T H E C I T Y O F N E W Y O R K O F F I C E O F T H E M A Y O R N E W Y O R K, N Y September 11, 2011 Dear Friends: It is an honor to welcome everyone to Avery Fisher Hall for today s September 11 Concert of Commemoration, presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York. The attacks of September 11, 2001 changed our world forever. This year, as we mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks, New Yorkers can be proud that the National September 11 Memorial is opening, and that Lower Manhattan is more alive than ever. The 9/11 Memorial will provide a powerful and lasting place of reflection and remembrance, and it will help ensure that future generations know the story of New York s grief, our resilience, and our shared hope for a more peaceful world. In the days and weeks after the attacks, we vowed we would never forget, and that we would work together to build a brighter future. We will continue to keep that solemn commitment to those who perished, to their families, and to the courageous men and women who helped us recover. As you pay tribute to those we lost, I join you in honoring their lives, and in finding inspiration in their memories and in our City s enduring and indomitable spirit. Sincerely, Michael R. Bloomberg Michael R. Bloomberg Mayor

Notes on the Program SAMUEL BARBER Adagio for Strings Born March 9, 1910, West Chester, Pennsylvania; Died January 23, 1981, New York, New York Samuel Barber s Adagio for Strings has become associated with times of national mourning. Upon such occasions as the deaths of presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy as well as other notable figures, the Adagio for Strings was heard on radio stations as well as concert halls across the country. Its emotion-laden expressivity, elegiac motion, and sheer tonal beauty create a musical expression which appears to embody and give voice to our collective grief. As we commemorate yet another national tragedy, the events of 9/11/01, it is fitting that once again we experience this powerfully expressive composition. RENÉ CLAUSEN Memorial Born April 17, 1953, Faribault, Minnesota Memorial is a composition for mixed chorus, orchestra and baritone solo. Though presented as one continuous movement, the composition follows a program that comprises four sub-sections September Morning, The Attack, Prayers, and Petitions. The first two sections reflect the actual chain of events leading to and including the attacks upon the World Trade Center towers. The music of destruction, however, is kept to a minimum in favor of musical emphasis upon a possible spiritual response to these events. Healing, cleansing and hope are the main themes of the work. September Morning paints the picture of a beautiful, sunlit morning in New York City. In this opening section the chorus is used as a section of the orchestra, intoning wordless vocalizes in a Debussy-like texture. Premonition of the attack is then heard in the orchestra as the music moves into The Attack sequence. As might be expected, the attack on the World Trade Center towers inspires music that is highly dramatic, rhythmically intense, and colorful, making use of extended percussion and the entire range of both instrumental and choral forces. The third and fourth sections, subtitled Prayers and Petitions, respectively, move away from programmatic description of physical world events to musical evocation of spiritual responses to these events. The final section, Petitions, is an elegiac and introspective musical prayer for mercy, mutual understanding, and hope for the future. The primary text is presented, first sequentially and then simultaneously, in English, Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic. In juxtaposing these languages, some of which are the languages of the cultures at war with one another, it is the hope of the composer that in so doing we may find a common ground of higher being, and be called away from darkness into light. The piece ends with a quiet Kyrie a plea for God s mercy on this world. Notes by René Clausen

Text of Memorial Adonai! My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? -Mark 15:34 May I be peaceful. May you be peaceful. May we be peaceful. May we live with ease of heart. May we live in joy. -Traditional Buddhist meditation Gracious and loving God, pour forth your mercy upon us all. For those who have fallen, and are lost in the oblivion of rubble, Blanket them with your eternal light. Gracious and loving God, pour forth your mercy upon us all. For those whose souls have turned cold and empty, Grant them a large measure of your mercy, and a nutritious kernel of your kindness Grant them peace. Gracious and loving God, pour forth your mercy upon us all. For those whose dreams are haunted by images of horror; Enfold them in your loving embrace. Fill our hearts with your healing love. Gracious and loving God, pour forth your mercy upon us all. We pray for our enemies, all those who hate us; we condemn them to your mercy, O God. Gracious and loving God, pour forth your mercy upon us all. If there be any grain of hatred in us, wash us clean and cleanse us. Move us to the common ground of Your Being, O God. Roy Hammerling, Concordia College Religion Department Hebrew Adonai, vehaer panecha, venivashea. Arabic (transliteration) Ya Rab Naw war Alaina. Latin Domine Deus, ostende lucem tuam, Et salvi erimus. Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison. KARL JENKINS For the Fallen: In Memoriam Alfryn Jenkins Born February 17, 1944, Neath, Wales, U.K. Laurence Binyon s iconic poem is recited across the world every Remembrance Day; this setting, which incorporates the Last Post (played by trumpets) in the orchestration, is dedicated to the memory of my uncle, a violist, Pilot Officer Alfryn Jenkins, Text of For the Fallen Laurence Binyon With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. O God, shine your light on us, and we shall be saved. O God shine your light on us. O God, shine your light on us, and we shall be saved. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. captain of a Lancaster bomber which was lost in action, together with his all-welsh crew, during a raid over Berlin in We met in 1944, although I don t remember it of course. I d just been born and he was on his last leave before his fateful mission. As an homage to him, it opens with a viola solo. The first performance took place at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on November 13, Note by Karl Jenkins They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

