2 WELCOME FAILTE Welcome to a new year of Skye Events for All. Over the course of 2017, SEALL will be bringing some of the country s leading performing artists to venues in the south of Skye. Our Spring brochure is packed with a diverse range of events for adults and children to enjoy. You will find something for everyone and, if you plan to come to several events, take advantage of our membership programme and save money on multiple tickets. You will find all the details at the back of the programme. In the meantime, we welcome back our wonderful supporters and extend a warm greeting to new faces and visitors. Duncan MacInnes, Director, SEALL VENUES SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG TDC MAIN HALL: The main venue of Talla Dhonaidh Chaimbeul is a quality performance space with raked seating for up to 150 people. Situated within the main college campus between the road and the sea. AN TALLA MÒR: The oldest part of SMO is an intimate space for music and cèilidhs in a converted 19th century barn. It can be found above the road at the Tarskavaig road junction. SEALL also uses other venues in south Skye, including An Crùbh and Tarskavaig Hall. There is a bar at events. 3 WHO WE ARE Established in 1991, award-winning SEALL Skye Events for All is one of the liveliest community-led performing arts events promotion groups in the UK. Operating from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, in Sleat, Isle of Skye, SEALL provides a diverse and quality programme of 80 performing arts events to locals and visitors. FÈIS AN EILEIN THE SKYE FESTIVAL July and August TAKING place in venues mostly in Sleat over two months in the summer, The Skye Festival - Fèis an Eilein - is a celebration of island culture and performing arts. With a strong focus on Scottish traditional music, the programme includes visiting jazz, innovative theatre, world music and a circus. SKYE SWING JAZZ FESTIVAL FOTS Records and SEALL present three days of spectacular music, fun and dancing at the end of October each year. 4 Wednesday 8 March, 7.30pm Diciadain 8 Am Màrt, 7.30f The Siobhan Miller Trio The Strata Tour 2017 Two-time winner of Scots Singer of the Year, Siobhan Miller is widely regarded as one of the foremost vocalists in Scotland. Her debut solo album, Flight of Time was nominated for album of the year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2015 and she is a recipient of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. The concert opens with a set from the Traditional Music dept of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The finest young interpreter of Scots traditional song. Scotland on Sunday One of the finest young voices on the Scottish folk scene. The Scotsman Adults 14, Members 12, Students/Young Persons 7, Under 10s and Seasons Free Thursday 16 March, 7.30pm Diardaoin 16 Am Màrt, 7.30f Kathryn Joseph Contemporary concert organised in partnership with the Touring Network s Get In scheme for young promoters Winner of the 2015 SAY Awards for her highlyacclaimed album Bones You Have Thrown Me, And Blood I ve Spilled, Aberdeen singer-songwriter Kathryn Joseph has been described as Prodigiously talented and criminally underrated. Kathryn is one of Scotland s best-kept secrets. Her voice possesses the other-worldly quality comparable to Ms Newsom and Björk; but she is by no means of an ilk. Opportunities to see such talented vocalists perform don t come around often. Metro With an opening set from The Northenders, young talent from Skye. 5 Mallory Beyond Everest Lunchtime theatre from a Highland actor A real Highland collaboration, this terrific one man play is written by locally-based John Burns, directed by talented Eden Court staff members Catherine MacNeil and Melissa MacDonald with music by renowned Highland musician Bob Pegg. Saturday 18 March, 1pm Disathairne 18 Am Màrt, 1f On 8 June 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine vanished into the mist on their final push toward the unconquered summit of Everest. They were never seen alive again. First performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, the play provides a fascinating insight into the mind of a man torn between his love for his wife and his relentless desire to be the first man to reach the highest point on earth. This is a human story told with humour and passion. The play includes original film footage of the 1924 Everest Expedition. Hot pies and drinks will be on sale. Adults 10, Members 8, Students/Young Persons 5, Seasons Free Thursday 23 March, 7.30pm Diardaoin 23 Am Màrt, 7.30f Plan B Dance Citizen Movement with music and song Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC main hall Plan B is one of Scotland s leading dance companies, based in Ross-shire. Created by Glasgow-based Irish-born choreographer Chrissie Ardill and composer Mariam Rezaei, Citizen is a darkly humorous look at how we bring our identity with us wherever