MESSAGE FROM AFFILIATE CHAIR It was glitz & glamour for LA Phil Affiliates on September 27th at the 2011 Opening Night Gala at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Congratulations to Sheri Gill, for her hard work in making this memorable evening a resounding success! Proceeds from the Gala will be donated to LA Phil s education programs. Bravo to Nan Flette for a delightful Get Acquainted party on August 21st at the Pinot Grill in the Music Center Plaza for Affiliate new and returning Board members and their guests. Summer has been very busy with a great deal of planning for the year ahead! Committed to the implementation of the Affiliates Six-Year Strategic Plan, we started the year off with a very successful Leadership Workshop chaired by Arlyss Burkett. Arlyss efforts and commitment are highly appreciated! Additional workshops for Membership and Fundraising led by authorities in both fields have been scheduled for the months of October and November. The Affiliates are off to an ambitious start, and a fun-filled year. The numerous activities will reflect our shared goal of supporting the LA Philharmonic and the music education for the children of Los Angeles. Please join me on this exciting journey! 2 OPENING NIGHT GALA AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL Page 2 The Affiliates recently celebrated "The Party of the Year," the LA Phil Opening Night Gala at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The group first gathered in fabulous seats to enjoy "Rhapsody in Blue," an all Gershwin concert conducted by our dynamic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and special guest Herbie Hancock. Then the party of 114 moved on to the Founders Room, where six waiters in white gloves, holding trays of white and red wine greeted us. This was followed by a gourmet three-course dinner, catered by Patina in impeccable style, and served on lavishly decorated tables. The conversation and camaraderie were lively with much of it centered on how lucky we were to have such an incredible Music Director and world-class orchestra to enjoy. We all heard Gershwin, but never like that! Those who attended confirmed it was an energy-filled and elegant evening, and vowed to return next year. The Founders Room was filled near capacity, but still had room for a few more guests. Make your plans now for 2012! Sheri Gill Sheri Gill, Opening Night Gala Coordinator and Aida Gaona, Chair of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates The evening began with the arrival of music stars Quincy Jones and Wayne Shorter, Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, film composer John Williams, music producer David Foster, and actors Don Johnson and Luke McFarlane, who walked a signature-blue carpet up to the Grand stairway of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Local officials in attendance included Los Angeles County Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Gloria Molina; Los Angeles City County President Pro Tempore Jan Perry; and LA City Council President Eric Garcetti. They were joined by Gala Co-Chairs Joan Hotchkis and David C. Bohnett, along with more than 600 Gala patrons for the special evening.

3 MEMBERSHIP WORKSHOP TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 Page 3 In keeping with the Affiliates goal to kick off the new season with a bang, here is the next training workshop for our leaders, the upcoming Membership Workshop. This is your opportunity to work with a panel of experts and to pick their brains as to how to attract more members and retain them. The details are in the invitation below. All Presidents, Membership and Affiliate Committee Board members are welcome to attend! The event is complimentary and includes coffee and pastries, panel discussion, Q&A, and breakout sessions. 4 LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP (l-r) Leadership Workshop Leaders Arlyss Burkett (Long Beach Auxiliary), Aida Gaona, Affiliate Chair (International Committee) and Sheri Gill (Peninsula Committee) presented Affiliate advice and procedures to 27 committee leaders on September 30th at the Volunteer Cottage. The Affiliates sponsored a Leadership Workshop for Committee Presidents and potential Committee Presidents and other interested members on September 30th at the Volunteer Cottage. Twentyseven people attended the threehour workshop, which included a discussion of what it means to be a support group and how committees support the LA Philharmonic. Break-out sessions included discussions on best practices for membership recruiting, committee programs, recruiting volunteers for AFFILIATES NEW MEMBER SYMPOSIUM OCTOBER 18, 2011 Sixty participants attended the annual Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates New