9 Program Notes Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Fritz Loewe together wrote some of Broadway s most enduring and endearing musicals beginning in Their first hit collaboration was in 1947 with Brigadoon, (Brigadoon, Heather on the Hill, Almost Like Being in Love, Waiting for My Dearie) a fantasy set in Scotland, where a mysterious village appears once every hundred years. A visiting hunter falls in love with a beautiful woman from Brigadoon and steps into its magic circle forever. With its lively score and choreography by Agnes de Mille, Brigadoon was made into a successful motion picture and is frequently revived on Broadway and around the world. It is generally acknowledged that the duo hit their creative peak in 1956 with My Fair Lady, based on Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (currently on Broadway in a sumptuous revival). Their sparking score, including soaring ballads, English musical hall production numbers, and unforgettable character songs, led to its winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It also made its leading lady, a young Julie Andrews, an international star. A broad array of numbers from the show are being sung tonight (Why Can t the English, Wouldn t It Be Loverly, With A Little Bit of Luck, Just You Wait, The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night, Ascot Gavotte, On the Street Where You Live, Without You). In 1960, Lerner & Loewe collaborated on Camelot, a musicalized version of the King Arthur legend based on T.H. White s The Once and Future King. With a cast led by Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet, the production, which won six Tony Awards, featured some of Broadway s greatest hits and remains a staple in high school theatre programs and touring productions. The idealism of the story inspired President John F. Kennedy, and his presidential administration and elusive family was forever dubbed Camelot. Tonight, we present two songs from this show - The Simple Joys of Maidenhood and Camelot. Lerner and & Loewe received many awards including the Kennedy Center Honors in The rank among the great musical theatre songwriting duos of the 20 th century along with Rodgers and Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart, and George and Ira Gershwin.

11 Concordia Conservatory presents The 19 th Annual Holiday Community Musical A CHRISTMAS CAROL by John Higgins Stage Director: Greg Suss Music Director: Jon Klibonoff Choreographer: Ana Dimas Audition dates: September 28 (3 6 PM) September 29 (9 AM 12 PM) Audition Location: Stein Hall Performance dates: November 30, December 1 & 2 Auditions are open to individuals from ages Since 1999, Concordia Conservatory has produced an annual holiday musical as a tuition-free community outreach program featuring performers from ages Audition requirements include singing a song of choice which best demonstrates one s vocal ability, and those auditioning are required to bring sheet music to the audition. An accompanist will be provided. All auditioners will be asked to dance and should be prepared to read a selection from the provided script if asked. Interviews will be held for all backstage production staff (ages 8-22) - stage managers, props, lighting, set construction, makeup and hair will be held during the audition times listed above. There are two reasons we hear over and over again: I finally have time and have always wanted to learn an instrument or sing. AND I didn t realize how much I would miss it. Conservatory adult students are a very diverse group, Ranging in age from 18 to 90+, they include musicians and singers at all skill levels, from absolute beginners to adults who studied an instrument seriously as children or teens, took a break, and then returned to music.
