1 Paul Goodwin-Groen is a versatile artist capable of straddling between early music, standard classical, and modern repertoire. This year Mr. Goodwin-Groen performs Fafner in Siegfried at Henry Wood Hall in London, and covers for Titurel and 2 nd Knight in Parsifal at Saffron Hall in Cambridge. During the Easter season he sang the bass solo in Händel s Messiah and Bach s St. John Passion with Dei Gratia Baroque Ensemble. In 2016/17, he sang Händel s Messiah in Sarasota and performed in a holiday concert with North Port Orchestra. He also performed as Boito s Mephisto in No Exit at Soho Repertory Theater and was featured in the film Something Blue, or l Opera di Bachelor by Scott Joiner. In 2015/16, he performed Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail at Manhattan School of Music, Arkel in Pelleas et Melisande with Floating Opera New York, and with Opera Company of Brooklyn Wotan in Die Walküre, Alvise Badoer in La Gioconda, and The Bonze in Madama Butterfly. In recent seasons, he has appeared with Opera Piccola of San Antonio as General de la Barca in Rodriguez s La Curandera and Colas in Mozart s Bastien und Bastienne, and with Operamission he performed as Claudio in Agrippina. As an international artist in Sydney, Australia he sang Sarastro in The Magic Flute with Pacific Opera, Jupiter in Rameau s Castor et Pollux with Pinchgut Opera, Talpa in Il Tabarro with Sydney Independent Opera, the title role in Saul with Sydney University Choirs, The Officer in Glass In the Penal Colony with Sydney Chamber Opera, The Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas with the Macau International Music Festival, Ford in Sir John in Love with the Tasmanian Discovery Orchestra, and Conan/Grimbald in Purcell s King Arthur with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Paul Goodwin-Groen has performed on the renowned stage of the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, portraying Guccio in Gianni Schicchi while covering Simone, Ginardo in Matilde di Shabran, Silvano in Calisto, and Stefano in Thomas Ades The Tempest. Also in the U.K., he performed Don Fernando in Fidelio with London Lyric Opera, Sparafucile in Rigoletto with New Devon Opera, Bottom in A Midsummer Night s Dream at the Aldeburgh Festival, and Sadmus/Somnus in Semele at St. John s Smith Square in London. With Garsington Opera he covered Alidoro in La Cenerentola and Duglas in La Donna del Lago. As a guest artist at Theatre Hof in Germany, he appeared as Fafner in Das Rheingold. In New York City, Mr. Goodwin-Groen performed with Bronx Opera as Colline in La Bohème, Caspar in Der Freischütz, and in the title role of Don Pasquale. He has also appeared as Sarastro in The Magic Flute with Opera Company of Brooklyn, Mr. Olsen in Street Scene with DiCapo Opera Theater, Zuniga in Carmen with New Rochelle Opera, Claudio (cover) in Agrippina with New York City Opera, and was a member of the Ensemble in Baz Luhrmann s La Bohéme on Broadway.

5 Reviews The sympathetic Creon brings us to a high point of this production: Paul Goodwin Groen, the magnificent bass, singing Ella Giammai, the aria sung by an equally distressed King Philppe II in Verdi s Don Carlo. Omigosh. What an experience, to hear this full, operatic bass not in a vast opera house but in the intimate setting of, yes, off-broadway Groen s interpretation of the aria, his acting, his strength and his pathos again, seen close are thrilling. If there were no other reason to see this play and there are many others Groen s Ella Giammai would be of itself worth all. In fact, watching Groen play the conflicted ruler of Thebes, I was reminded that the original story is more about Creon than it is about Antigone. And, whether due to the playwright's intention, my own bias, or just Groen's superb acting (I suspect the latter), I found my sympathies residing with King Creon more than with Antigone. Though I can't help admiring Antigone's resolve and stubborn defiance, I'm still not sure why she did it. But I understand Creon's reasoning perfectly; and I don't know that he could have acted any differently than he did.