Member Symposium held at the WDCH Choral Hall on Tuesday, October 18. Affiliate Membership Co-Coordinators Katherine Dagermangy and Marilyn Kezirian, introduced the presenters and Philharmonic staff. Opening the program was the Affiliate Chair, Aida Gaona, who gave an overview of the mission, components and activities of the numerous groups that comprise the Affiliates. Three Directors of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association each outlined her responsibilities and created a vivid picture of the depth and breadth of the workings of this major Los Angeles cultural institution. Mary Deissler, Interim Vice President of Development; Gretchen Nielsen, Director of Educational Initiatives; and Leni Boorstin, Director of Community and Government Affairs each discussed the inner details and the far-reaching community impact of the Philharmonic s multiple programs and projects in addition to its world-class orchestra performances. Thousands of lives in the diverse arena that is Los Angeles are touched by the agenda of the LA Phil. Following a catered lunch, all guests were given a guided backstage tour of the concert hall led by members of the Speakers Bureau. This Symposium welcomes new volunteers to the Philharmonic family and inspires their engagement in a fulfilling and enjoyable journey. The LA Philharmonic will play Gustav Holst's THE PLANETS for all 6 concerts as follows: All 2012 concerts will be in the A.M. at Walt Disney Concert Hall SPEAKERS BUREAU Tues. For information, contact DeAnne Hayes, Coordinator, at deanne@kbhayes.com or The Speakers Bureau only has two main meetings per year and no events, per se, but our mission is second to none! In September alone, several of our members gave talks about the WDCH and Hollywood Bowl to various visiting groups. October and November finds many of our members giving tours of the Hollywood Bowl in conjunction with the Music Mobile. Lastly, two of our members are planning a WDCH backstage tour for the New Members Symposium. Marilyn Kelliher, President, Speakers Bureau AFFILIATES PRESIDENTS/COORDINATORS MEETING, SEPTEMBER 26, 2011 Affiliate Chair Aida Gaona expressed her enthusiasm for a successful year ahead. This year s theme is TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More. The special guest was Dan Berkowitz, Manager, Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) who provided a review of last year s YOLA program and gave highlights of YOLA Dan Berkowitz, Manager, YOLA going forward, now in its fourth year. YOLA students experienced many exciting activities last year, including the presentation of ten students on the Jay Leno Show to play with the Tonight Show Band. Also the top 40 students from the third-year level had the opportunity to be mentored by the Colburn School students. This past year, 30 performances took place among WDCH, the Hollywood Bowl, and the L.A. Convention Center. Next season, the combined YOLA/HOLA students will perform with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela at the Cathedral on Jan 30. Their annual concert will be held at WDCH on May 5. During the Symphonies for Schools week, there will be a coming together of nearly 1200 musicians and singers performing the Ode to Joy. The YOLA Heart of LA Youth Orchestra program is a partnership between the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA). Sara Kim, Director, Individual Giving, LAPA, said she appreciated and supported Aida and all the work being done by the Affiliates. She said several staff members of the Development Department will be participating in the Nov. 3 fundraising workshop. 6 Page 6 AFFILIATES GET ACQUAINTED PARTY August 21, 2011 Affiliates Chair Aida Gaona thanked Nan Flette for organizing a wonderful Get Acquainted Party for Affiliate Board Members on the Music Center Plaza. The exciting evening was enjoyed by the 37 Affiliates and guests who attended. Ole was the theme for the annual Get Acquainted Party for Affiliate Board members (Committee Presidents and Affiliate Coordinators). It was a beautiful summer evening in the lovely outdoor Patina Grill where a mix of new and returning Board members enjoyed an elegant Spanish-themed buffet dinner featuring a delicious and extremely bountiful paella elegantly presented in a very large bowl. A young musician, Shayna Goldstein, provided a musical background of relaxing popular songs, accompanying herself on guitar throughout the evening. Nan Flette was the Affiliate Coordinator for this most pleasurable evening. There was the time violinist Fritz Kreisler and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff were performing together and Kreisler lost his place. "Where are we?" he whispered. "In Carnegie Hall," Rachmaninoff whispered back, and kept on playing.

