3 IN MEMORIAM DAN TIMIS (15 July February 2009) Brilliant representative of the Romanian music, IT and composer Dan Timis imposed and internationally through his highly complex, combining the most noble elements of tradition (including the wonderful Romanian vein) with innovations designed to change thinking componistica, thanks to techniques in rapidly developing specific digital art. Born on 15 July 1954 in Bucharest, as the only son of Master Vasile Timis, Dan began studying piano at the School of Music with distinguished professor Nr.5 Marta Paladi, then courses No.1 High School of Music (now High School "Dinu Lipatti "- where I had the privilege of classmate) and the Conservatoire" Ciprian Porumbescu " (the present National University of Music), where he graduated Composition Department, with the guidance of renowned representatives of the Romanian school, as Anatol Vieru, Stefan Niculescu, Aurel Stroe, Liviu Comes, Dinu Petrescu, Dinu Ciocan and Ioana Minei. Since the study was imposed by the extraordinary talent or componistic, but also by the enthusiasm shown in the direction of discovery with the help of computer, new solutions in developing sound expression - in this sense he continued successfully and in a plan initiated education experiments in Romania by Aurel Stroe and Grigore Moisil. Thus, in parallel studies conducted at the Conservatory of music, he attended courses and the Faculty of Automation and Computers, Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest. Marked by these experiences multidisciplinary creation of this period was distinguished by the major awards given by the Union of Composers and Musicologists from Romania and by the Conservatory "Ciprian Porumbescu - historically standing out of them is a series of reference works, such as the Cantata on the texts by Dimitrie Cantemir, the String Quartet (a masterpiece of the genre!), the splendid Sonata for

4 Clarinet and Piano, the Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, the marvellous Songs on poems by Tudor Arghezi and, last but not least, music for films designed to young directors - members of his generation, such as Horia Constantin and Dinu Lazar. He was a redoubtable pianist, consistent with promoting the creation of the Romanian Society "Music" (animated by the illustrious musicologist Radu Stan), both as soloist and as a member of the trio "NTN", along with clarinet virtuoso John Nedelciu and signatory of these lines (on cello) - all three are linked by the most profound feelings of friendship. After graduating from the Conservatoire as head of promotion in 1978, he participated in several editions of the summer courses at Darmstadt supported by Morton Feldman, Ton de Leeuw, Mauricio Kagel and Brian Ferneyhough, and at the conducting courses at Weimar coordinated by Igor Markevitch. In 1982 he settled in Paris, where he graduated and the Faculty of Science, after working as a professor at the prestigious IRCAM, which has designed, along with Rob Gross, new systems of audio files and apply the "Berkeley UNIX". In 1987 is invited to teach musical informatics at the University of Santa Barbara (USA), where it quickly and as founder of the Center for Experimental Music. Fundamental advances in the science of music was widely appreciated, effectively inducing a paradigmatic shift. Mention in this context his revolutionary studies, entitled "Method and system for editing digital audio information with music-like parameters (Audio-to- MIDI/MIDI-to-Audio feature, United States Patent ) and Using time-stamped event entries to facilitate synchronizing data streams" (United States Patent ). They were immediately applied by large companies in which the specialist Dan Timis and a thorough research: Opcode Systems (as Senior Programmer in the "Vision Studio" software with several distinguished awards), Euphonix, Zoom, Antares, Kind of Loud, TuneTo.com, Arboretum Systems (as Director of Research and Development), Muse Research (as a principal adviser in creating the "New Receiver Pro 2" and "Hi Pro) and Apple (where he helped to develop ipod and itunes).

