3 4.3 MSkills Revision (Low) Request to add more time to Musicianship Skills due to the amount of content (extra 50 minute session/week). COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS: - Creating sections that reflect the skillset of the students (mirroring the first-year theory placement system) - Questions and opposition regarding the effects on teaching credit hours and Instructor course load) - Compensation & recognition for students AND faculty - Aural Skills Placement Exam at year beginning STUDENT REP COMMENTS: - In favour of a tiered system - Students either being pushed beyond their comfort level, or being held back Suggestion for strategic plan that highlights the reasons for change and ways the Department of Music can still generate revenue 4.4 Recital Hall Acoustic Adjustment (Low) COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS: - Large removable carpet - Workshop day with an acoustician; teach faculty and staff to manipulate sound within the room - Drop-down or adjustable curtains - Lack of sustain in lower frequencies need to find ways to create volume here somehow 4.5 U o f L Wind Orchestra Concerto Competition (Low-encl.) COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS: - Need to know requirements for repertoire - Potential to align it with LSO concerto competition - Suggestion for tuition waiver versus cash prize General approval from committee; some discussion as to whether there should be a cash prize or incentive for the winning student. 4 5.4 DAA News (Morris) - On March 7th and 8th (1:30pm - 5pm), Scott Davidson from Chinook High School will be bringing some groups in for recording workshops. Chris Morris will be running these workshops with some assistance from MMus student, Jake Hills. We will provide them with the multi track recordings when their finished so they can use them for a mixing assignment in class. This is a great recruitment opportunity. - Shae Brossard is doing a stellar job with the Geomatic Attic & Lucky Star Guitars production. A few artists are already finished tracking and the rest are scheduled and ready to go. It should be a great disc when it s done. - We will be helping CKXU 88.3FM with their annual Fun Drive fundraiser. Beginning March 18th we will be broadcasting various local acts live from Studio One every morning for 6 consecutive days. There are already a few DAA student volunteers to engineer the sessions and we are just looking for a few more (I will be sending an out). These are very early sessions (load in at 6:00am, broadcast at 8am) so there won t be any conflicts with our day to day bookings. - We ve tested the audio streaming capabilities from Studio One and it seems to work very well. CKXU has again expressed interest in broadcasting the Tuesday M@N concerts live on air. - Studio One is very busy this semester. Since January 1st there have been 219 bookings totaling 960 hours of use. 6. Other Items 6.1 May Retreat Dates (week of May 9-13 or 16-20?) Dates to be decided via 7. Faculty/School: Fine Arts Proposed Date of Implementation: May 1, 2017 Type of Change: Program Requirements Department/Division: Music If Other, please explain: Does This Require External Approval? No Summary of Change: Undergraduate Calendar p. xx Graduate Calendar p. xx Changes to the B.A. major in Music. Rationale: The Faculty of Fine Arts has reviewed its BA Music major offerings and made changes removing the Theory/History and General (i.e., Studio-based) streams. The purpose is to create a more broad, flexible, and general major (as was always the intention of the B.A.) wherein students have the opportunity to focus on the areas of their own particular interests whether these are history, theory, classical, contemporary music and/or a combination of several or all areas. While the Department of Music prioritizes studio studies as part of a Music major in its B.Mus. programs, B.A. students who wish to study performance may still do so using Studio courses, after a successful audition, and Ensembles as electives. Students who exit the pre-b.a./b.ed. program will be able to complete the restructured Music major in the B.A. with a minimum of 20 courses in Music, assuming they have completed all Music requirements in the B.A./B.Ed. before they change programs. As this fits within the Changes: (Include current Calendar entry with track changes) ff. Music Department: Music (Faculty of Fine Arts) The major in Music is a broad, general program of study. Students complete a core of required courses and choose electives based on their areas of interest. one of two streams: Theory/History or General. 21 Chair's Report Just a reminder that we have Studio auditions this weekend (March 4/5). In addition, the two shortlisted MMus applicants will audition/interview on Friday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. (RH) and 6:45 p.m. (W850). Update on the Piano position: The application deadline was last Friday, February 26 and the Music Search Committee has begun review of applications. About 50 applications have been received. We have made tentative plans to bring in three shortlisted candidates (as yet not selected) for their interview processes during the week of April Once the candidates and dates have been confirmed, I will inform everyone and encourage you all to take in as much of the process as possible (and offer your feedback). Associate VP Academic, Lesley Brown, is spearheading a committee looking into developing Continuing Education programs. What kinds of courses could the Department of Music offer? Thank you to everyone (faculty and students alike) who participated in EFAD this year! There has been great feedback and much enthusiasm from students and teachers.
