Kaitlyn Lusk Kaitlyn Lusk has quickly gained national acclaim and won the hearts of audiences everywhere with her incredible voice and captivating presence. Since making her major-orchestral singing debut with the Baltimore Symphony in 2003 at the age of 14, she has been sought-after for solo appearances with many of the nation s leading orchestras. Show-stopping performances at the New Years Eve showcase with the Boston Pops led by Keith Lockhart and a follow-up engagement with the premier pops orchestra featuring her refreshing renditions of classic MGM songs made famous by the young Judy Garland garnered her standing ovations from the sold out concerts. In her already impressive career she has demonstrated extraordinary versatility and musical depth. Since the fall of 2004, Kaitlyn has been the featured vocal soloist in Howard Shore s Lord of the Rings Symphony. She has performed this role with over twenty-five orchestras in the United States and Canada from the Philadelphia Orchestra to the San Francisco Symphony, and from the Houston Symphony to the Minnesota Orchestra. She has performed with world-class conductors including Keith Lockhart, Alexander Mickelthwate, Allaistar Willis, Stuart Malina, Nicolas Palmer, Markus Huber and in January 2007, Kaitlyn performed with Maestro John Mauceri and the legendary Gewandhaus Orchestra in her European debut in Leipzig. With the success of her debut and her return to Vienna last April, she is beginning to captivate audiences not only in America, but all across the world. Last summer, as part of an encore performance of the Lord of the Rings Symphony with the world famous Cleveland Orchestra, she will be once again performing with Howard Shore, who in 2005 invited Kaitlyn performed the academy award winning song Into The West as part of the Grammy Honors of Howard Shore in New York City. In addition to her live performances, Kaitlyn s first studio album, No Looking Back, features some of the finest musicians and songwriters in the industry today. The project was produced by the award-winning composer and arranger, Kim Scharnberg, whose initial response to Kaitlyn s voice reflects the feelings of anyone lucky enough to hear her sing: I heard Kaitlyn s demo, says Scharnberg; I had to meet her. I had to hear her sing. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has become the celebrated hub of Winnipeg s rich cultural life and has gained international recognition for its New Music Festival. The WSO performs to over 100,000 audience members each year and more than 80 concerts from September to May consisting of four major series: Including Masterworks (classical repertoire), Musically Speaking (e-media take on live symphonic music), WSO Pops (Broadway show tunes and popular orchestral pieces), Sundays with the Family (concerts geared for kids 12 and under) and a variety of Add-On Performances throughout the season. New this year are the Indigenous Festival and Symphony Summers. The WSO also offers a concert season for Brandon, Manitoba featuring repertoire from the Masterworks series. The WSO continues to provide the musical foundation for other arts groups in the province such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Manitoba Opera and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. In addition, WSO musicians are hired for many productions and concerts that come to Winnipeg each year. The orchestra tours rural Manitoba annually during the holiday season in the Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Holiday Express Tour visiting areas like Virden, Portage la Prairie, Neepawa, Winkler and Morden. The WSO believes in the importance of providing education and outreach programs to all Manitobans. From nursery school through university, our education programs reach more than 25,000 students annually. Striving to promote symphonic music, the WSO also partners with local organizations and develops community initiatives. Choir The Lord of the Rings chorus is comprised of some of Manitoba s finest singers from various choral organizations, educational institutions, and talented individuals. From the young to the very experienced, with the assistance of their music directors, all have brought their special talent together under the direction of Zane Zalis in the preparation of the Lord of the Rings score. Zane Zalis is an internationally recognized composer, educator and music director. The world premiere of Zane Zalis I BELIEVE, documenting the Holocaust experience, will be performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra with chorus and soloists on March 7, 2009 at the Centennial Concert Hall. Currently Zane is the Artistic Director of the Murau Summer Music Festival in Austria. Zane is pleased to be part of the North American premiere of this special Lord of the Rings event. Whether it is the interpretations of her original songs, music of the young Judy Garland or the epic score to the Lord Of The Rings, Kaitlyn always delivers the same youthful exuberance matched with poise beyond her years. To me what makes a great singer is how well they express the meaning of a song to those who are listening, Kaitlyn states. When I sing, I search inside myself to find my feelings and thoughts, expressing every lyric, and tinting every phrase with my own emotions. Fran Walsh, Lyricist In 2004, Fran Walsh was awarded Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, and Best Picture for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. For her work co-writing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Walsh was nominated for an Oscar, a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award and Writers Guild of America Screen Award, and (along with Peter Jackson, Barrie Osborne and Tim Sanders) won the AFI Film Award. Walsh first garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay for the feature Heavenly Creatures, which she co-wrote with her collaborator Peter Jackson. Walsh, who has a background in music, began her writing career soon after leaving Victoria University where she majored in English Literature. Philippa Boyens, Writer Since being named by Variety in their list of Ten Writers to Watch in 2000, Philippa Boyens, who made her debut as a screenwriter with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and was previously nominated for an Oscar, a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award and a Writers Guild of America Award, among others. Boyens worked in theatre as a playwright, teacher, producer and editor. Boyens moved to film via a stint as Director of the New Zealand Writers Guild. Her love of J.R.R. Tolkien s work brought her to this project, having been a fan since she was eleven years old. Peter Jackson, Director Jackson has made cinema history in making The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, comprising nine hours of a continuous cinema that can be enjoyed by audiences worldwide. The films have become a phenomenon cross culturally around the world, not only embracing the respect of established Tolkien fans and scholars, but introducing young audience to Tolkien s classic novels. He was awarded three Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
