2 20 x KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ TIROL NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL 2013 is a jubilee anniversary year for the KLANGSPUREN Festival because the Tyrolean festival for new music will be taking place for the twentieth time a very good reason to celebrate and be celebrated. Having outgrown its teenage years, KLANGSPUREN has long since established itself as an outstanding tradition in Tyrol, yet has also remained as young, fresh, and imaginative as ever. With the International Ensemble Modern Academy, which has been a core component of the festival for many years, and the many and varied activities for music lovers of all ages, such as KLANGSPUREN BARFUSS, KLANGSPUREN MOBIL, KLANGSPUREN LAUTSTARK UND LAUTSTÄRKER, CAFÉ KLANGSPUREN, KLANGSPUREN GARTEN FÜR JUNGES KLANGGEMÜSE, among others, the KLANGSPUREN Festival has built a network of offshoots that testify to the flexibility of the festival, its wide scope, and its year-round activity as a platform committed to performing and instructing new music. KLANGSPUREN aims at openness, participation, partnership, and communication. The 2013 anniversary edition will especially underscore this aspect by presenting concerts and installations in public spaces with the active participation of inhabitants and local artists. Embedded in and inspired by the beauty of Tyrol s landscape as well as its old cities and villages, Neue Musik und romantisches Erbe (New Music and Romantic Legacy) becomes a thematic focus of the festival, which also influences the selection of pieces for the Klangspuren International Ensemble Modern Academy. Yet, the festival will still be presenting the most cutting-edge and modern forms of new music as well as many very young composers and musicians. Matthias Osterwold, Artistic Director

3 10 x KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY CALL FOR APPLICATIONS also marks a special anniversary for the KLANGSPUREN International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA): it is the tenth edition of KLANGSPUREN International Ensemble Modern Academy, which has since its inception in 2004 developed into one of the most relevant and most successful projects of the Tyrolean festival for new music. The high standards of the Academy are vouched for by prominent figures who have each left their mark during their terms as Composer in Residence: György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Steve Reich, Benedict Mason, Michael Gielen, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Matalon, Johannes Maria Staud, Heinz Holliger, George Benjamin, and Unsuk Chin. In 2013 Hans Zender, composer, interpreter and music theorist, in collaboration with the instructors of the Ensemble Modern will rehearse several outstanding contemporary compositions. These works will be performed at three festival concerts on September 14 and 15, 2013 and on September 8 as part of the wonderful event Rent a Musician in which private households, institutions, or companies can book a small concert to be performed on one s own premises. Special thanks are due to the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation as well as the Tourismusverband Innsbruck for supporting the Klangspuren International Ensemble Modern Academy. The call for applications is aimed at young musicians who are close to finishing up their studies and are interested in taking on the special challenges of twentieth and twenty-first century music. 4 HANS ZENDER COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE It is difficult to describe Hans Zender s music in only a few words. Far too varied and diverse are the approaches and paths it takes; far too complex are the tonally rendered thoughts that reflect a subtile examination of the current cultural and social situation and intellectual horizons that extend beyond the borders of Europe. It embodies the coexistence of seriousness and humor, construction and collage, structural thinking and expressive gesture. Many of his compositions are based on sophisticated microtonal harmonics. Yet Zender, who as a conductor has over the decades gained much practical experience in working with musicians, also considers the playability, the feasibility of performing his works. It is above all this aspect of his many abilities that make him predestined to work with the Klangspuren International Ensemble Modern Academy. His extensive œuvre can be divided into various work groups or cycles, which often develop over the course of long periods of time. In a large part of his work there is an implicit or explicit reference to literary sources, which suggests an expert familiarity with world literature. Take the three large operas he has written to date: Stephen Climax (based on Ulysses by James Joyce and Symeon, der Stylit by Hugo Ball), Don Quijote de la Mancha (based on Cervantes masterpiece), and Chief Joseph about the clash between Native American and Western civilizations. In the Cantos (including Logos-Fragmente) and other vocal works for varied ensembles one finds an intensive examination of religious and philosophical content; reflected in the cycle Lo-shu, in Kalligraphien and in compositions with Japanese titles (e.g. Issei no kyô) is his interest in Far Eastern, especially Zen philosophy, in its fundamentally other conception of time. The cycle Hölderlin lesen fits in well with the theme of KLANGSPUREN 2013 Neue Musik