INterview THE TWELVES by Matteo Quinzi In the last years several interesting indie artist came out from Brazil, conquering the international audience and critic, like Gui Boratto or CSS.

Do you have some brazilian underground artist, producer or band that you really appreciate at the moment? Tell us more about your local music scene.

Maybe even mainland Europe for the more dance oriented stuff. But for usi t is great to have these affiliations with people like Gui Boratto, DJ Marky, MixHell and these people.

5 INterview THE TWELVES by Matteo Quinzi In the last years several interesting indie artist came out from Brazil, conquering the international audience and critic, like Gui Boratto or CSS. What do you think about it? Is it a good period to be an artist in Brazil? Or, for your career, it would be better to change headquarter? Do you have some brazilian underground artist, producer or band that you really appreciate at the moment? Tell us more about your local music scene... We think it is great that Brazil is now being recognised as a genuine world music nation. For so many years it has always been about the UK and USA for pioneering music. Maybe even mainland Europe for the more dance oriented stuff. But for usi t is great to have these affiliations with people like Gui Boratto, DJ Marky, MixHell and these people. We have considered relocating, but only because of travel logistics for touring and general business opportunities that exist in Europe; never because we felt any pressure from the other acts in Brazil. In terms of the local music, the majority is focused on the House, Techno and Trance genres, but there are groups like DATABASE who are doing really well and have got a great sound. You re considered one of hottest remixers of the last seasons, worldwide. Most of your remixes became istant classics, starting from Boyz by M.I.A., dated in 2007, to Something Good Can Work by Two Door Cinema Club, released some month ago. Which is your secret and your first rule in the art of remix? The first and only rule is to have a great vocal. We work around the vocals of the tracks we remix as we feel that is where the majority of the song structure and melody comes from. Then all we have to do is build a track around the vocal in our own style. We like to leave the vocal untouched so that the time signature is the same and the remix doesn t stray too far away from the original. What about your set? Is it part live, with synth or keyboard, and part with laptop and/or cds, or what? Do you include in the set-list your original tracks, remixes and tracks by other artist? Is it basically prepared in advance or in real time with the feeling of the audience?this is your first time in Rome, so we are very curious about your performance... We play using loops and samples in Ableton and trigger them with our MIDI keyboards. From time to time we might rent a bass guitar for a show to give it that little bit extra, but all of our music is made on the stage and we would never prepare something in advance. You never know how a crowd will react and we feel that we have more control over the audience and the atmosphere when we play in real time. In terms of what we play, it s whatever is hot at the time. Sometimes we use our own tracks, but sometimes it isn t quite right for the mood of the club. Finally last year, you have released your first ep with original tracks. Tell us more about it (gestation, sounds, your impressions about the final result and about the response of the audience and the critic). When and how do you enter in contact with Rob Sutcliffe and his Eye Industries, the english label that has released your ep? And how long we will have to wait for your debut album? Unfortunately there was a delay in releasing the EP with Eye Industries and we have not had a chance to release the original material. We are however working on new music at the moment with a view to getting something out this year. 1 / 7 1 / 8

Xinobi: Moullinex is, basically, a really hard working kid. I really envy that on him. That s something that also reflects on his music carachteristics: Super detailed composition with idiosyncratic melodies and arrangments. As a defect, I would say he should take better care of his Lungs Moullinex: Xinobi is a kid living in an adult body. He s wise in what s important to be wise in, and unwise in all the things you should be unwise at. And of course that affects the way his music sounds. Punk, but polished enough; Experienced, but naive. I can t point a defect, this guy has frankly saved my life too many times for me to bitch about anything. Well, maybe his feet. Talk us more about your label/collective DiscoTexas... When and how this adventure started? By what criterion you select artists who end up in your family? Which are the upcoming releases that you have planned for DiscoTexas? DiscoTexas Discotexas started something like 4 years ago. The major criteria for what we release is the We like it one. Also, we call a meeting with the artists that sent us a demo and we are up to sign so we can check if they have the same idiot humour pose we do have. That s quite essential. If they fail at it, they can make the better music in the world, they won t fit the label. Your back to back dj-set is now one of the most appreciated and popular worldwide. Without making unnecessary comparisons with the classic Villalobos-Luciano s act, which are, in your opinion, the key ingredients to make a set musically enjoyable and valuable? Thanks! The major key is demonstrating that you, the dj, are enjoying the songs you are playing. If you don t like, no one will. We ve been doing this for a while now, but even since the very beginning our flow matched quite well, so it just came naturally for us to keep doing it. We never have even a broad idea of the sets we re gonna do You are two of the most important ambassadors of the electronic/dance scene from Portugal. Please explain us if and how your local scene is grown and evolved in the last decade... And suggest us which are the next big things or newcommer talents from your country? Honestly It got so chaotic nowadays. Old House and Techno dinassauors did fade away to the fog or are doing really crappy pop-house-tunes. Younger kids are trying to figure out their way out of Skrillex s lovers audience. And then we have fabulous people like Social Disco Club, Tiago Miranda, Mirror People, Photonz, Cavaliers of Fun, Da Chick, Bitsound, SAiR Not all of them are newcomers, but those are the ones we can remember now. Please reveal us the story behind the choice of your monikers... Both are certainly very curious! Xinobi: It used to be a nickname for chat rooms on the Internets. Then it was picked without thinking that much to creat an (at that time) unfocused artist myspace account. But as it got serious I kept it. Yes it s kind of related to the arcade game Shinobi, as it was my all time favourite game. That one and Out Run were the only ones I could make it to the end with only one coin. Moullinex: long story short: A remix had to be delivered and we didn t have a name. So what s around us in the kitchen? Moulinex? French. Electronics. Sounds good. That s what you do when you re young and plain stupid. x Moullinex: Tutte le tue ultime releases sono uscite per Gomma Records, incluso il recente All of your recent releases have been for Gomma Records, including the recent single Sunflare. Why this choice? Have you made an exclusive contract with them or what? This is also why did you move to Munich? The Gomma gang are awesome people. That s the main thing that took me to sign with them. Plus, they have an outstanding release history, and they re not exactly riding the newest trendin clubland, but they keep it edgy. Moving to Munich was prior and unrelated: I came there to pursue a research project on Brain-Computer Interaction I was working on. That is on hold now, but I plan to get into it again one day. x Xinobi: Which are your top 5 remixed tracks at the moment? 1) Kamp! Cairo Rmx Moullinex: It reminds me the feel of his remix for Cut Copy altough this one has a funky bass and the other was more about the melody. 2) Is Tropical The Greeks Rmx Moonlight Matters: Melody freaks! 3) Slice & Soda Year Of The Dragon Rmx Villa: Those hypnotic violins always makes the people happy. 4) Tyson After You re Gone by Dimitri From Paris: Ultimate modern Disco with all the classic vibes. 5) Il remix che ho fatto per Saarid Future Lately: I normally don t get addicted to music I make, and this one I can listen on daily basis. 1 / 13 1 / 14