7 Page 7 ENDOWMENT FUND The Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates Endowment is the reserve fund to ensure that our beloved Orchestra will forever be making beautiful music. Each donor of one hundred dollars or more, cumulative, will be invited to a private rehearsal of the Orchestra during the following year. The enrollment is October 1 to October 1, and those eligible from this past year will be invited to a splendid rehearsal on December 8, The program will be "The Hollywood Sound" as part of the celebration of the Getty-initiated "Pacific Standard Time, honoring the growth of the Arts in Los Angeles. The Conductor will be Thomas Wilkins, Music Director of Omaha Symphony, and also Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. This past Endowment year 268 Affiliate donors have contributed $41,508.00, all of which goes directly to the Philharmonic Endowment Fund. All gifts are tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt. The honoree, or family, will receive a card from the Phil in recognition. Please remember this is a lovely way to thank, honor, congratulate or condole. Vickie Pushee, Affiliate Endowment Coordinator VOLUNTEER FOR TOYOTA SYMPHONIES FOR YOUTH (TSFY) Calling All Volunteers -- Toyota Symphonies for Youth Kicks off Season The Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert series kicked off its new season on November 5th with Mendelssohn s Mystical Landscapes. Concertgoers were treated to an all Mendelssohn program that explored the use of music as a descriptor of the natural world. All Affiliates are invited to volunteer to lend a hand at the preconcert activities such as music, dance, theater/storytelling and MUSIC MOBILE MOBILIZES arts & crafts. Each concert requires about 35 volunteers, and there are openings for the remaining six performances: January 21 and 28, 2012, Mahler s World March 3 and 10, Holst s The Planets April 14 and 21, Minimalist Jukebox All concerts are on Saturday mornings and volunteers are provided with free parking at Walt Disney Concert Hall and a ticket The Music Mobile program is underway this year under the continued leadership of Margo Penny and Shirley Farley. Perhaps the best way to demonstrate the children s excitement about working with the instruments is with photos! to the concert if requested in advance. 8 ENCORE Encore members began the year in grand style by holding their first general meeting at the downtown Millennium Biltmore Hotel on October 17. The luxurious setting provided the perfect ambiance for enjoying the many talents of classical/contemporary guitarist Kevin Nash. Kevin played a varied program of music from Bach and Mudarra to Satie and Villa- Lobos, ending with his arrangement of Michael Giacchino s film music for Disney s A Married Life. President Joan Callanan announced the exciting schedule of up-coming activities, including the annual Holiday Tea to be held December 13. BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL (B&P) COMMITTEE Conductor Nicolas McGegan was the very special luncheon speaker for our first meeting, held at the Hollywood Bowl. He discussed the intricacies of the conducting profession in great depth yet with an equally superb sense of humor. We re looking forward to his December performance of Handel s Messiah at WDCH, featuring his own Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra from Berkeley. At our October 13th meeting we enjoyed Principal Second Violinist Lyndon Johnston Taylor, recently back from his long stay as Assistant Concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. On November 10th, our special guest speaker will be longtime audience favorite, LA Philharmonic Violinist, Guido Lamell. We begin 2012 with January s luncheon speaker, composer David Lefkowitz, whose compositions have been played internationally. The luncheon will be both a learning experience for us and a chance to meet David on a one-to -one basis. On February 9th, renowned cellist Ralph Kirshbaum will be our luncheon guest at Kendall s and he no doubt will be able to give us some insights on his forthcoming WDCH concert performance of Dvorak s Cello Concert with the LA Philharmonic. Our long-range plans include a fundraising soiree next spring that features a quartet of Philharmonic musicians, First Violinist Camille Avellano, Second Violinist Jin- Shan Dai, Violist Dana Hansen, and Cellist Barry Gold. All net proceeds from our events benefit the Philharmonic s Music Library. We invite all affiliates to attend our events at special reduced rate! 9 INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE The International Committee Board met to discuss its future in these difficult times. The general consensus was that we will double our efforts and change some strategies if we are to continue to hold the Annual International Benefit Ball as our main fundraiser and maintain the elegant pageantry for which it has become famous. Co-Chairs Francoise Balabanian and Mirella Ventress strongly requested that the Ball Committee include all past presidents, most of whom have been Ball Chairs themselves. To start the year with a "bang" the venue for the first General meeting was changed to an evening event to include spouses who work in the daytime. It will be held in Westwood at the Italian Culture Institute, perfect for introducing the newly arrived Consul General of (l to r) Mirella Ventress, Francoise Balabanian (Ball co-chairs), President Kay Sidhu. Italy, Giuseppe Perrone. Award-winning Pianist Adriano Aponte To provide the utmost excitement for the evening, we invited young