MESSAGE FROM AFFILIATE CHAIR The LA Phil Affiliates again participated as a group at the Opening Night Gala of the winter concert season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Special Events Coordinator Aida Gaona arranged for us to sit together in Orchestra East or West seats where we were close enough to see the expressions on Gustavo Dudamel s face as he conducted the Orchestra and his friend, Juan Diego Flórez, the tenor from Lima, Peru. Love songs set the tone for the evening. The concert, a program of overtures, bel canto arias and Latin American canciones, featured music by Rossini, Granda, Lara, Moncayo, Grever, and Gutierrez. Afterwards, we strolled down Grand Avenue to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion s Fifth Floor where we dined together. It s times like this Gala evening that bind the Affiliates together. Food, wine and music were the magic ingredients shaping friendships among Affiliates and their guests. Arlyss Burkett

3 Page 3 YOLA AT HOLA KICKS OFF IN RAMPART DISTRICT OF LOS ANGELES The second Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) kicked-off its program in the remodeled Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) neighborhood center, located across the street from Lafayette Park in the Rampart District. YOLA, Gustavo Dudamel s signature program, is a free music education program. A partnership between HOLA and the LA Philharmonic Association makes this second YOLA site possible. Affiliate Chair Arlyss Burkett and Co-Coordinator of Youth Activities Colleen Robertson represented the Affiliates at the YOLA at HOLA Kick-Off on October 16 th. YES, a picture is worth a thousand words! Above: Alums from HOLA served as tour guides for the YOLA at HOLA kick-off. USED INSTRUMENT DRIVE FOR YOLA SCHEDULED FOR MAY 2011 The YOLA intensive music education program now involves 300 children ages 2-17, at two locations in Los Angeles: YOLA at Expo Center and YOLA at HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles) Community Center. Dan Berkowitz, YOLA Manager, spoke to the Affiliate Presidents and Coordinators about this exciting program at the October 25 th Board meeting. The program is based on El Sistema, the Venezuelan program that shaped the life of Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and serves over 1 million children in Venezuela. Affiliates will handle the YOLA Used Instrument Drive to take place in May throughout Los Angeles County. All Affiliate Committees will be encouraged to collect used instruments, metronomes, music stands and other equipment. In charge of the new program is Affiliate Outreach Coordinator Meg Evans. You can reach her at or maspine@verizon.net. 4 Page 4 TOYOTA SYMPHONIES FOR YOUTH KICKS OFF SEASON The Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert series kicked off its new season on October 2 nd with Pianissimo: A Focus on the Piano. The theme of the day was dynamics -- pre-concert activities introduced the youngsters to the concept of dynamics: the use of volume and tempo to create sound, images, and movement. The youngsters and their families and friends were treated to an insiders look into the versatility and dynamics that the piano brings to solo performance, chamber music and full orchestra. The ingenuous program included pianist Yana Reznik and actor Carl Palmer as the piano technician, who took the audience on a journey through piano construction and the mechanics of each key stroke. The right combination of instrument, technician, composer and musician are the ingredients for creating dynamic music. Each concert requires about 40 volunteers for pre-concert activities on November 6 and 13; February 19 and 26, 2011; and April 23 and 30. Volunteers are asked to arrive at Walt Disney Concert Hall at 9:00 a.m., pre-concert activities begin at 10:00 a.m., and the concert is at 11:00 a.m. Volunteers who attended the Music Mobile Orientation, may work in the Instrument Petting Zoo pre-concert activity. Volunteers should contact their committee s youth activities or volunteer chair, or Colleen Robertson at , or colleen@cjrobertson.org Shirley Farley instructs on cymbals at the Instrument Petting Zoo MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM UPDATE New Member Symposium Affiliates were energized by guest speakers. Thank you to the sponsors of our 72 new members you have given them the gift of culture and camaraderie and the opportunity to hear the finest orchestra in the country! Membership Contest The Affiliates Membership Contest challenges committees to increase the number of dues-paying members. This means counting both the number of new members brought in as well as the number of returning members. The committee with the greatest increase will be the winner. The winning committee will be awarded free bench seats to a Tuesday or Thursday performance at the Hollywood Bowl, and free use of the Hollywood Bowl Volunteer Cottage for the ENTIRE committee. Membership Retention At the October 25 th Affiliates Board meeting, Membership Coordinator Sheri Gill led a miniworkshop to discuss the importance of membership retention. Presidents and Coordinators shared ideas on how to keep committees strong by increasing membership and, just as importantly, how to retain members by getting them involved. Sheri urged Presidents to share ideas on this topic during their committee board meetings. Four presidents of committees with high membership retention shared their committees practices. Only the income from endowment gifts will be allocated annually where the organizational need is the greatest, leaving the principal intact. Many donations are made in honor of a birthday, anniversary, as a hostess gift, or in memory of a loved one. Donations of $100 or more in one year entitle the donor to a bonus an invitation to attend an LA Phil rehearsal during the following year and a set of beautiful Walt Disney Concert Hall note cards. Forty-three Affiliate donors attended the Endowment Invitational Rehearsal held on October 29 th. As an additional bonus, Stacy Wetzel, first violin, chatted with the Affiliate audience during intermission. The rehearsal was conducted by Christian Zacharias and included music by Mozart, C.P.E. Bach, and Beethoven. Guest soloist Susan Graham sang arias by Mozart. It was a wonderful morning of music. Endowment Fund donation forms are available from your committee s president or by contacting the Affiliate Coordinator, DeAnne Hayes, at bhayes@earthlink.net or From left: Stacy Wetzel, first violin, DeAnne Hayes, Affiliate Endowment Fund Coordinator, and Arlyss Burkett, Affiliate Chair Musical Musings The spelling "oboe" was adopted into English from the Italian oboè, derived from the 17th-century pronunciation of the French word hautbois, a compound word made of haut ("high, loud") and bois ("wood, woodwind"). It s the reed that makes playing oboe so difficult because slight variations in temperature, altitude, weather, and climate will change a perfectly working reed into an unplayable collection of cane.

9 COMMITTEE OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN (COPW) COPW began its new season with excitement and verve. In July, 30 members and guests drove to San Luis Obispo for the Mozaic Festival (formerly the Mozart Festival), for three days of music, food, shopping and fun with friends, old and new. The highlight of the weekend was the Friday concert at Hearst Castle. It began with wine and hors d oeurves atop the Neptune Terrace, overlooking the outdoor swimming pool, with a breathtaking view of the ocean. An outstanding concert in Mr. Hearst s private movie theater followed. Saturday, the group enjoyed olive oil and wine tasting events followed by dinner in Paso Robles and a magnificent concert at Chapel Hill in Shandon. The audience gave the musicians standing ovations for every piece. The concert, entitled Best of the Baroque, certainly was that. The weekend ended with a Sunday brunch in San Luis Obispo. Before heading to Chapel Hill for the Saturday evening concert, members dined in Paso Robles. Page 9 COPW welcomed fall with a Musicale on September 25 th in the garden of a gorgeous house in Windsor Square.
