President s Message Welcome back! I hope you had a restful summer and are looking forward to another school year full of music making with your students. This past June, the Manitoba Orff Chapter celebrated the 40 th Anniversary of Carl Orff Canada by presenting Play! at the Forks. I was truly moved by the children s involvement, the teacher dedication, the sense of community and the support demonstrated by all who were involved. I am inspired, more than ever, to advocate for music specialists and the Orff approach to music education here in Manitoba! The Orff approach fosters creative thinking and community building, and through it, music can be taught in a holistic, meaningful way. The process of experiencing music through speech and movement first, allows our students to internalize and naturally learn music, feeling it first. The process also allows for students to grow as creative thinkers, something that is crucial at a time when the careers that these young people will have in the future, could perhaps not even exist yet. Creativity is essential. I am proud to be a music specialist here in Manitoba and here in Winnipeg. Manitoba Music education is strong, supported and in a good place, but this won t continue to be the case if we were to stand idle. We have incredible music educators in our province, who work hard and need to continue advocating for music education through their school programs. Provincial organizations such as the Manitoba Orff Chapter, need to continue to proactively look forward and advocate for the importance of quality music education in our schools. from MOC President s greetings at Play! 2 An incredible amount of thanks goes out to Sean Fitzmaurice and the rest of the Play! committee, as well as our remarkable emcee, Chrissy Troy from Virgin 103. Because of the amazingly positive feedback from teachers, students, administrators, parents, media, government officials, and the general public, the MOC will be presenting Play as an annual event! More information regarding registration will soon be available so that you and your students can be involved in Play! 2015! In addition to Play, the MOC is very excited for another new initiative! In response to the need for continued outreach and professional development, we have created a workshop series entitled Building Bridges. Inspired by the success of the 2012 Norman Workshop in Thompson, the workshop series, facilitated by MOC president, vice-president and pastpresident, will create stronger connections and will provide even more support to music teachers from all corners of Manitoba. Our first workshop will be for our Westman friends on September 26 th in Brandon! Other exciting fall events include the annual MOC Make n Take on September 18, MOC/WSO Listening Workshop with Marcelline Moody on October 2, 3 and 5, the AMAM Leadership Conference on October 23, MMEA Tempo (including MOC supported clinicians) on October 24, MOC Fall Fiesta with Kris Olson and AGM on October 25. I look forward to seeing you out at these events! I wish you a smooth transition from summer to fall and all the best during the 2014/2015 school year! Steph Poulin President, Manitoba Orff Chapter

Music Advocacy and Cookies? A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand? What?! Got your attention? Good! So let's talk about advocacy for music education and how we can achieve a nice balance between advocating and educating. As we hear of so many schools across North America losing funding for their arts programs, it makes music educators in Manitoba thankful to have support in our province for music education. It also is a reminder that promoting music education in Manitoba schools is an area of advocacy that needs to happen continually. In fact, starting in your own school is a great way to spread the word, and what better way than with "Back to School" events. "What is ORFF?" How many parents actually know about the Orff approach in music education? Well, let's educate parents, administration and community and change "what is ORFF?" to "why not ORFF!" Back to School Night Video The AOSA (American Orff- Schulwerk Association) has put a 2 min. video on their website demonstrating children making music the Orff-Schulwerk way. Back to School Night Power Point The AOSA also created a Power Point presentation you can download then change to best suit your school and show to parents and students. Back to School Night Postcard Create a postcard handout for parents explaining what the Orff approach is all about. Keep it simple..."sing", "PLAY", "MOVE", "CREATE", "EXPLORE" Advocacy at the School Level If you haven't already created a website, now's the time to tap into your tech-side and use this as a fabulous music advocacy tool. Keep it current, educational and entertaining. Use your school newsletter as a way to inform parents of what is happening in your music room, share interesting music facts and encourage the many ways music can enhance their child's education. Submit photos and write-ups to your local newspaper highlighting musical groups and performances for the community. Talk, talk, talk, with your staff...find out what teachers are focusing on in their classrooms, units/themes they are using and try to incorporate a bridge between their classroom and your music room. Have students invite your admin to visit their music class and perform for them...or maybe even perform with them! Connect with your administration, parents/parent council and community, and spread the word of the importance of Music Education. Remember, a balanced classroom is both fun and educational...and we can also achieve a balance between advocating and educating... now that's worth a cookie! Angie Tester-Bouziane Advocacy Chair, Manitoba Orff Chapter 3

