Our orchestra members come from throughout the Chicago area. The majority range in age from 40+ to 90+ and have played their instruments from 3 to 70 years.

2 The Senior Suburban Orchestra (SSO) is a 50-person orchestra based in Downers Grove, IL. We are an all-volunteer organization that plays for the love of music and, through our outreach program, shares that love of music with young and old. Our orchestra members come from throughout the Chicago area. The majority range in age from 40+ to 90+ and have played their instruments from 3 to 70 years. Our founding members launched the Senior Suburban Orchestra in Our concerts include a mix of classical, theatrical, pop and sing-a-long selections. We are proud to be Touching Hearts Through Music today. Weekly rehearsals are held on Tuesday afternoons from September through May, with performances usually on weekdays. The musicians play for the love of playing, pay no dues and sell no tickets. Auditions are not required. 5 Dan Pasquale D Andrea has conducted the SSO since its founding. Under his direction, the SSO received the Community Relations Orchestra of the Year Award from the Illinois Council of Orchestras in 2006 and Mr. D'Andrea currently serves as the director of the Sinfonietta Bel Canto, the Sinfonietta DuPage and the Combined Church Choir of Itasca. He has also served as the music director/ conductor for the Salt Creek Sinfonietta and the College of DuPage Chamber Orchestra and has been guest conductor of other groups, including the Wheaton Symphony Orchestra. An accomplished bassoonist, Mr. D Andrea has appeared as soloist with several orchestras including the New England Conservatory Symphony. He has received solo awards in the Composers/USA Young Performers, the Fernand Gillet Young Artist, and the Kingsville Young Performers competitions. Mr. D Andrea holds degrees from DePaul University, New England Conservatory, and Northern Illinois University. He is the Principal Bassoon with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. 7 It is heartwarming to hear these seniors who have the opportunity to continue sharing their talents with us. Ron Baumgardner is the SSO s resident arranger. His much-loved sing-along arrangements combine selections from specific music themes into crowd-pleasing medleys of familiar tunes.

After studying piano as a child, Ron played brass instruments in high school.

While attending Illinois State University, Ron learned string instruments and played viola in the orchestra.

Ron has been playing strings in local suburban orchestras since the early 1960s, and has been a member of the SSO since 2003.

9 Ron Baumgardner is the SSO s resident arranger. His much-loved sing-along arrangements combine selections from specific music themes into crowd-pleasing medleys of familiar tunes. Ron s love of music runs deep. His father was a fiddler who made violins in downstate Illinois. In fact, Ron plays on one of his father s instruments in these concerts. After studying piano as a child, Ron played brass instruments in high school. He composed a march for his high school band to perform during his senior year, and that inspired a lifelong interest in arranging. While attending Illinois State University, Ron learned string instruments and played viola in the orchestra. He went on to complete a long, successful career as a school music teacher and orchestra director in Villa Park. Ron has been playing strings in local suburban orchestras since the early 1960s, and has been a member of the SSO since He is also an avid chamber music player, and regularly hosts ensembles at his home. On the side, Ron enjoys arranging music for a variety of ensembles and is an avid collector of both classical music recordings and postage stamps.
