MESSAGE FROM AFFILIATE CHAIR Affiliates are gathering this fall in their Committees to listen to beautiful classical music performed by LA Phil musicians, other professionals or accomplished students. From this core of fellowship with likeminded members, Affiliates draw their strength and vibrancy. Centered in Committees, Affiliates continuously reach out to raise funds in their communities for the LA Phil and to volunteer at the LA Phil s education programs for children and youth. It s the essence of what we do as Affiliates and together we make a difference. Arlyss Burkett

2 Page 2 OPENING NIGHT MAKES HISTORY Affiliates participated in the historic Opening Night concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 8, 2009 as Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic launched their inaugural concert performing the world premiere of John Adams City Noir and Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 1 in D major. The concert was telecast across the United States via PBS Great Performances and throughout Europe, South America and Asia. Media from around the world attended the sold-out concert in the 2,265-seat Hall. LA Philharmonic President Deborah Borda called it the most excitement since the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Affiliates offered members a package of a concert ticket and an Affiliates Dinner following the concert, which included a donation to the LA Philharmonic youth education programs. Held in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion s fifth floor Salon A, a dining area overlooking night-lit Jacques Lipchitz Peace on Earth sculpture fountain, the buffet dinner offered the 104 members and guests an opportunity to mingle with members from other Affiliate committees. Thank you to Affiliate Dinner Chair Renee Mitchell for coordinating the event and to Affiliates@Large Committee President Nancy H o w a r d f o r t h e f l o r a l centerpieces. 3 Page 3 MUSIC MOBILE ORIENTATION ATTRACTS AFFILIATES The Affiliates 2009 Music Mobile Orientation, held at the Colburn School on October 9, started in the Olive Rehearsal Hall under the direction of Robert McAllister, Associate Dean. The session opened with a presentation of Baroque wind instruments by Adam and Rotem Gilbert from the USC Thornton School of Music. Music Mobile Co- Coordinator Margo Penney reports, They greatly enriched our understanding and appreciation of some of the early woodwind instruments, particularly the early oboe called the shawm. This was an exciting lead into our interactive encounter between our Affiliate docents and ten very accomplished Colburn students. The students presented the instruments that make up the contemporary orchestra. Their enthusiasm and infectious love for their instruments gave the Affiliate docents a greatly enriched understanding of the material they share with the third grade students through the Music Mobile program, reports Margo Penney. The Music Mobile van makes traveling music education possible. DUDAMEL FELLOWS PROGRAM LAUNCHED The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced recently the members of the new Dudamel Fellows David Afkham, from Germany, is one of four hand-picked Dudamel Fellows. Program for : David Afkham from Germany; Christian Vasquez and Diego Mathuez from Venezuela; and Perry So from Hong Kong. Each was handpicked by Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Artistic Staff of the LA Phil. Over the course of two months, each Fellow will participate as a cover conductor or extra musician with the orchestra, will have the opportunity to conduct or perform in at least one concert with musicians of the LA Phil, will be mentored by Dudamel and the LA Phil musicians, and will work on a weekly basis with students in a key LA Philharmonic education program, such as Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). Dudamel is passionate about bringing this program to life, as his very own musical career flourished because of the guidance he received by El Sistema, a publically funded musician training program of thousands of children in his native Venezuela. NEW MEMBER CONTEST To encourage Affiliate Committees to bring in new members, there is an exciting membership contest. The Committee that brings in the most new members, as a percentage of their active members, will win a prize. The prize? The Philharmonic will provide free bench seats to a Tuesday or Thursday concert at the Hollywood Bowl next summer, plus free use of the Volunteer Cottage, for all members of the winning committee. The winner will be announced at Spring Celebration on Thursday, May 20, 2010.

4 Page 4 CRESCENDO OFFERED KEYBOARD MYSTICISM AND THE ROMANTIC PERIOD Crescendo Coordinators Renee Mitchell, Peninsula Committee, and Marie Stiebing, Santa Monica-Westside Committee, welcomed sixty-three guests to the Crescendo XVIII 2009 program of organ and piano music performed by Los Angeles-based musician John Rusnak on October 25. Keyboard Mysticism and the Romantic Period enticed Affiliates to the concert held at the Los Altos United Methodist Church in Long Beach. Proficient as a pianist, organist, composer, producer, and songwriter, Rusnak entertained his audience with the music of Franz Liszt, Alexander Skryabin, Frederic Chopin, Marcel Dupre and his own compositions, 3 Dances for Piano. Performing on a rareedition Steinway, Rusnak introduced each piece with an explanation of its musical history and period. He performed Cortege Et Litanie by 20 th century French composer Marcel Dupre on an 1852 historic William B. Simmons pipe organ, rebuilt by Manuel Rosales and Associates, the same firm that built the organ in Walt Disney Concert Hall. A reception followed the concert. Students arrive in two buses at the Hollywood Bowl. While the Affiliate docents make their presentation in the Orchestra Lounge, the Affiliates Speakers Bureau members take the other students on a tour through the Hollywood Bowl and its Museum. Music Mobile Co- Coordinator Margo Penney says, This venue isn t complete without the traditional picnic at the end of the day before the students return to their schools. The Music Mobile docents also present the pre-concert Instrument Petting Zoo at the Toyota Symphonies for Youth concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall on selected Saturdays. Irene Naftulin, Westside Committee, presents the instruments at a Music Mobile Petting Zoo prior to a Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert. 5 Affiliates News Page 5 ENDOWMENT DONORS ATTEND LA PHILHARMONIC REHEARSAL Members of the Affiliates who were donors last year to the LA Philharmonic Endowment attended a recent LA Philharmonic rehearsal. Each year, a rehearsal is opened to Affiliates who have donated $100 or more the previous year to the Affiliates LA Philharmonic Endowment Fund. It was a wonderful musical morning, topped off by a terrific talk by the Philharmonic s young violinist, Robert Gupta. Mr. Gupta joined the Philharmonic when he was 19, and has just begun his third year in the orchestra. All agreed that the excellent concert and engaging talk with Mr. Gupta made it a very special morning, reports Coordinator DeAnne Hayes. Any Affiliate member who donates $100 or more this year to the Endowment Fund will be invited next year to another Philharmonic rehearsal with an artist speaker. SOUTHWEST HEIGHTS COMMITTEE T he So ut hw est Heights Philharmonic Committee works to encourage an understanding of and an appreciation for symphonic music among the communities of SouthWest Los Angeles. This includes a project supporting music at the Loyola Village Elementary School in Westchester. Member Melinda Goodall is the school principal. She reported in September that "music is alive at Loyola Village," with a 65-student orchestra, led by an LAUSD traveling music teacher, with violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone lessons for the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders; a 50-student African Drum and Dance Ensemble; and a 95-student Guitar Ensemble for all the 3rd graders. These students are becoming an exciting part of a musical tapestry, and preparing themselves to be the expressive performers, the creative teachers, and the reflective audience for tomorrow. The Loyola Village African Dance Ensemble gets moving.
