The Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia hosted its first Flute Fair Day on Saturday April 13 th. The event took place at the Stage One Performing Arts Complex of Delaware County. Guest artist Susan Milan was featured in both recital and a master class. Flute society members and recent competition winners of the John and Helen Tomasone Memorial Young Artist Competition performed for Ms. Milan. Workshops were presented in the Alexander Technique, Baroque Flute, Audition Tips and Tricks and Holistic Practice. In addition to these workshops flute choir reading sessions took place at both the adult and student levels. Vendors were on site from the Windworks Studios of Philadelphia, Brannen Brothers Flutemakers Inc, Flute World, Calliope Music, Burkart Flutes and Piccolos, Weissman Music and a representative was present from the new ipad app Sight Reader. The entire day was sponsored in part by The Flute Pro Shop. The day ended with an extraordinary performance by the winners of our first Collegiate Young Artist Competition. Special thanks to Renae Block, Colleen Law and the entire flute fair for committee for organizing such a great day! - Tom Meany Know of any unused instruments just lying around? Musicopia a Philadelphia-based, non-profit music education organization is looking for new or gently used instruments for their Gift of Music Program. Musicopia s Gift of Music program collects, repairs, and places donated instruments in schools with students who are eager to play, but cannot afford an instrument. Through this statewide initiative, spearheaded by Musicopia for the Philadelphia region, they have collected over 1000 instruments for schools in need. With the public s help, they hold instrument donation drives and benefit concerts throughout the year, enabling them to give the Gift of Music to children who would love to play an instrument but do not have resources to buy or rent the needed equipment. For more information, visit Musicopia s website at If you have an instrument to donate, please contact Tom Meany directly to arrange a pick up: AMEANFLT@voicenet.com
