His amily suered with the rest o the Dutch nation the horrors o the Second World War. Ater the war he went to elementary school, high school and teachers? seminary. He worked seven years as a teacher in Amsterdam, then emigrated to Israel. Ater a short sojourn in kibbutz Sha?alvim he joined begin 1967 a Rabbinical College in Netivot. In 1969 he married Lilette Sroussi, a girl rom Paris, France, who emigrated to Israel in 196. During the years the couple has been blessed with ive children. In 1974 they moved to Jerusalem, where he started to work as a graphic artist. In 19 they emigrated to the USA, where they still live, now as American citizens. In the USA he worked as a computer operator. In 2004 he retired. Though his career as a composer hasn?t been an easy one, he managed over the years to rise to the level o a proessional composer. Beside one year (at age ) o piano lessons he never got any training. He has taught himsel and learned by playing the piano, studying the compositions o the masters, going to concerts, listening to classical radio and recordings and rom exploring books on composition, harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, etc... 10 Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Deventer, April or May, 1562 Amsterdam, 16 October 1621, was a Dutch composer, organist, and pedagogue whose work straddled the end o the Renaissance and beginning o the Baroque eras. He was among the irst major keyboard composers o Europe, and his work as a teacher helped establish the north German organ tradition. He was the most important composer o the musically rich "golden era" o the Netherlands.
11 Sweelinck's inluence spread as ar as Sweden and England, carried to the ormer by Andreas Düben and to the latter by English composers such as Peter Philips, who probably met Sweelinck in 159. Sweelinck, and Dutch composers in general, had evident links to the English school o composition. Sweelinck's music appears in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, which urther only contains the work o English composers. He wrote variations on John Dowland's amous Lachrimae Pavane. John Bull, who was probably a personal riend, wrote a set o variations on a theme by Sweelinck ater the death o the Dutch composer. Sweelinck represents the highest development o the Dutch keyboard school, and indeed represented a pinnacle in keyboard contrapuntal complexity and reinement beore J.S. Bach. However, he was a skilled composer or voices as well, and composed more than 250 vocal works (chansons, madrigals, motets and Psalms). Some o Sweelinck's innovations were o proound musical importance, including the ugue he was the irst to write an organ ugue which began simply, with one subject, successively adding texture and complexity until a inal climax and resolution, an idea which was perected at the end o the Baroque era by Bach. It is also generally thought that many o Sweelinck's keyboard works were intended as studies or his pupils. He was also the irst to use the pedal as a real ugal part. Stylistically Sweelinck's music also brings together the richness, complexity and spatial sense o Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, with whom he was amiliar rom his time in Venice, and the ornamentation and intimate orms o the English keyboard composers. In some o his works Sweelinck appears as a composer o the baroque style, with the exception o his chansons which mostly resemble the French Renaissance tradition. In ormal development, especially in the use o countersubject, stretto, and organ point (pedal point), his music looks ahead to Bach (who was quite possibly amiliar with Sweelinck s music).
