2 The reason WHY you should study music in Hungary With its lively musical life and internationally renowned performers, Hungary ranks high among the countries which boast of centuries-old musical traditions. Among the greatest musicians of the past are Franz Liszt, Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Ernő Dohnányi. Contemporary musicians include the late Sir George Solti, Zoltán Kocsis, Iván Fischer and Sándor Déki Lakatos Jr., György Kurtág, Péter Eötvös, György Ligeti. The Hungarian Kodály music education system is known and acknowledged worldwide. The Hungarian dance-house method of teaching folk dance and music has been inscribed on UNESCO s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Hungarian jazz musicians such as Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Mihály Dresch, Miklós Birta, Peter Szendőfi, Ferenc Schreck or Daniel Szabó are unquestionably in the vanguard of world jazz. Influences of the extremely rich cultural environment provide young musicians with ample sources of inspiration.

Because you will get an immersion into the rich traditions of the folk music specific only to the Carpathian Basin that makes Hungarian modern music unique in style. Because Hungarian pop culture is extremely vivacious and diverse, and this segment of the music scene has also been integrated into the curriculum. Because rehearsal rooms, studios (opportunity for broadcasting) as well as national and international concert opportunities provide ample grounds for acquiring the necessary practical knowledge and establish a career in the music industry. 4 About the Program The course is designed to appeal to any musician who has an interest in Jazz and a reasonable ability to play their chosen instrument or sing and who wish to prepare for carrying on academic studies at bachelor s level at any institution of higher education worldwide. It also provides a route to entry onto the KJU undergraduate degree program of BA in Vocal and Instrumental Performance with Jazz, Pop- Rock and Ethno Track Options on condition the participant will have attained the pass mark by the end of the Foundation Year. On completion of the program a CD of outstanding performances selected by an expert jury will be released as well as possibilities for performance on the stages of different summer festivals around Hungary will be secured.

6 The Admission requirements When I first moved to Europe, I was very pleasantly surprised by the fact that the jazz-instruction had a very high level. While teaching within the masterclasses at Kodolanyi, I also got the chance to experience firsthand just how well prepared my fellow teachers were and was also quite impressed by the infrastructure available at Kodolanyi. There really is every opportunity for their graduating students to transition into the blood flow of world-jazz at the highest level possible.
