2 The Arranger Jeremy Woolstenhulme received his B.M.E. rom Brigham Young University in 000 and an M.A. in Perormance rom the University o Nevada (Las Vegas) in 005. Currently, Mr. Woolstenhulme serves as the orchestra director at Hyde Park Middle School in the Clark County School District. He has traveled with his orchestra to London, Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York. Mr. Woolstenhulme s orchestra was selected to play at the 008 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. In 00, Hyde Park won second place at the ASTA National Orchestra Festival in Santa Clara, Caliornia; they were also invited to perorm at the 0 estival in Kansas City. In addition, Mr. Woolstenhulme is a contract musician with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, cellist or the Seasons String Quartet, and a reelance musician perorming at many venues located on the amed Las Vegas Strip. He lives with his beautiul wie Taryn and their three children, Cadence Belle, Coda Blake, and Canon Thomas. The Arrangement Badinerie is a wonderul song or teaching low 4th inger to the violins and the violas. I would start with some warm-up patterns that include the whole orchestra playing unison F, G, A, and Bb, with the violins starting on the E string. This note set could help the violins understand the 3-4 pattern, or low 4th inger on the E string. Ater practicing this ingering, I would have everyone play Bb, C, D, E b, with the violins, violas, and basses on the A string (cellos could start on the G string to avoid shiting). The objective o this exercise would be or violins and violas to practice the low 4th inger, and or cellos and basses to practice a smooth, seamless scale without shiting. A Baroque suite like this requires a detached bow or swit, clean articulation. Make sure the quarter notes are played with the correct bow stroke. Also, be careul with the slurring pattern at m. 3, 5, and 53! Slow practice may be required to work out this tricky pattern. A sharp dynamic shit occurs at m. 3. Make sure the ensemble begins this phrase quietly so that the crescendo three bars later can achieve its maximum dramatic iact. Good luck and have un with Badinerie! 3 3 Learning Bank: The Lie and Music o Johann Sebastian Bach J. S. Bach ( ), the greatest cooser o the Baroque Period, was born into a amous amily o musicians. Almost all o his male relatives were musicians, and 53 Bachs were named Johann; or this reason, he went by his middle name, Sebastian. The young Bach was greatly inluenced by his ather, who taught him violin, harpsichord, organ, and coosition. He loved music so much that it was not unusual or him to walk over 50 miles to hear a concert. During his lietime, Bach was best known as an organist, not a cooser. He was so dedicated to the instrument, in act, that sometimes he played with a stick in his mouth to help him reach certain notes. His irst job as a church organist came when he was 8, but his eloyers weren t happy with him. Bach played hymn accoaniments that were so new and interesting that people stopped singing in order to listen! At heart, Bach was a amily man who was devoted to God. At the age o 38 he became director o music at St. Thomas s Church in Leipzig, a post he would hold or the rest o his lie. This position allowed him to balance his coositional activity with his duties as a ather and husband. With 0 children, this was no small eat! Bach coosed over 000 works in his career. He was a master o melody and counterpoint never beore had someone combined these talents so seamlessly. His music was proound and deep, not always easily understood. Instead o creating new orms and new ways to express himsel through music, Bach took existing orms and wrote beautiul music or them. Because he wasn t innovative in obvious ways, many people in his day considered him oldashioned. Bach always wrote music to it an immediate purpose. For instance, one o his pupils, Johann Goldberg, worked or a rich count who had a bad case o insomnia and needed music in order to sleep. Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations or him, and the grateul count sent Bach the biggest payment he had ever received. Likewise, Bach s Two- Part Inventions or piano were written or his children as an aid to practice. For his church job, Bach was responsible or writing a whole cantata (a long vocal work, oten with soloists, choir, and orchestra) every week so there would be new music or each Sunday service. Bach lived a ull, happy lie. He loved good ood, and even wrote a cantata about one o his avorite beverages, coee. He spent his entire lie in one small part o Germany, never expecting or receiving ame. It wasn t until 00 years ater his death that his genius was ully recognized.