Play! Celebrating 40 Years of Orff in Canada 2014 marks the 40 th anniversary of Carl Orff Canada and Manitoba honoured this celebration with a day of amazing musical performances at PLAY! On Thursday, June 5, the Manitoba Orff Chapter hosted a day of music making at the Forks Market. The MOC works hard to promote Orff music education in our province and this day certainly helped us achieve that goal! Manitoba s very own Chrissy Troy of Virgin Radio hosted our event and did a spectacular job interviewing students and speaking of her own Orff experiences as a child. St. John s Music provided us with brand new instruments for the performances. There was a lot of June 5, 2014 The Forks, Winnipeg, MB media attention, a large and very enthusiastic audience, various guest speakers, and most importantly, hardworking and dedicated students who eagerly shared with us their love of music. Congratulations to all of our performers and their teachers, and a tremendous thank you to everyone who helped make PLAY! a success. In particular, I d like to extend my sincere appreciation to our PLAY! committee: Steph Poulin, Amanda Ciavarelli, Laura Anderson, Charisse Wurch, Shannon Moses, and Jewel Casselman. Thank you everyone! Sean Fitzmaurice Past-President, Manitoba Orff Chapter Click here for a video of highlights of guests and performers at Play!. MARK YOUR CALENDAR Bring your Orff group to MOC s second annual Play! Celebrating Over 40 Years of Orff Education. It will be held on June 4, 2015 at the Forks. Not only is this a great opportunity to for students to perform, your group will play a crucial role in advocating for the importance of Orff music education in our province. Registration forms will be available in January

The 34 th Anniversary of the Orff Certification Program Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music University of Manitoba The 34 th anniversary of the Orff Certification Program was held at the University of Manitoba from July 2 15, Students and instructors alike spent warm summer days on the beautiful University of Manitoba campus immersed in the Orff approach. Through hard-work, excitement and joy everyone stretched their abilities as musicians and teachers. The success of the program is due to our outstanding instructors who brought a depth of wisdom, experience and passion to our program. The 2014 faculty was: Jewel Casselman: Recorder Levels I and II Brenda Harvey: Basic Orff Level II Liz Kristjanson: Choral Techniques Levels I and II Erica Lindgren: Movement Levels I and II Karen Tole-Henderson: Basic Orff Level I and Aural Musicianship A large number of undergraduate students from the Integrated Music Education Program at the University of Manitoba participated as well as students and practicing teachers from Winnipeg and rural areas of Manitoba. We welcomed a returning Level II student from Whitehorse, Yukon. We were also very happy to welcome a Level I student who traveled from Loma Plata, Paraguay. The students in both Levels I and II have created friendships and collegial connections as they sang, danced and played together. Each individual demonstrated growth in their understanding of the Orff pedagogy. They have developed an understanding of how this holistic approach can positively impact student learning. Singing and recorders rang out in three buildings on campus and it was not unusual to see students dancing in the halls. Midway through the course, the Manitoba Orff Chapter hosted a delicious luncheon that provided the summer Orff students the opportunity to learn about the many ways the MOC enriches music education in our province. Several members of the executive were on hand to meet and greet students. MOC President, Stephanie Poulin, presided over a brief presentation. Morna-June Morrow, founding President of the Manitoba Orff Chapter was present and was introduced to the students. Congratulations to Level II student Caleb Reimer who was presented with the Helen Neufeld Memorial Scholarship by MOC Vice-President, Jewel Casselman. Continued on page 7 7

