1 The Music Box Qatar Music Academy s monthly newsletter AMD Annual Concert The Concert was under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari-State Minister. Another successful annual concert was held by the AMD this year at Musheireb Museums in Sheikh Mhammed Bin Jasim s House. The Arab Music Department s students Takht and Jawqa conducted by Taoufik Mirkhan, Qanun teacher in the department, excel by performing for the first part on the concert. They performed pieces such as Iftah ya simsim, nidilik yal Doha It was a big challenge and a wonderful experience for all to prepare the pieces during the last few weeks. 2 The Music Box March 2018 ABRSM News Congratulations to all of the students in the Academic Programme from Grade 1-6 who sat the ABRSM theory exam on Saturday, March 3rd at Doha College. The results should arrive from London in April, fingers crossed! The ABRSM Practical exams will be held at QMA starting on Tuesday, May 1st to Saturday, May 5th. The ABRSM Diploma exam will be on Thursday, May 24th. Please make sure that you are attending the aural lessons to prepare for that very important part of the exam. Congratulations to Hema Bojja Charles for receiving her certificate for the ABRSM Diploma on the piano. Thank you to Zhivka Pesheva Renault for all her hard work to prepare Hema for the exam. Qatar Schools Wind Band Day Qatar Schools Wind Band Day Wednesday March 7th pm Students from the QMA Junior Symphonic Wind Ensemble joined together with students from ASD, Doha College, Dukhan English School and Al Khor International School, GEMS AAQ and QA Doha to learn new repertoire and to improve their ensemble skills. It was a wonderful morning with students having sectional rehearsals, culminating in a concert for their parents. It was also a great opportunity for the students to listen to the Middle School Band from ASD perform for some inspiration. Thank you to Rachel Seay for teaching the students the repertoire and for helping with the organisation of the event. 3 The Music Box March 2018 AMD Visits to Independent Schools As requested by Ministry of Education in Qatar, The Arab Music Department continued to approach independent schools for workshop series in order to encourage Qatari students to enroll at QMA. The AMD visited Ibn Khaldoun, Al-Yarmouk independent school and received students from Ali-Bin Abi Taleb School. During these workshops, Yassine Ayari, Head of department and Nay teacher, Taoufik Mirkhan, Qanun, Abdulla Mhoul, Oud and voice and Hany Zain, Arab percussion presented QMA, talked about the AMD s musical program and demonstrated the Arab music and musical instruments. It was a great opportunity for the students to ask question about the instruments and experiment singing patriotic songs with live musicians. The song was Hina Bi Khir. QA and QMA Symphonic Winds and Percussion Concert Wednesday March 21st pm Symphonic Winds and Percussion Ensemble performed at Qatar Academy-Doha on Wednesday, March 21st. The concert began with student soloists and ensembles from Qatar Academy-Doha, followed by a performance of three pieces by the Symphonic Winds and Percussion Ensemble. To finish the programme, all students joined together to perform the piece You Raise Me Up, made popular by Josh Groban. This successful event was the first collaboration between students from QMA and the music department of the Qatar Academy-Doha Senior School. 4 The Music Box March 2018 ABRSM Recital Series The ABRSM Recital series commenced on Thursday, March 22nd in Ziriab Hall. Students who are preparing for an ABRSM practical exam will all have the opportunity to play at least two of their exam pieces at a recital over the next two months. The workshop was an opportunity to work on a group setting. One of the workshop was done at Katara in front of QMA and was open for public. The workshop was a great opportunity to give more attention to important details in-group classes and help students get used to working as a group in a different setting. 4

5 The Music Box March 2018 QMA and QPO Combined Orchestral Concert Tuesday March 13th 7.30pm On Tuesday, March 13th QPO musicians and QMA students performed together at QNCC in Auditorium Three. We were privileged to hear solos by Carolyne Lee Tse Chen, Naomi Chen, Aoife Galvin, Per-Niklas Barth, Tim Salman, Abdulla Najjar, Fatima, Aya Dawas, Luna Echtay and Jack Dillon as well as listening to the students in the QMA Youth Orchestra. It was indeed a very special night. If you were not able to attend the concert please click here to watch the performances. It was inspiring to watch the students work with Giovanni Pasini, the conductor and see what it feels like to work in a professional orchestra. 6 The Music Box March 2018 Workshop On the 1st and 21st of March, 50 students aged 3 to 6 years old from Petit Pas school and Bonaparte French school visited QMA to attend a workshop about Arab music and musical instruments. Francophonie Week Opening Ceremony Yassine Ayari, Nay and Hany Zein, Percussion have appeared with Jasser Haj Youssef s quartet on March 20th at Qatar National Theater. Western Music Department Ensemble Concert Saturday, March 24th 6.00pm-7.00pm, Hamad Bin Khalifa Student Centre. Congratulations to the students in the 3 choirs, 3 percussion ensembles, Little Amadeus String Ensemble and the Junior Symphonic Winds and Percussion for performing at the Ensemble Concert. I would like to thank Colleen Wang, Anna Zaffagni, Julia Salvaggio, Naomi Chen and Hema Bojja Charles for joining together to form a string quartet especially for the concert to accompany the Senior Choir. Brass Day QMA will host the third annual Qatar Brass Day on Friday April 27th from 1-5pm. The event will bring together student brass musicians from across Qatar to celebrate all things brass. On the day, students will have the opportunity to work with specialist brass teachers from across Qatar in like-instrument groups, meet other students also learning brass instruments, and perform for each other in an informal recital. Workshop with International Guest The AMD string ensemble have had the opportunity on March 19th to work with Jasser Haj Youssef, a Franco-Tunisian Jazz violin player. 7
