Dear Friends, I m pleased to share the news that WXXI and the Golisano Foundation have launched MOVE TO INCLUDE, a major initiative designed to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. What does inclusion mean? To more than 20 Norm Silverstein million families in the U.S. who have a least one family member with a disability, inclusion is about appreciating people s differences and honoring their value and contributions. Through special programming, news stories and community events, we will work to motivate individuals to take action and to include more people with disabilities in the workplace, in schools, neighborhoods and in all aspects of society. MOVE TO INCLUDE grew out of a 10-year partnership with Al Sigl Community of Agencies and WXXI. The project, DIALOGUE ON DISABILITY, which is a week-long initiative focusing on abilities instead of disabilities, will continue to take place each year in January as part of the MOVE TO INCLUDE initiative. Be sure to look for special MOVE TO INCLUDE programming each month. In May we present Rachel is on WXXI-WORLD Tuesday, May 6 at 8 p.m. and Hawking on WXXI-TV Friday, May 16 at 10:30 p.m. Descriptions for both can be found in this magazine. To learn more about this initiative visit: WXXI.orginclude. I hope you had a chance to catch the first episode of our six-part Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival series last month. The series continues through May. Seeing Grammy award-winner Gregory Porter, Gretchen Parlato, and Ravi Coltrane Quartet is a warm up for going downtown and enjoying this year s festival! We ll be sharing this series with Jazz lovers from coast to coast when it airs nationally on PBS stations over the next several months. Since 2006 WXXI has been capturing the sights and sounds of the festival and, over the years, millions of viewers have watched the series on hundreds of PBS stations. It has aired in 49 states, including major markets such as New York, Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Chicago. WXXI is dedicated to spotlighting Rochester s rich culture, history, and talent with audiences here at home and across the country. That s why in addition to our Jazz Festival series; we re gearing up for national distribution of our Paley on Park Avenue: New York City documentary and preparing for production of a new season of our national healthcare series Second Opinion. It s also why we re proud to support local independent film makers like Chris Christopher and Dave Marshall by serving as the presenting station for their documentary, Criminal Injustice: Death and Politics at Attica. The documentary, which reveals the story of what really happened during the 1971 Attica prison riots, brought home a New York Emmy last month. Congratulations to both Chris and Dave. Special thanks to you, too. As a member, you support the many ways that WXXI serves our community! Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

4 NEWS&EVENTS Q&A with a WXXI underwriter Which of the following can you find at Genesee Country Village & Museum? A 19th-century village of talented trades and craftspeople with friendly knowledgeable interpreters. A magnificent art gallery that sees art in the rare and the everyday. A nature center that offers a gateway into the natural world. A Civil War-era balloon that soars overhead. 45 refurbished historic buildings plus barns, carriage, smoke and ice houses, and garden structures. Places to observe, touch, and experience while gaining understanding of how we got from the past to today. All of the above. If you selected All of the above, you are correct! Peter Arnold, President of GCV&M, tells us more. Q. Why do you feel GCV&M is a valuable asset to the Greater Rochester community? It is a cultural gem and the largest living history museum in New York. It keeps us connected to our culture and the history of our community. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about GCV&M? We are so much more than historic buildings and so rich in activities. It can take more than a day to experience it all. Several exhibits are unique to the entire country. We are only 20 minutes from Rochester. Q. Are there other similar tourist venues that you admire for their practices andor reputation? Yes, Skansen, the world s first open air museum in Stockholm, Sweden; Colonial Williamsburg, a living-history museum in Williamsburg, Virginia; and Conner Prairie Interactive History Park, a Smithsonian affiliate in Indianapolis, Indiana. Q. What distinguishes GCV&M from other tourist destinations in the Greater Rochester area? Everything. We offer an emotional hands-on experience which is the essence of living history. It is an experience unlike others: hike through fields and forests; visit works of painting masters; see one of the finest historic clothing collections; ride a Civil War-era gas balloon; visit with a master potter, blacksmith, spinner, weaver, tinsmith, a 19th-century farmer working his oxen, and much more! MAY 4 AT 9PM Motion: Affirmative action on campus does more harm than good. Affirmative action, when used as a factor in college admissions, is meant to foster