thrives on a professional level, our music education programs will continue to grow. Filling our concert halls, churches, bars and cafes with enthusiastic music aficionados shows the world what value we place on music. On top of all of that, experiencing great live music is invaluable professional development as an educator. Allow yourself to be swept away by the beauty of a performance; open yourself to learning a new technique; challenge yourself to listen to a new genre; enjoy, appreciate, marvel. We must fight against the complacency of our teacher bubble! Go to see something new you will thank yourself for it and walk away feeling inspired and refreshed. I challenge you all to go out into the cold this winter and experience some of the great music that Winnipeg has to offer. Here s just a quick sampling of some great performances coming up, featuring young musicians who have come from our music programs. 7 This was my first time attending a MOC Make n Take and boy, am I glad I did. I ve only been a music teacher for 2 years at 48 years old, you could say I m a late bloomer but you know what they say: Better late than never! This year the Make n Take was held on Tuesday, September 19th at Lakewood School. They said it was the highest attendance (probably on record!) that they ve had in a while so clearly it was a good decision to attend. It was a fun-filled evening that included some networking, some learning, some crafting, a lot of tracing and cutting and some pizza. Every part of it was valuable, in my opinion. The first session was with Jen Engbrecht and she had a bevy of music fractions for us to cut and colour. This is a great activity that will help all students with math and music. I love the cross-curricular activities! It was an excellent example of using tactile visuals to make sense of counting. The different colours and shapes make it so easy to create different rhythm patterns. The second session was with Julianna Remple who showed us how to refurbish our ratty mallets with wool but more importantly, she had power tools! I was very excited to learn that I could make my own mallets with a dollar store bouncy ball, a wooden dowel and a power drill. I will most definitely do this activity with my Grade 6 students. However, I will control the power drill that s just got blood written all over it. Next came pizza yum yum. After a short break of getting to know other MOC ers we headed to another session. The third session was with Julie Penny who did an amazing job with a sound story about Frogs. The take home included several resources on incorporating the life cycle of a frog and pairing it with music. Brilliant! The sound story included symbols for thunder and other sounds one would find where a frog dwells. The final session was with Naomi Garrett who conjured up a monster-eating-bag that just loves to gobble up rhythm cards or pitch cards. It was creative and will be a fun addition to my classroom. I just know this will be a hit with my students and can be adapted to any level/concept. There was so much to do and it was all fun! I look forward to many more encounters with MOC ers. 8 MOC/WSO WORKSHOP On Thursday, September 28 th, music teachers from across the province met at the Louis Riel School Division office to sing and dance and play to the repertoire that will be offered at the Adventures in Music Concerts this upcoming spring. We participated in classic lesson plans of Marcelline Moody s with a fresh perspective and treatment provided by the MOC presenters Dawn, Lynn, Mari-Lynn and Jennifer. I particularly loved Dawn s lessons for Harry Freedman s Conga from Oiseaux Exotiques and Tchaikovsky s Waltz from Swan Lake. Dawn had colorful charts for the visual learners, speech patterns for the aural learners and lots of movement for the kinesthetic learners among us! With Lynn, we danced the three dances from the Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock always a fun, if stately time. I was one of the lucky two to ride a hobbyhorse in The Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner while others moved their scarves to the music and sang. Jennifer did a wonderful job of presenting Ravel s En Bateau and Smetana s Furiant. We did some indigenous singing and drumming with Mari-Lynn for Carrabre s In the Beginning and explored staccato and legato for Hadyn s The Clock Symphony. I appreciated the honesty of each presenter. If something didn t work, they changed it. Some activities challenged their comfort zones. I felt like I could relate to the presenters and take their lessons back to my own classroom to do according to their lesson plans or to modify as the demands of my schools require. There were a few new elements to this year s session. It was the first time the music and lesson guide were offered as a download as opposed to being provided to each participant. This was a great development, as it offered the choice for those folks who are concerned about paper usage or simply prefer technology to use their devices while others could print the sections that were applicable for their programs. We met on a Thursday rather than the traditional Friday. Although we were all quite tired by all the terrific activities, and many of us were probably feeling as though it were Friday, I think this was a fine change as well. The MOC board members looked awesome in their matching black t-shirts! As always, the food was plentiful and tasty with special kudos to Amanda s mom for making us cookies! Jewel handled the audio with both grace and humour. This professional development is such a precious time to not only learn this excellent repertoire for such an incredible event, but because we can meet as a professional learning community with our peers and friends. Thank-you, MOC board, for a job well done! Submitted by Lori Bodner 8

9 FALL FIESTA Bringing Back the Joy! was the theme of this year s Fall Fiesta presented by Tim Wiegand. Using lesson plans and ideas from his resource book Energize your Music Room, Tim brought the energy and kept us motivated throughout the day! Tim engaged us in exciting and fun lesson plans to take back to our classrooms, all the while describing in great detail his tips for classroom management. We began the day with Crazy Letters, a simple way to teach pulse and accents using the alphabet. Weaved throughout his lesson are ways to modify the lesson to keep students engaged, by changing the pulse, having students make decisions on the next steps, and suggestions to change the pulse. All of Tim s instrumental lesson plans have a variety of options to make it work for your classroom and also the form of the piece to help organize your instrumentation. Tim s classroom management ideas can be categorized into three areas. Teachers establish clear rules and practiced routines and procedures. Teachers have a visual system for both rewards and consequences for following classroom rules. Teachers have activities that require imagination, play, and creativity. In addition, Tim s classroom rules are simple and general to cover all issues: Follow directions, keep hands, feet, and instruments to yourself, be kind, and join in all