3 Visitor s Guide Welcome The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale extends a warm welcome to Saint Agnes parishioners and visitors. Our season of choral Masses with orchestra offers you reverent and unforgettable liturgical worship, including: Choral masterworks from the Catholic Church s treasury of sacred music by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and other great composers The Mass in Latin, the Church s official language Gregorian chant by the Schola Cantorum Glorious Baroque-style architecture Everything you will hear and see fulfills the directives of the Second Vatican Council. We lift our voices to praise God. Many Catholics and music lovers have heard choral Masses only in concert halls. We offer a very different experience: choral Masses sung as an integral part of the liturgy, as the composers intended. We sing at 10 a.m. on Sundays, from early October through Pentecost Sunday, except during Advent and Lent. On All Souls Day (November 2), the Chorale performs the Mozart Requiem, K 626, and on Christmas Eve, the Chorale sings the Midnight Mass, rich in tradition, majesty and beauty. Dr. Robert L. Peterson directs the approximately 60 volunteer singers and our professional orchestra and vocal soloists: Patricia Kent, soprano; Jocelyn Kalajian, contralto; John decausmeaker, tenor; and Jon Nordstrom, bass. Mary Elizabeth LeVoir, D.M.A., is the organist. We re looking for singers! Experience the joy and awe of singing the great Masses of the classical composers with a professional orchestra. The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale is looking for new members in all sections. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the choir loft. Prospective singers should have singing experience and basic music reading skills. For further information, contact Dr. Robert Peterson, Music Director, at RLPeterson2@msn.com. Please help us keep on singing. To present music of great beauty and complexity, we need dedicated volunteer singers, professional instrumentalists and vocal soloists. It is an expensive proposition, and we depend totally on the generosity of our contributors, the Friends of the Chorale (see page 4). 3

4 Please become a Friend of the Chorale by donating: Online at By mail; send your check, payable to the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale, to P.O. Box 4234, Saint Paul, MN For more information about sponsoring the music at a Chorale Mass in memory or honor of an individual, or to commemorate a birthday, anniversary or death, or for including the Chorale in your estate planning, please send an to inquiry@catholicchorale.org. The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, separate from Saint Agnes parish and the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by federal and state law. A little history Founded by the late Monsignor Richard J. Schuler in 1955, the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale has been singing at Saint Agnes since This is our forty-fifth consecutive season in the parish. We feel blessed to be able to sing in this lovely and acoustically fine structure. It was modeled on Stift Schlägl, a monastery church at Aigen, Upper Austria, and reflects the Austrian and Bavarian origins of Saint Agnes founding families. Its 205-foot high Zwiebelturm (onion tower) is a landmark visible throughout Saint Paul s Frogtown neighborhood. Visitors from diverse backgrounds We always are pleased to welcome visitors, especially those who have never before experienced Mass in the grand tradition of the Catholic Church. We especially welcome groups of students, whatever their personal faiths. The parish will be happy to reserve pews for groups; simply call the office at (651) several days before your visit. Purchase our recordings The Chorale has recorded music by Beethoven, Haydn and Gounod, plus Christmas music. These compact discs are available from Leaflet Missal Company, 976 West Minnehaha Avenue, Saint Paul, ( ) and at leafletonline.com. Thank you for your attendance and support! 8 More Music at Saint Agnes Saint Agnes Chamber Choir The Saint Agnes Chamber Choir is an a cappella ensemble dedicated to singing the masterpieces of the High Renaissance. The choir performed for the first time in Jenny Geach organized a group of women to join the Schola Cantorum and sing William Byrd s Mass for Three Voices. Mary LeVoir directed the newly formed group, and the Chamber Choir continued to sing on a regular basis, but not on a set schedule. In 1991, Donna May became the director of the Choir and in 1993 the Chamber Choir began to sing the anticipatory Mass of the 1st Sunday of each month during the regular choral season (September through June). During the current Liturgical Season the Chamber Choir will sing a more varied schedule including several Sunday 10:00 a.m. Masses, solemnity Feast Days, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. If you are interested in participating in the choir, contact Donna May at dmay@churchofsaintagnes.org. Rehearsals are on Sundays immediately following the 10:00a.m. Mass. All are welcome to sit in on a rehearsal to see if this ensemble is for you Chamber Choir Mass Schedule Sunday, September 30, 10:00 a.m. 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Missa La, La Maistre Pierre by Orlando di Lasso Thursday, November 1, 5:15 p.m. Solemnity of All Saints Missa O Quam Gloriosum est Regnum by Tomás Luis de Victoria Friday, November 16, 7:30 p.m. EF Requiem Mass Requiem a 4 Voce by Tomás Luis de Victoria Saturday, December 8, 10:00 a.m. The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Missa O Magnum Mysterium by Tomás Luis de Victoria Sunday, December 16, 10:00 a.m. 3rd Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) Missa O Magnum Mysterium by Tomás Luis de Victoria 8

Palestrina The Most Holy Trinity Saint Agnes Schola Cantorum Gregorian chant has been associated with the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale since its founding. By 1975, guided by Monsignor Richard Schuler, a number of volunteers had begun the custom of singing Sunday vespers weekly and the full office of Tenebrae during Holy Week. In 1979, Monsignor Schuler appointed Paul LeVoir to direct the Gregorian chant. LeVoir developed the Schola as a men s choir, added a number of new singers over the years, and continued the practices his predecessors began. Today, the Schola Cantorum for the year-round Sunday solemn Masses boasts of up to twenty members, and is considered a training ground for many of the seminarians with whom the Parish of Saint Agnes is blessed. The Schola also sings for a Latin Mass every Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. Saint Agnes Parish Choir Under the direction of Mary Elizabeth LeVoir, D.M.A., this is a liturgical choir composed of members of Saint Agnes Parish. It sings at the 8:30 AM Sunday Mass from September through June. The Parish Choir sings classical choral music from a wide variety of musical styles and historical periods, in both Latin and English, with emphasis on traditional Catholic hymns and motets. The Parish Choir has been asked to sing with the Cathedral Choir in February, 2019 for the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Among the candidates to be confirmed will be those from the Church of Saint Agnes. 9
