5 INterview JACQUES RENAULT by Matteo Quinzi analog-only producers / groups that definitely make people rethink dance music aesthetics. I played with Steve Summers last week and he s an example of what I m talking about. Now you re considered one of the most valuable and requested dj in the NYC scene. Please talk us about your first steps in music business : It was easy to find the right way? Tell us some curious or funny anecdote if you remember... Ah the music business is difficult to read these days, I will say the biggest change for myself was deciding to do music full time. There really is no right way to do it, most of it is all about finding balance in what you need to do with what you want to do.. In the past you ve studied a classical instrument like the viola. What do you remember about that experience and if and how it helped you, both technically and in terms of sensitivity, in your next incarnations of DJ and producer? Which are your main musical reference points, in general? Growing up playing classical music was my gateway to Jazz, Punk etc. My parents encouraged me to pick up multiple instruments and explore different directions I ve always been more of a player than a producer. I like to take bits and riffs from multiple genres. From your bio indicates that you have had a post-punk past. But listening your sets you seem more a soul-funky-disco guy ;-). Are you still tied to that world and sounds? You still listen and feel comfortable (connected) to rock? If not, why? If yes, which are your favorite rock band/artist at the moment I still like all the stuff I listened to growing up, it definitely has a presence in my sound today. I don t follow so many bands as i used to but there can still appreciate the few that stand out. Talk us about the contemporary indie-electronic-dance scene in NYC. The DFA (label and sounds aesthetics) is still leading the way? Which are the most interesting new acts (producer, band, label)? I still think labels like DFA play an important role in current dance music. I m seeing more Tell us about your productions: what about your side-project Runaway and the label On The Prowl, both founded with your friend Marcos Cabral? How these projects started? And which are your releases for the next future (solo, side-project, label or remix)? Marcos and I were friends for a few years and then started working together when I bought Ableton Live. I had switched from Pro Tools and I knew he was experienced having a few releases out. The first few tunes became our first few records and we ve been working together ever since. The label started because we wanted our own output and brand for the music we were making. We have a new Andy Ash 2 coming out next month with a remix from Deep Space Orchestra. The Runaway remix of Lauer is out soon as well on Running Back. You re a great remixer too. Which is your first rule, the most important thing, when you are preparing a remix? Thanks, I like to listen to the tune and try to keep some sort of theme with the original tune. I tend to work on the percussion and the bassline first, bouncing off the original leads/vocals. Then I adapt the other original parts from there.. Reveal us the top 5 albums from the past (classics or underground gems) and the top 5 contemporary (last 5 years) that cannot miss in the bag of a DJ, in your opinion... And please tell us the reason for these choices, including personal memories, if any... I always feel like I ll miss something if there is a list so I ll choose of each A classic that I was just speaking about recently is Jackie Moore s This Time Baby. It is constantly in and out of my bag, as like any classic you need to sometimes take a break from it, only to appreciate it more a few months later. A more contemporary track I always like to hear is Storm Queen s It Goes On. Morgan Geist was a bit skeptical about the follow up single after Look Right Through, but he really came through with this one. Always brings a smile to my face. / 7 / 8

7 INterview MERCURY by Matteo Quinzi Peading your biography, the irony seems to be one of the key components of your personality. So please introduce your partner eachother, describing the human and musical characteristics you prefer; and of course the most glaring defect... Simon: Mel can be very enthusiastic but sometimes also mercurial. On the other hand he can be very determined once he s on a path he feels is good. He is a mystery to me and I think also to himself. But I like to work and travel with him it s always fun and we share the same sense of humour. Mel: Simon has a deadpan humour and he is a very interested and open-minded guy. Tell him something about the bird migration in Tanzania he will gratefully listen and ask you questions about it. In the studio he s very pedantic he would try everything out before going for something. He s sometimes unwilling to take a risk. Talk us about your sources of inspiration: the sounds/albums/artists that have bewitched you so much that (you) become producers and djs... Simon: The list is endless and the spectrum goes from classic music to avantgarde most inspiration comes from different fields beyond music. But if you really want to hear some names: Prince has been a huge inspiration for me. Also Count Basie. He was a dancefloor filler during the 40s he brought dance music, at the time it was swing, to the masses. In this sense he was the prototype of a techno DJ. Another source of inspiration is Eric Satie I like how he uses pauses/breaks in his compositions. Rivelateci il vostro vecchio maestro e la nuova promessa preferiti in ambito dance ed elettronico... Mel: Theo Parrish / Axel Boman. On the title-track of your last Ep Candlelight there s a featuring of Robert Owens, one of the greatest voices in house music. How do you enter in contact with him? Have you met him face to face? What were your first impressions about him, both from a human point of view that artistic / professional? After him, there is another voice with which you would like to collaborate? Mel: We played our demos to the guys at Gomma and told them that we were looking for a vocalist for the Candlelight instrumental. They put us in touch with Robert. He liked the track and a few weeks after he sent us his vocals. We finally met him last December in Bern. He came over to shoot the promotion video with us and we played together at Club Bonsoir. He is a very humble and intelligent man. He does not at all insist upon being a legend he actually does not like it to be seen as one. He wants to go on and develop himself further as a human and as an artist. He was sick before he came to Bern but still worked with us on the video for a whole day what showed us that he is a very professional guy too. Other vocalists? Hmm Maybe Luther Vandross if we could bring him back to life. He was an amazing soul singer. All of your recent releases have been for Gomma Records. Why this choice? Have you made an exclusive contract with them or what? Are you planning any new releases (original, edit or remix) for the next months? Simon: Yes, we signed a long-term contract with Gomma. But we have a mutual agreement that we can release on other labels from time to time. Gomma is an open-minded label and they respect us as artists. Most labels have a certain, sometimes even strict sound identity. Their catalogue is like a product line. Gomma is still driven by emotions. The label stands for real music and artistry and that s what we like about Gomma. Please reveal us your Top 3 things/reasons should be proud to be a Swiss - not only about music, obviously... Simon: Within 3 hours time I can reach a ski slope, a French bistrot or an Italian market.. 2 Our rivers are so clean that you can swim in it. In our hometown Bern we have the river Aare the best river to swim in. 3 - Switzerland is an island of felicity in a world that is shook by crisis as a nation/country we are still rich and hence privileged. It s not something that we are proud of. But we are grateful to live in Switzerland in these times! / 3 / 4
