3 Located just north of central Iowa metropolis Des Moines, Ankeny is a stone s throw away from Interstate 35 and Interstate 80, the major east-west highway of the northern United States. Omaha, Nebraska is two-and-a-half hours west, and Iowa City is two hours east. The Des Moines International Airport fulfills the commercial travel needs of Ankeny, while the Ankeny Regional Airport, the state s second-busiest airport, offers a closer base for corporate travel and charter flights.

4 As of 2010 over 45,000 people reside in Ankeny. That s a 68% increase in population from 1990 with 27,117. That names Ankeny the 11th largest city in Iowa! By 2020 the projected population is estimated to be over 59,000. Ankeny was founded in 1874 and officially became a city in 1961 with a population of 2,964. Today the Ankeny School District is considered the second-fastest growing district in Iowa.

5 Prairie Trail is a 1,031-acre planned community built on the tradition of Iowa s great neighborhoods. The city has ambitious intentions for this area and is currently in the process of developing Prairie Trail, a master-planned community that will blend elements of shopping, dining, entertainment, business, education and residential living. Prairie Trail will be primarily composed of residential districts featuring single-family homes, brownstones, townhouses, apartments above downtown businesses and senior housing units. However, there will be a multitude of nearby amenities available to the residents of Prairie Trail and other Ankeny citizens. DRA Properties, the developer, is very interested in creating an abundance of third places. The first and second most important places to a person are home and work, but third places are areas where residents can connect with the community. These community connections will pepper the entirety of Prairie Trail including a new school, headquarters for the Future Farmers of America, a new pol ice station, a library and a transit station. The entire community will also be accentuated with parks and nature trails. Perhaps the most important community area will be the Town Center which will contain numerous shops and restaurants designed to appeal to the nightlife of the everincreasing young adult population of Ankeny. The center will also hold the Town Square, featuring an outdoor amphitheater and pavilion. The development is also doing much to appeal to its neighbors, John Deere to the northwest and Des Moines Area Community College to the southeast. A 30-acre business park will be constructed south of the John Deere facility which will be perfect for businesses connected to the farm equipment giant. DMACC will use some of the land north of them to build a new classroom building and several housing complexes for its growing student population.

6 Ankeny is sprinkled with cultural venues close to home. Ankeny is proud of the existing Uptown Ankeny featuring many businesses as the hometown flavor of the community. Ankeny is home to the Prairie Ridge Center Youth Sports Complex, the first of its kind in Iowa. A staggering 15 baseball fields, 3 football fields, 11 soccer fields and 6 softball fields are enough to accommodate the team sporting needs of youth all over the area. Lush green spaces for exploration are available as well. Ankeny boasts 35 parks with over 2800 acres of fields, picnics, games, relaxation and 34 miles of paved trails for hiking or biking. Des Moines Area Community College, with an enrollment of nearly 60,000 in college credit or business training classes, has a 304-acre campus in Ankeny. Also in Ankeny is Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary, which offers a faith-based education that trains the Christian teachers, pastors and musicians of the future. Simpson College and Upper Iowa University offer centers in Ankeny. New in 2011, Iowa School of Beauty opened a location in Ankeny. The city is also in close proximity to Iowa State University.