Italian award-winning pianist Adriano Aponte who, in 2009 and 2010, received the Los Angeles Music Awards as Instrumental Artist of the Year at Paramount Studios. He will play two of his awardwinning compositions and deliver President Kay Sidhu, in white, surrounded by her court. Page 9 a program called "Music from Hollywood". This premiere program will be enhanced by a visual background in the Sala Rossellini. A champagne dinner reception, prepared and served by Pastina Trattoria, will follow. May this be the beginning step, which will lead to a very successful and lucrative International Benefit Ball. COMMITTEE OF PROFESSONAL WOMEN (COPW) COPW IS BUSY! Members of COPW enjoyed a three day weekend in San Luis Obispo at the Mozaic music festival held in July. Concerts in historic and scenic venues were a highlight. Meals were a pleasure in the charming restaurants of downtown SLO. Two members from the Peninsula chapter joined COPW and the cross affiliate committee participation added to the fun of the outing. On October 1, COPW attended a YOLA rehearsal to see the young people learning orchestral playing techniques. Afterwards there was a luncheon at First and Hope. COPW has a review of its mission and membership requirements underway now. The board plans to recommend some positive changes at its general membership meeting January 29. This meeting will be held at a tea at the Douglas home followed by a concert in Santa Monica by the New Valley Symphony. Stephanie Klopfleisch, COPW These signature out-of-town events are popular with COPW members and planning is underway to add a new event in Santa Barbara and possibly San Diego for the coming year. 10 Page 10 TEENY TIDBITS Award for Innovative Programming. For the third consecutive year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has won the Morton Gould Award for Innovative Programming. The awards, conferred since 1947, recognize orchestras that challenge the audience, build the repertoire and increase interest in the music of our time. New CD Look for it! Deutsche Grammophon has released a recording of the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Esa-Pekka Salonen in a program of Hindemith and Wagner. The program, which marked Salonen s first as Conductor Laureate, was recorded live in Walt Disney Concert Hall in November The great violinist Mischa Elman was attending the Oct. 27, 1917 Carnegie Hall debut of 17-year-old fellow violinist, Jascha Heifetz. When Elman remarked to his pianist friend, Leopold Godowsky, "It's hot in here." Godowsky responded: "Not for pianists." PENINSULA COMMITTEE A Vibrant Future -- Entering our 60th Year The Peninsula Committee is entering its 60th year, confident of a vibrant future, thanks to their active and growing membership. In keeping with the mission, they have developed a music culture on the Peninsula that sustains seasoned performers and nurtures young musicians. Their Music Promenade fundraiser in October offered a wide reach to the community, with 3 events attended by over 750 people. The main event offered selections for every musical taste, including performances by six teen jazz bands and a high-school string quartet. A Music Mobile display rounded out the Committee s emphasis on youth programs. Summer brought a focus on revitalizing the membership. PCLAP honored its nine new members at a starlight dinner, and a group of founding fathers launched its first men s auxiliary to fully integrate their work into the mainstream. The Committee fielded an Interest Finder survey where active members could raise their hands for favorite jobs. The results are being used to leverage the strengths of the members and prepare for a great year in and for the next 60! 11 Page 11 LONG BEACH AUXILIARY The Long Beach Auxiliary hosted its annual Summer Interlude featuring pianist Junko Ueno Garrett and book reviews with Marcia Gordon at the home of Barbara Hillman. Members enjoyed casual summer nights at the Hollywood Bowl and dressed in their finest formal attire for the festive opening night Gala of the LA Phil. Cellist Ruslan Biryukov delighted members and guests at the Fall Musicale in the Long Beach Yacht Club. Five members attended the Affiliates Leadership Workshop at the Hollywood Bowl Volunteer Cottage; member Arlyss Burkett was the workshop leader and President Carole McCormac was a group leader. One of the highlights of the upcoming program year will be LA Phil Associate Principal Trombone, James Miller, performing in concert April 28, 2012 at Cal Heights United Methodist Church, Long Beach at the Long Beach Auxiliary s fundraiser benefiting the Los Angeles Philharmonic. LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC COMMITTEE The Los Angeles Philharmonic Committee got off to a great start this September at their first General meeting of the year at the lovely home of Sylvie Ollivier. After an informative business meeting, members enjoyed an entertaining and beautiful musical program of Gershwin performed by Alan Chapman, Karen Benjamin, Cedric Berry and pianist Victoria Kirsch. A tasty lunch was then served on the patio. Members were excited to get back together after the summer off. October brought the group to the Jonathan Beach Club on a fantastic summer-like day for the next General meeting. The business meeting, the amazing talented UCLA Camarades String Quartet, and the lunch served on the patio of the Penthouse was a delight for all attending. The Committee is now looking forward to their annual November Letter Writing event, one of the major fund raisers of the year. 12 Page 12 SOUTHWEST HEIGHTS