3 S A F F R O N W A L D E N M U S I C F E S T I V A L 2019 This will be County High s seventh Music Festival and the Winners Concert will be held in Saffron Hall, our magnificent concert venue. We are all very much looking forward to involving the local community in this great opportunity to showcase the musical talents of young people and give them the opportunity to demonstrate their musical abilities in this inspiring and exciting auditorium. A B O U T T H E F E S T I V A L The Music Festival is divided into six sections with an adjudicator for each one: Piano, Brass, Woodwind, Vocal, Strings and Guitar. This year, due to the popularity of our Piano section, we will be splitting this into two Pre-Grade 1 to Grade 4 and Grade 5 and above. We have six professional musicians coming to adjudicate throughout the weekend. The adjudicators will listen and give feedback to all of our entrants and award medals to performers whom they feel are particularly outstanding. Every performer will receive written feedback and a certificate. Each instrument section has various classes ranging from Pre-Grade 1 to advanced level. The winner of the Challenge Cup (Grade 7-8) will receive a trophy. The adjudicators will choose an overall winner from each section to go forward to the Winners Concert.. T H E W I N N E R S C O N C E R T The Festival culminates in the Winners Concert, which will be held in Saffron Hall.at 5pm on the Sunday afternoon. The six section winners of the Festival, chosen by the adjudicators, all perform in a Young Musician of the Year style final. An overall Festival winner is chosen by the panel of adjudicators to receive the prestigious Saffron Walden Music Festival Trophy. Our concert adjudicators this year will be Jane Patterson and Philip Sunderland.

4 S A F F R O N W A L D E N C O U N T Y H I G H S C H O O L Saffron Walden County High School is hugely excited to once again be hosting the Saffron Walden Music Festival. SWCHS has a deserved reputation for musical excellence. Over 320 pupils receive instrumental tuition and the school has 17 different musical ensembles. Students are also given numerous opportunities to perform in any of the four annual concerts or as part of a more informal lunchtime recital series. We are also extremely proud of our successful Music Academy Programme, which continues to draw in high numbers of the most talented musicians from across Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. In recent years, the school s musical reputation has also been enhanced by the addition of Saffron Hall. The Hall and its programme has allowed our pupils to not only perform in a world-class concert venue but also to work together with professional musicians of the highest standard. It is in collaboration with Saffron Hall that we have greatly enhanced singing and string playing in the school over the last few years. In addition to this, we are proud to work in partnership with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Saffron Hall and Essex Music Hub to host the Saffron Centre for Young Musicians (SCYM), a specialist Saturday school offering high quality musical training to students aged 5 to 18. Music is at the heart of SWCHS and the Music Festival chimes perfectly with the ethos of the school. Not only does it provide young people with the opportunity to compete with each other in a friendly atmosphere but it also gives them the opportunity to learn more about themselves as performers and how to communicate successfully to an audience. We look forward to hearing what this year s musicians can achieve. Caroline Derbyshire Executive Headteacher Polly Lankester Associate Headteacher