KARL JENKINS The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is the result of a special millennial commission from the Royal Armouries and the latest in a six century-old tradition of Armed Man masses that take the15th-century French song L Homme Armé as their starting point. The Mass begins with the beat of drums, the orchestra gradually building to the choir s entrance, singing the 15th century theme tune The Armed Man. After the scene is set, the style and pace change, and we are prepared for reflection by first the Muslim Call to Prayers (Adhaan) and then the Kyrie. Next, to a plainsong setting, we hear words from the Psalms asking for God s help against our enemies. The Sanctus that follows is full of menace, and has a primeval, tribal character that adds to its power. The menace grows in the next movement as Kipling s Hymn Before Action builds to its final devastating line, Lord grant us strength to die. War is now inevitable. Charge! opens with a seductive paean to martial glory which is followed by the inevitable consequence war in all its uncontrolled cacophony of destruction, then the eerie silence of the battlefield after the battle and, finally, the burial of the dead. Surely nothing can be worse than this? But think again. At the very center of the work is Angry Flames, an excerpt from a poem about the horrors of the atom bomb attack on Hiroshima. The Agnus Dei, with its lyrical chorale theme, reminds us of Christ s ultimate sacrifice. The Benedictus heals those wounds in its slow and stately affirmation of faith and leads us to the final, positive climax of the work. This begins back where we started in the 15th century with Lancelot and Guinevere s declaration, born of bitter experience, that peace is better than war. Note by Guy Wilson, Master of The Armouries, Britain s oldest national museum Text of The Armed Man 1. The Armed Man L Homme Armé, written L homme armé doit on douter? On a fait partout crier, Que chacun se viegne armer d un haubregon de fer. The armed man must be feared. Everywhere it has been decreed That every man should arm himself With an iron coat of mail. 2. 9 His style and integrity has transcended musical boundaries encompassing jazzrock with Soft Machine, the global crossover phenomenon Adiemus, soundtracks for Levis and British Airways, while stopping off along the way to score a Kiefer Sutherland movie, be a castaway on BBC Desert Island Discs, be featured by Melvyn Bragg on the ITV seminal South Bank Show and have been awarded the Freedom of the City of London. Erika won The Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions for South Carolina and competed at the regional competition at Spivey Hall in Erika was most recently seen in The New York Philharmonic s production of Janáček s The Cunning Little Vixen. erikagracepowell.com Charlotte Daw Paulsen Charlotte Daw Paulsen, mezzo-soprano, possesses a voice described as unusually rich and complex. She received critical acclaim in the New York Times for Rossini s Petite Messe Solennelle: The real star, along with the chorus, was Charlotte Daw Paulsen a mezzo-soprano with real contralto gravity and power in her lower register. In the Agnus Dei, her performance grew dramatic in the best sense and utterly gripping.

Known as a fine interpreter of Oratorio, she is frequently invited to perform works of depth and emotional expression, such as the United States premieres of Stabat Mater, The Armed Man a Mass for Peace, and Gloria by Karl Jenkins and New York City s premier of Et la vie l emporte by Frank Martin with I Cantori. Brian Cheney Brian Cheney is emerging as one of opera s most versatile, and exciting tenors. The protégé of legendary tenor Jerry Hadley, Mr. Cheney is quickly gaining national acclaim for his portrayal of characters such as Nemorino in L elisir d amore, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Jose in Carmen, Rodolfo in La Boheme, the Duke in Rigoletto, Candide in Candide and Tom Rakewell in The Rake s Progress. Tenor Brian Cheney s portrayal of Don José was the most effective dramatic and vocal realization of character in the production...this excellent singer revealed a voice of amazing power and great beauty. Cheney s booming tenor voice and effective dramatic realization of the passionate Don José soon made him the audience s favorite character. Classical Voice of North Carolina The Really Big Chorus The Really Big Chorus is the U.K. s largest choral society with more than 11,000 singing members. It began life in 1974 when Canadian Don Monro, a student at Imperial College, University of London, got together with fellow scientists to hire the Royal Albert Hall and fill it with amateur singers for the very first Messiah from Scratch. Thirtyfive years later, Concerts from Scratch now puts on three concerts a year at the Hall: Messiah from Scratch in November, a Summer Singday in July (always the last concert in the Hall before the BBC Promenade Concerts) and a May event too. The premise is straightforward: you learn the music, turn up, and sing! Messiah from Scratch is just that no rehearsal at all for the chorus, just an electrifying, adrenalinefilled performance. The other concerts have rehearsals the day of the performance with the English Festival Orchestra and professional soloists under the baton of distinguished conductors such as Sir David Willcocks, Brian Kay (who is our current principal conductor) and John Rutter. The Really Big Chorus also hosts choral vacations and relaxing musical cruises.