5 We can thus say that Dan Timis has been a celebrity in this current musical science - key advances leading to the design of new coordinates of the XXI century music. He worked enormously dedicating the body and soul in this research field of avant-garde, creative and componistice itself through many musical applications subordinate its investigations. Used in this fever, perpetuate the exploration of new sound - involving days and nights of intense work - take the cord snapped, in a totally unexpected, in fatidical 3 days in February He was very loved by his colleagues and American musicians and programmers, what they dedicated an exciting tribute to the Internet, "Tribute to Dan Timis : His disappearance is an irreparable loss for the American and Romanian musicians. 6 1 IN MEMORIAM DAN TIMIS (15 Iulie Februarie 2009) Stralucit reprezentant al muzicii romanesti, compozitorul si informaticianul Dan Timis s-a impus si in plan international prin opera sa extrem de complexa, imbinand cele mai nobile elemente ale traditiei (inclusiv ale minunatului filon romanesc) cu inovatii menite sa revolutioneze gandirea componistica, gratie unor tehnici in plina evolutie, specifice artei digitale. Nascut pe data de 15 Iulie 1954 la Bucuresti, ca unic fiu al Maestrului Vasile Timis, Dan a inceput studiul pianului la Scoala de Muzica Nr.5 cu distinsa profesoara Marta Paladi, urmand apoi cursurile Liceului de Muzica Nr.1 (actualul Liceu Dinu Lipatti unde am avut privilegiul de a-i coleg de clasa) si ale Conservatoului Ciprian Porumbescu (actuala Universitate Nationala de Muzica), unde a absolvit Sectia Compozitie, beneficiind de indrumarea unor renumiti reprezentanti ai scolii romanesti, precum Anatol Vieru, Stefan Niculescu, Aurel Stroe, Liviu Comes,Dinu Petrescu, Dinu Ciocan si Ioana Minei. Inca din anii de studiu s-a impus prin extraordinarul sau talent componistic, dar si prin entuziasmul manifestat in directia descoperirii, cu ajutorul computerului, a unor noi solutii in dezvoltarea expresiei sonore in acest sens el continuand cu succes si intr-un plan superior experimentele initiate in tara noastra de Aurel Stroe si de Grigore Moisil. Astfel, in paralel cu studiile muzicale efectuate la Conservator, el a frecventat si cursurile Facultatii de Automatica si Calculatoare a Institutului Politehnic din Bucuresti. Marcata de aceste experiente multidisciplinare, creatia sa din acea perioada a fost distinsa cu importante premii acordate de Uniunea Compozitorilor si Muzicologilor din Romania si de Conservatorul Ciprian Porumbescu dintre acestea remarcandu-se si o serie de lucrari de referinta, precum Cantata pe texte de Dimitrie Cantemir, Cvartetul de Coarde (o capodopera a genului!), splendida Sonata pentru Clarinet si Pian, Trioul pentru Clarinet, Violoncel si Pian, impresionatele sale Lieduri pe versuri de Tudor Arghezi si, nu in ultimul rand, muzica conceputa pentru filmele unor tineri regizori colegi de generatie, precum Horia Constantin si Dinu Lazar. A fost si un redutabil pianist, promovand cu consecventa creatia romaneasca in cadrul Societatii Muzica (animate in acea perioada de ilustrul muzicolog Radu Stan), atat ca solist, cat si ca membru al trioului N-T-N, alaturi de exceptionalul clarinetist Ion Nedelciu si de semnatarul acestor randuri (la violoncel) toti trei fiind legati prin cele mai profunde sentimente de prietenie. Dupa absolvirea Conservatorului ca sef al promotiei 1978, el a participat la mai multe editii ale cursurilor de vara sustinute la Darmstadt de Morton Feldman, Ton de Leeuw, Mauricio Kagel si Brian Ferneyhough, precum si la cursurile de dirijat coordonate la Weimar de Igor Markevitch. In anul 1982 s-a stabilit la Paris, unde a absolvit si Facultatea de Informatica, activand ulterior si ca profesor la prestigiosul IRCAM, in cadrul caruia a proiectat, alaturi de Rob Gross, noi sisteme de fisiere sonore aplicate si in proiectul Berkeley UNIX.

7 2 In anul 1987 este invitat sa predea informatica muzicala la Universitatea din Santa Barbara (SUA), unde s-a remarcat si in calitate de fondator al Centrului de Muzica Experimentala. Inovatiile sale fundamentale in domeniul informaticii muzicale au fost unanim apreciate, determinand efectiv o schimbare paradigmatica. Mentionez in acest sens doua studii revolutionare, intitulate Method and system for editing digital audio information with music-like parameters (Audio-to-MIDI/MIDI-to-Audio feature, United States Patent ) si Using time-stamped event entries to facilitate synchronizing data streams (United States Patent ). Ele au fost imediat aplicate de marile companii de specialitate in cadrul carora Dan Timis si-a desavarsit cercetarile: Opcode Systems (ca Senior Programmer in realizarea Studio Vision, software distins cu mai multe premii), Euphonix, Zoom, Antares, Kind of Loud, TuneTo.com, Arboretum Systems (ca Director of Research and Development), Muse Research (in calitate de consilier principal in crearea New Receptor 2 Pro si Pro Max ), si Apple (unde a contribuit direct la elaborarea ipod si itunes). Putem astfel afirma ca Dan Timis a fost o somitate in domeniul atat de actual al informaticii muzicale inovatiile sale esentiale conducand la proiectarea unor noi coordonate ale muzicii secolului XXI. A muncit enorm, dedicandu-se trup si suflet cercetarii stiintifice in acest domeniu de avangarda, dar si creatiei componistice propriu-zise, prin numeroasele aplicatii muzicale subsumate investigatiilor sale. Epuizat in aceasta febrile, perpetua explorare a Noului sonor implicand zile si nopti de munca intense -, cordul i-a cedat, intr-un mod cu totul neasteptat, in fatidica zi de 3 Februarie 2009 A fost extrem de iubit si de colegii lui americani, ce i-au dedicat un tulburator omagiu pe Internet, Tribute to Dan Timis : Pentru muzicienii romani disparitia lui reprezinta o pierdere ireparabila.