The 34 th Anniversary of the Orff Certification Program Continued from page 6 The days began with morning seminars that brought students from both levels together to warm up and enjoy favourite lessons by the course instructors and guests. Students began their days dancing in mixed meter, playing cup games, becoming simple machines, singing with joy and bringing a book to life with music and drama. The morning workshops set the tone for wonderful days of music making. Thanks to Sean Fitzmaurice and Julie Penny for joining us bright and early one morning to share their joy of teaching. Our ten days together were brought to a close with a sharing session. The Level I students chose ten hits from their classes which demonstrated the breadth and depth of learning that took place throughout the course. The Level II students shared their Orff learning through the story Mr. Tiger Goes Wild. With creativity and musicality, this performance truly captured the spirit of the Orff pedagogy. We were pleased to welcome Dr. David Mandzuk, Dean of the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Education as a guest at the sharing session. Carl Orff Canada President, Dr. Beryl Peters, brought greetings on behalf of Carl Orff Canada. She also presented Caleb Reimer with the Gunild Keetman Scholarship. Sean Fitzmaurice, MOC Past President, also brought greetings. The Sharing Session was a true celebration to wrap up our time together. In July 2015, we plan to offer Levels I, II and III of the Orff Certification Program. Enrolment is usually high, so please register early. For information please contact Joan Linklater at joan_linklater@umanitoba.ca. We look forward to once again sharing the joy of the Orff pedagogy with our students. 9 Enthusiastic Participants of the U of M Summer Orff Levels Enjoy MOC Luncheon! On Tuesday, July 8, 2014 the participants of the U of M Summer Orff courses enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the Manitoba Orff Chapter. This luncheon is an opportunity for the students to relax and to be introduced to the Board Members of MOC. This year Levels I and II were offered and were well attended by students from Winnipeg, surrounding areas, Yukon and as far away as Paraguay. We had greetings from Dr. Beryl Peters who is currently the President of Carl Orff Canada. She spoke highly of the level of Orff instruction in Manitoba and how fortunate we are in this province to have highly dedicated teachers who are involving our children in this amazing process of learning. She encouraged the participants to become MOC members and wished all of them success in the course as well as in their future teaching endeavours. Stephanie Poulin, president of MOC, brought greetings from the MOC Board of Directors. She expanded on the many different opportunities that are offered by MOC throughout the school year. She also spoke highly of the dedicated work of the instructors who take the time out of their summer to spend time sharing their knowledge and experience with the participants. This level of instruction and dedication of these instructors helps to provide our province with welltrained music educators. Jewel Casselman had the honour of presenting this year s Helen Neufeld Memorial Scholarship. The late Helen Neufeld was an outstanding and inspirational teacher. She was one of the pioneers of the Orff approach in Manitoba and throughout Canada. This year s recipient was Caleb Reimer a Level II student who is very enthusiastic, creative, and dedicated to the Orff approach in music education. He finds the Orff approach to be very intriguing and a useful method of teaching music to children where all children have the opportunity to participate and learn together. Congratulations Caleb. The students participated throughout this busy ten-day course with enthusiasm and excitement. They danced, sang, played xylophones and recorders, they created their own unique compositions and shared with others. It was another successful year with the U of M Orff levels courses. Congratulations to all of the participants during July 2014, thank you to the dedicated instructors and to all of the people who attended the luncheon. Jewel Casselman Vice-President, Manitoba Orff Chapter 9

Helen Neufeld Scholarship Recipient I was delighted to find out I had been accepted into Level 2 of the University of Manitoba s Orff Certification Program and having experienced Level 1 only one year prior, guessed that it would be an exhilarating yet grueling two weeks. I was correct on all accounts. I found myself in a group of eight individuals who were excellent musicians and dedicated students and we formed a close bond and camaraderie during the course which undoubtedly helped us all succeed. While we each put in the effort necessary to succeed, I was most impressed with how dedicated each of our instructors was. They taught their skills masterfully, ensured we knew what was expected of us, made themselves available to us after hours to coach us through difficult assignments, and provided valuable feedback that helped us grow day after day. I was also honoured to receive the Helen Neufeld Memorial Scholarship. The history of the scholarship and its winners is illustrious and I am humbled to have been chosen for this award. I trust that I will represent the namesake and past winners of this award well and will be able to bring that same skill, passion, and enthusiasm they had, to the children that cross my path in the years to come.