diversity and provide equal opportunities in education for underrepresented minorities. But is it achieving its stated goals and helping the population it was d to support? Its critics point to students struggling to keep up in schools mismatched to their abilities and to the fact that the policy can be manipulated to benefit affluent and middle class students who already possess many educational advantages. Is it time to overhaul or abolish affirmative action? Moderator: John Donvan Speaking for the motion Gail Heriot, Professor of Law, USD School of Law & Member, U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; Richard Sander, Professor of Law, UCLA School of Law Speaking against the motion Randall Kennedy, Professor of Law, Harvard Law School; Theodore Shaw, Professor of Law, Columbia Law School 1370 Forums & AM 1370 Specials Intelligence Squared US SUNday, May 11 at 9 pm Is the future of the university online? Motion: More clicks, less bricks: The future of the university is online. Is the college of the future online? With the popularity of MOOCs (massive open online courses) and the availability of online degree programs at a fraction of their oncampus price, we are experiencing an exciting experiment in higher education. Does the traditional classroom stand a chance? sunday, May 18 at 9 pm Millennials don t stand a chance. Millennials growing up with revolutionary technology and entering adulthood in a time of recession have recently been much maligned. Are their critics right? Is this generation uniquely coddled, narcissistic, and lazy? Or have we let conventional wisdom blind us to their openness to change and innovation, and optimism in the face of uncertainty, which, in any generation, are qualities to be admired? sunday, May 25 at 9 pm Is death final? If consciousness is just the workings of neurons and synapses, how do we explain the phenomenon of near-death experience? By some accounts, about 3% of the U.S. population has had one: an out-of-body experience often characterized by remarkable visions and feelings of peace and joy, all while the physical body is close to death. To skeptics, there are more plausible, natural explanations, like oxygen deprivation. Is the prospect of an existence after death real and provable by science, or a construct of wishful thinking about our own mortality?

18 wxxi&little NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: KING LEAR Okay, so this rich dad is ready to divvy up his estate between three daughters, but he wants them to tell him how great he is. This leads to a story of outrage, true love and unwelcome houseguests. No, The Little hasn t started screening the latest reality TV show. This is National Theatre Live s production of King Lear. On May 18 and 20, The Little is bringing a world-class London theatre performance to Rochester. Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (James Bond: Skyfall, American Beauty) returns to the National Theatre to direct Simon Russell Beale (Timon of Athens, Collaborators) in the title role of Shakespeare s timeless tragedy. In short, an aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. His favorite, Cordelia, says nothing. Lear s world descends into chaos. For those not familiar with NT Live, it s really something to see. Actual theatre performances with the best actors and directors in London are recorded as live with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, ensuring that Little audiences get the best seat in the house for each production. Where these cameras are placed is different for each show, to make sure audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time. Tickets for the show are $15 for Little members, students and seniors and $20 for general public. LITTLE 1 UNDERGOES A DIGITAL FACELIFT If you see a Closed sign on Theater 1 in May, don t panic it will only be down for a couple of weeks. Starting May 12 and ending (tentatively) May 30, we re shuttering our original and largest theater to make the big conversion from 35mm film to digital projection. This will mean sharper images, crisper sound, and happier patrons (that s you). Now, if you re a film lover, don t despair. We re retaining the ability to show 35mm film reel to reel, just like in the good ol days. FOREVER YOUNG: A FRESH LOOK AT AGING A few topics are important enough for Robin Lehman, Rochester s Oscarwinning documentarian, to come to our theatre as a special guest. Our culture s overwhelming fear of aging is one of those topics. Today, it s assumed that as soon as a person s youthful glow starts to fade, their best days are behind them. Well, The Little s One Take: Stories Through the Lens documentary series is pleased to debunk that myth with Forever Young, a documentary in which 26 active, interested and interesting senior citizens talk frankly about health, happiness, retirement, sex, death and their overall enjoyment of life. In addition to Forever Young, we will be screening Henry, an Oscarnominated live action short film about Alzheimer s disease. Join us on May 13 at 7:00 p.m. for an evening examining two sides of the aging process and two styles of film storytelling!
