9 (Enhancement Point 2) Characteristics of Beethoven s musical works Different characteristics can be found between Beethoven s early and late works. His early works were composed under the influence of Classical composers, thus, reflecting classical style. Whilst his later works reflect plenty of his own personal style which are quite different from his early works. 2. Listen to Beethoven s early work, Symphony No. 1, 1 st movement and his latter works, Symphony No. 5, 1 st movement, then describe their dynamics, tempo and mood. (a) Title of the work: Symphony No. 1, 1 st movement Composer: Beethoven Dynamics: Music starts softly, then becomes loud, and then repeats these dynamics again. Dynamics change gently, not much contracts. Tempo change: Light and lively with no obvious change in tempo. Mood: Lively and with a feeling of the nature. (b) Title of the work: Symphony No. 5, 1 st movement Composer: Beethoven Dynamics: Music starts loudly, then becomes soft. Gradually, the music becomes very lou again. Dynamics change abruptly and obviously. Tempo change: Some tempo changes found in the form of accelerando, especially in places of short notes. Mood: Exciting and filled with tensions.

This type of composition has a very clear theme and follows with a various changes in the melody or tonality according to the main theme. Other ways of variation can be altering the accompaniment, texture or dynamics. Example of Variation: Mozart: 12 Variations: Ah, vous dirai-je, maman KV Analyse the following forms of variation by Mozart. Main Theme: This main theme has a single line accompaniment and a simple melody.

15 (a) Variation 1 Variation 1 has inserted (Repeated / Step) notes to the main theme. The beginning part of the accompaniment is (the same as / different to ) the main theme, while the rhythm of the later part is changed. (b) Variation 2 In variation 2, the melody has (much / not much) changes in the melody. While the accompaniment consists of (semiquaver / quaver / crotchet) notes in similar rhythmic patterns.
