3 About MASO Established in 1981, the Montana Association of Symphony Orchestras purpose is to encourage, promote and assist in the maintenance and development of quality musical programs throughout the state of Montana. MASO is a state-wide organization which shares resources, encourages networking and supports orchestra, choirs, professional staff, community volunteers and musicians. In addition to the Young Artists Competition, MASO has been responsible for the presentation of annual conferences featuring nationally respected symphony orchestra professionals. Past projects have included the commissioning of an original composition celebrating Montana s statehood, residency of the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, DC) and the development of a reciprocal music lending library. MASO is funded by dues assessed from member orchestras, the Montana Arts Council, the Montana Cultural Trust, D A Davidson Companies, the Gilhausen Family Foundation and the sales of Montana is a Symphony license plates available from your county treasurer or motor vehicle registration department. As a recipient of two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for outreach to underserved populations, MASO is proud to be considered a leader among state-wide coalitions which enhance and benefit the cultural climate in the State of Montana. C About the COMPETITION Every two years, the Montana Association of Symphony Orchestras sponsors the Young Artist Competition. The Competition has been developed to recognize and encourage Montana s musical talent. The Competition is broken into three divisions; Junior (ages 13 through 15), Senior (ages 16 through high school graduate) and College (post-high school through age 22). There are three prizes offered in each division; a Winner, a Runner-Up and an Honorable Mention. Winners in each division receive a cash prize; $450 for Junior, $650 for Senior and $1,000 for College. In addition, winners in each category are guaranteed a performance of their award-winning selection with a Montana symphony orchestra. Musicians apply by submitting an application describing their musical experience to date along with an audio file of the selection they intend to perform at the Competition. These applications are divided into the three divisions and then sent out to MASO screening judges for evaluation. The screening judges then forward on recommendations for those musicians who will then be invited to perform a live audition. Three nationally recognized judges adjudicate the live performances in and award prizes. Today you will have the privilege of hearing some of Montana s finest musical talent. Being present for these performances causes the audience of friends, family members and fellow musicians to be inspired by the amazing accomplishment of these youthful Montana musicians.

6 THE JUDGES THOMAS COOK is Professor Emeritus of Music at The University of Montana, in Missoula. Prior to his retirement, he served UM for fifteen years as Director of Bands and Professor of Trumpet, ten as Chair of the Department of Music, two as Interim Chair of the Department of Art, and three years as Director of Special Projects for the Dean of the School of Fine Arts. Since retirement from U of M, he has served as Interim Chair of the Division of Fine Arts at Friends University, in Wichita, Kansas, and as Director of Books and Operations for The College Music Society. Currently, Dr. Cook is a program host and board operator for Montana Public Radio and can be heard over the air or online at mtpr.org on Thursday mornings. His earned degrees include a Bachelor of Arts from Central College, Pella, Iowa; a Master of Music from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa; and a Doctor of Arts from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado. MEGAN KARLS is in her seventh year as violinist in the Great Falls Symphony s Cascade Quartet. She also serves as principal second violin of the Great Falls Symphony. In addition to these responsibilities, she has enjoyed performing with the Symphony, the Yellowstone Chamber Players, the String Orchestra of the Rockies, the Intermountain Opera, and the Symphony.

PHILIP AABERG, a native Montanan, has gained international acclaim as a pianist and composer. Phil writes music that connects a global audience to the sweeping landscape of the West.

His compositions are noted for their rigorous keyboard technique, diverse influence and colorful compositional style. Aaberg studied at Harvard University on a Leonard Bernstein Scholarship.

7 PHILIP AABERG, a native Montanan, has gained international acclaim as a pianist and composer. Phil writes music that connects a global audience to the sweeping landscape of the West. Although classically trained, Aaberg s compositions incorporate elements of jazz, bluegrass, and rock. He is best known for his solo piano work, yet he is most at home in the chamber jazz genre. His compositions are noted for their rigorous keyboard technique, diverse influence and colorful compositional style. Aaberg studied at Harvard University on a Leonard Bernstein Scholarship. After university he gained attention playing in the San Francisco blues scene. Due to his wide range of abilities he has toured with such artists as Peter Gabriel, John Hiatt, Kenny Rogers and the Doobie Brothers. He has performed with the Boston Pops, the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival and several of Montana s orchestras. Aaberg has performed on over two hundred albums, including PBS s All-American Jazz. He received a 2002 Emmy nomination for his Live from Montana album. Megan is a passionate advocate of living composers and is a founding member of the contemporary music ensemble, the Enid Trio. In the summers she serves on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (MI), Superior String Alliance Camp (MI), the Camp Festival Amadeus (MT), as well as performing with the Pine Mountain Music Festival (MI). Megan holds degrees, with honor, from Lawrence University and the University of Iowa in both political science and music. In addition to her active performance schedule, Megan is dedicated to teaching the next generation of violinists.