activities. Tim also encourages teachers to get students to play instruments every single class and has his classroom set up in a square formation so all instruments are ready to go at all times. Xylophones line one side, glockenspiels and metallophones line another, drums and non-pitched percussion make up the third side, with the fourth being his white board/front of the classroom. Instrument rules are, you guessed it, simple! We were reminded often throughout the day the following rules: If I play I will sit, If I click I will sit, If I hit I will sit, If I talk I will sit! All participants tried their best to follow the rules, no one wanted to be FIRED! from our instruments! The format of the day was organized so that we experienced a variety of media from instrumentation, rhythmic patterns, creative movement, and of course, games! Tim s game ideas and props engaged us all in his lessons and were a highlight of the day. From creative movement games like Pop Goes the Statue and Somebody s Watching Me, to rhythmic and instrumental games like Card Shark (who doesn t like a shark hat?) to the oh so exciting The Wars Star game where a few lucky participants got to faceoff with Darth Wiegand using boomwhackers. Tim s energetic spirit inspired us all and reminded us why we love teaching music, because it s fun! His resource, Energize Your Music Room comes with ready to go detailed lesson plans along with accompaniment CD. The CD with interactive whiteboard visuals is extra, but in my opinion well worth the investment. Thank you Tim for energizing us all and giving us a wonderful Fall Fiesta. 10 Marla Fontaine is dedicated to the Orff approach in her regular K-6 music classes but also provides extracurricular activities to her students through the Orff Club, Recorder Club, multiple choral opportunities at primary and elementary levels as well as a 7/8 Vocal Jazz Ensemble. She strongly supports the Manitoba Orff Chapter and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concert programs and Brandon s Children s Day with annual student participation. Marla has worked as a guest conductor and clinician for several community choirs such as the Louis Riel Honour Choir, Westman Youth Choir, and done workshops with Eastman and Central Manitoba Choirs. She has presented at various conferences including the DaCapo Conference at Brandon University and MOC s Brandon Children s Day. Over the past six years, she has been a board member for the Brandon Conservatory Choir where she is currently Website Manager. In her own time she performs with two vocal groups: Das femmes is an 8 member female vocal ensemble and Konektis is an adult choir. She participates yearly in the Adult Provincial Honour Choir. Marla continues her professional development by attending Carl Orff Canada National Conferences, MOC workshops, Choral Canada s Podium and most recently attended the American Choral Directors Association National Conference in Minnesota. She has served on the Canadian Music Educators Association as Manitoba representative. Marla is also a great advocate throughout the Brandon music community. As Chair of Brandon s Children s Day and an active member of the Brandon Music Monday Planning Committee she uses these two outlets to spread the Orff message to parents, administrators and music teachers. I quote her sponsor, Brittany Goulet, in saying, Marla understands that there are things that sometimes only another music teacher will understand and that we need to lean on each other. She makes an honest effort at getting to know every music teacher within the Brandon School Division. Marla is very good at recognizing others strengths and helping them with her support, ideas and lesson plans. There is no doubt that Marla Fontaine is a most worthy recipient of this award and I congratulate her most heartily on her tremendous leadership and excellent teaching practices in our Manitoba Orff community. 13 RESOURCE REVIEW Happy New Year everyone! In each issue of the Modes, I will review some great new teacher resource materials you may want to use in your music room. This issue, I highlight a series I refer to often. Check it out; I know you ll find something useful in this wonderful resource. Enjoy! The Ice Breakers series by Valerie Lippoldt Mack are filled with games and activities to get your students interacting with one another and help them feel comfortable in the group. If you are familiar with the Responsive Classroom approach and the structure of a Morning Meeting, you ll know there is always a game or activity to get the group interacting. The activities in Ice Breakers are perfect for that setting, and they were specifically designed for music, choir, or drama class. The initial book was released in 2007, volume two came in 2009, and 2017 was the arrival of the third book. There are more than 60 games and activities in each of these inexpensive, easy to use books. The activities are grouped by type, with sections such as Meet and Greet, Races and Relays, Listen and Learn, Celebrate Diversity, Problem Solving, Focussing, Establishing Respect, and Stress Busters. I use the activities in this series at the start of the year, when new students join the class, as warmups in choir or music class, or just as quick energizers during a regular music class. Some activities are perfect for a large choir and others are better suited for an individual class. The best thing is that none of the activities require specialized props or lots of advanced preparation. Valerie is a music teacher and choir director. Both her parents were music teachers. She knows the importance of forming relationships with her students and building a learning community where all students have a voice and everyone belongs. We all know teaching is the business of people. At its foundation, teaching is about forming relationships. The activities in Ice Breakers have helped me do just that. I hope you ll pick up one or all of the Ice Breakers books and use some of the activities Valerie has outlined for us. I know you won t be disappointed! Submitted by Sean Fitzmaurice 13

14 TECH TIP This edition s Tech Tip touches base on Google Calendar and Smart Technologies! Recently, I have discovered how easy it is to use Google Calendar. It is a great tech resource for organizing important dates such as music concerts, conferences, meetings and music programs. It also lets you colour code items so it is easy to organize grade levels and units your students are working on. Give it a try and see how easy it is to organize and see your year at a glance! Have you used SMART EXCHANGE lately? If not, check it out! There are so many lessons and interactive activities for your music class. Just enter the grade(s) and topic you are interested in and search away. Here are five lessons/activities I found interesting 1. Ice Skater Vocal Warm-Up (students follow the ice skater s swirls, loops etc.) 2. Rhythm (wide variety of rhythms to clap, play, identify) 3. Orff Instrument Interactive Visual (demonstrate what bars to take off for students) 4. Love Somebody (Orff rhythm composition) 5. Canon #1 (melody from the Volumes in 6/8 time) Submitted by Angie Weisgerber 14