COMMITTEE A great, great time was had by all who attended the Andre Watts program at the Hollywood Bowl, August 23rd. The program was fabulous, as usual, but just not long enough. Watts only played one composition, which was excellent, but we were very anxious to hear more, and more! Prior to the performance, the Southwest Heights Committee enjoyed a wonderful pot-luck dinner furnished by the members, served in the Volunteer Cottage. Then we were escorted to our seats to enjoy the great music. The weather, too, was great, crisp, and brisk. We anxiously look forward to our next outing under the LA stars. With our new president, Leila Otey, everyone is looking forward to service to the community as well as having a little fun. Financial assistance to elementary and middle school music programs will continue and are needed more than ever in the current economic climate. The annual Christmas Luncheon is scheduled for December 12 with Philharmonic Associate Principal Trombonist, James Miller, as our guest musician. Committee members and, hopefully, Glendale third graders, look forward to January and a visit from the Music Mobile. All in all, it looks like a fine year! 13 Page 13 AFFILIATES AT LARGE In mid-june members of the were honored to assist with a variety of functions for the Beethoven9 for Japan. The classical concert was in support of relief efforts in the earthquake and tsunami stricken areas of Japan. The performance in the Walt Disney Concert Hall included volunteer musicians and choral singers conducted by Philharmonic violinist Guido Lamell. The A@L volunteers guided guests, staffed the will-call desk and helped with the food service backstage. They also had the opportunity to enjoy the concert. Later in summer, the Affiliates At Large and guests enjoyed a lovely Dinner and Concert Evening at the Hollywood Bowl. Yuga Wang was the piano soloist. At the LA Phil s Opening Gala evening, some members started the evening with a pre-party in the loft of member Raulee Marcus in a landmark Art Deco building. Later, members enjoyed a lovely postconcert dinner in Founders Room. The A@L look forward to assisting with the Toyota Symphonies For Youth season and other LA Phil activities. The Valley CommitteeS came together for a September "Welcome Back!" Garden Party at the home of member Judy Cohn. The tradition began when the Valley Committee and the Valley Juniors merged two years ago and became The Valley CommitteeS. We enjoyed getting acquainted over a fall luncheon. (l-r) Margie Baker, Glenda Burnett, President Barbara Camilleri, Jan Agens, Sue Clauss, Judith Butler The first Valley CommitteeS fundraiser will be in December: a salon at the home of Judi Butler presenting Los Angeles Philharmonic's violinists Stacy Wetzel and Elizabeth Baker. Fran Ulrich, Valley CommitteeS President Barbara Camilleri Helen Elman, whose late husband, Mischa, played in Carnegie Hall from 1908 until 1967, recounted how Elman came home chuckling one day, after a rehearsal. He said he had encountered tourists on the street who, seeing his violin case, asked him, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" He told his wife that an impish impulse came over him. He answered: "Practice," and walked on.

14 Page 14 Philharmonic Friends Campaign Philharmonic Friends celebrated the culmination of a successful campaign at an awards luncheon at the top of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on October 4. Margaret Lulejian, Coordinator, welcomed all and introduced past Affiliate Chair Arlyss Burkett and present Affiliate Chair Aida Gaona, who both congratulated all the committees for a very successful year. A grand total of $196, was raised from 594 gifts. The three top fund raisers were, Foothill, first in dollars and gifts overall; Santa Monica-Westside, second in dollars and gifts overall; Peninsula, third in dollars overall and most improved. Committees recognized for attaining 100% over their goal were, Business and Professional, COPW, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Long Beach, SouthWest Heights, Speakers Bureau, Valley and Women s. The eleven committees were each awarded a case of wine. Melanie Sanguinet, Manager of Volunteer Activities, explained the letter writing procedure for the Philharmonic Friends Campaign starting October 1. Margaret thanked Melanie Sanguinet and Sharleen Eusebio for their help, especially for tabulating all of the dollars collected every month. She also encouraged all the committees to again work at surpassing their goals. Following the Awards program, the Colburn Jazz Ensemble under the directorship of faculty member Lee Secard entertained the sixty attendees. Mr. Secard, composer, performer and educator, gave a brief history of jazz and the pieces that were being performed by the students. A delicious lunch by Patina followed the wonderful jazz music. Flamenco, in all its glory, will be presented in dance and music by Mojacár Flamenco at the Fifth Floor of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Sunday afternoon 1:30 PM November 13th for all Affiliate members and their guests. Patina Catering will not only serve Spanish inspired appetizers and sangria but will also provide a special wooden floor for the dances. Contemporary Flamenco, rooted in the culture of Andalucia, is the specialty that will be presented. Both the guitarist, Esteban, and dancer, Katerina, studied Flamenco in Spain and have received Los Angeles Treasures awards of recognition of their work as Flamenco teachers. They will be joined by dancer Rudy Ornelas. Price is $45 for everything.