und romantisches Erbe (New Music and Romantic Legacy), as does a series of adaptations of romantic works referred to by Zender as a composed interpretation : his large work Schumann-Phantasie for orchestra, the adaptation of Schubert s Winterreise (with varied instrumentation), and his most recent composition 33 Veränderungen über 33 Veränderungen based on Beethoven s late work, Diabelli Variations. The history of Ensemble Modern is inextricably linked to Hans Zender, who will run the Academy alongside ensemble members: Zender not only significantly encouraged and inspired the founding of Ensemble Modern, but has also been an important partner as a conductor and composer since the early 80s. Key works, such as Winterreise to be studied at the academy and 33 Veränderungen über 33 Veränderungen were written for Ensemble Modern. Both works will be performed at KLANGSPUREN Born in 1936 in Wiesbaden, Hans Zender studied composition with Wolfgang Fortner. He was principal conductor of the Bonn Opera ( ), General Director of Music in Kiel ( ), principal conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken ( ), the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hamburg State Opera ( ), and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra ( ), among others. Since 1999 he has been a permanent guest conductor and member of the artistic board of the SWR Symphony Orchestra in Baden-Baden and Freiburg he was professor of composition in Frankfurt. As a young man in Darmstadt and Donaueschingen and later during the course of his conducting and teaching career Hans Zender has continuously and strongly promoted the musical avant-garde, the work of Olivier Messiaen, Giacinto Scelsi, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, and Helmut Lachenmann, for example. Gerhard R. Koch of the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine sums up Zender s artistic stance as follows: Zender is everything but a composer of sound oases. He abhors generalization. His music, nevertheless, has moments of deep peacefulness, for through precise organization he has never lost sight of the spiritual component, the mysticism of the Christian Middle Ages or that of Japanese haiku. 5 INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY FRANKFURT New Music in a context of vibrant learning, experimentation, and discourse it was with these objectives in mind that the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) was founded in Over the last thirty years the Ensemble Modern has discussed and analyzed many artists and their works and has gained a deep understanding and extensive knowledge of music from the beginning of the 20th century onwards: a memory of modern music. Thanks to funding from the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Kunststiftung NRW, the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain, and the Allianz Cultural Foundation, the International Ensemble Modern Academy is able to offer a variety of training programs to give young artists the opportunity to share this memory. One of the core training programs is a one-year Master s program in contemporary music, which was launched in 2006 in cooperation with the University of Music and Performing Arts, Frankfurt am Main (HfMDK) and now attracts strong international interest. Young artists (instrumentalists, conductors, composers, and sound directors) work for an entire year with the members of the Ensemble Modern on the diverse repertoire of modern music. Famous composers and conductors are also regularly invited to participate. The results of this collaboration are presented in over 20 concerts each year in Germany and abroad. From 2012 on, the International Ensemble Modern Academy is also offering a scholarship in music mediation, supported by the ALTANA Kulturstiftung. The International Ensemble Modern Academy is member of the Ulysses Network, an alliance that was founded in 2012 and conjoins 14 musical institutions and academies from all over Europe. Through this network, which is funded with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, the International Ensemble Modern Academy can offer better conditions for the production and dissemination of works created within its context. In addition, the International Ensemble Modern Academy regularly offers master classes, for example in Paxos, Greece and at the KLANGSPUREN Festival in Schwaz in Austria. In 2005 successful classes were also held in Japan and Korea. In 2008, 2010, and 2011 this work was expanded in Tokyo. In 2010/11 and 2012 the Siemens Foundation, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and the Ensemble Modern jointly offered a training program for contemporary ensemble playing under the title contempo primo. In the field of education, the International Ensemble Modern Academy, in conjunction with the ALTANA Kulturstiftung and cultural institutions such as The Forsythe Company and several schools in Frankfurt, has since 2009 been organizing a unique cultural project: Over the course of one year, a weekly culture day / Kulturtag gives 7th- and 8th-grade pupils the opportunity to embark on an excursion through the various artistic disciplines (music, arts, dance, literature). In addition, since 2008 the International Ensemble Modern Academy has been conducting Epoche f, master classes designed especially for young musicians in cooperation with Lower Saxony s Jugend musiziert foundation.