we go. exploration of global migration and what happens when we arrive in new destinations. People leave places, sometimes by choice, sometimes because they have to. Where do they go? How do they fit in? What are the barriers and who put them there? What happens when cultures collide? Does anybody listen? Adult: 14, Member: 12; Adult/young person 10; Season Free Vibrant movement with music and song, laced with humour, combine in this hourlong production for audiences of all ages. With four dancers and live music mixed by Mariam, Citizen takes us on the journey so many immigrants have made. 6 Charlie McKerron with Ross Ainslie, Mark Clement and Tim Edey Tarskavaig Hall Charlie is one of Scotland s finest fiddle players and a frequent visitor to Skye - he will be back in August. He is joined by three renowned Scots trad musicians: Ross Ainslie, Marc Clement and Tim Edey, who was the Radio 2 Folk Musician of the Year in Wednesday 29 March, 7.30pm Diciadain 29 Am Màrt, 7.30f Tarskavaig Hall has the best view of any village hall in Scotland and has very limited seating. Booking is essential. Bring your own bottle. Entry by donation Thursday 30 March, 7.30pm Diardaoin, 30 Am Màrt, 7.30f Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Music Course Traditional concert The Traditional Music Course students from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig present a night of Gaelic song, music and piping. With guest pipers, singers and musicians Decker Forrest, Christine Primrose, Murdo Cameron and Angus MacKenzie and students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. 7 Friday 31 March, 8pm Dihaoine, 31 Am Màrt, 8f The Dead Man s Waltz vs Injuns A 10th birthday celebration The Dead Man s Waltz are four musicians from Skye who are re-imagining their traditions into a style they call folk noir. The Dead Man s Waltz are set to return in 2017 to celebrate their tenth birthday (in various guises...) with a tour and two further singles - as weird, as badass and as wonderful as ever. The Dead Man s Waltz find the common ground between the bleak tragedy of the island folk ballads and the more flamboyant execution of the European cabaret tradition. Thursday 6 April, 7.30pm Diardaoin 6 An Giblean, 7.30f A Stone s Throw is a modern day fairytale about a girl who throws a stone at the sun and knocks it down. Exploring environmental issues, overcoming our fears and notions of self worth, A Stone s Throw blends shadow puppetry, live music, innovative movement and storytelling with Giddy Aunt s trademark witty style and dark humour. Meet the legendary Bird King, West Coast s terrifying Lighthouse Lady and the wise Giant Sloth, as we journey across the planet on a quest to piece the sun back together again before the earth is changed forever. The event forms part of the Puppet Animation Festival Sixty minutes long and suitable for ages five plus. 9 Shappi Khorsandi Oh My Country Star of Live at the Apollo stand-up comedy Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC main hall Star of Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre s Comedy Roadshow, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Have I Got News for You and QI, Shappi Khorsandi is back with a brand new show for Shappi is celebrating the 40th anniversary of her arrival in Britain from Iran. She s reclaiming patriotism, sending a love letter to her adopted land. Please don t come if you re a skinhead (though naturally bald folk are welcome). Shappi has whip-crack jokes and is effortlessly funny as she handles every subject with a razor sharp wit, softened only by her deliciously mischievous delivery and endless charm. Suitable for audiences 16+ Seriously funny and suprisingly filthy. The New Statesman Makes live comedy thrilling. London Evening Standard All tickets 12 Friday 7 April, 7.30pm Dihaoine, 7 An Giblean, 7.30f Inner Sound Singers The Spring Concert Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC main hall A choral concert of soloists, young and old, from the Skye and Lochalsh singing group directed by Ann Lampard. The concert will include pieces from light opera and music from the classical repertoire. Adults 12, Members 10, Student/young person 6, Seasons Free 8f Màiri Chaimbeul and Jenna Moynihan with Brìghde Chaimbeul and Speyfest Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, An Talla Mòr Award-winning musicians, Màiri Chaimbeul, from Skye and Jenna Moynihan, from Lakewood, NY, combine to make contemporary music rooted in traditional Scottish and Appalachian Old- Time. The pair met in 2012 whilst studying at Berklee College of Music and are a product of the thriving and rich Boston music community. They are joined by Brìghde Chaimbeul, The Radio 2 young Folk Award winner. The evening opens with musicians from The Young Entertainer, a Speyfest project. The finalists are out on tour of the Highlands with clarsach, fiddles, whistles/small pipes, Scots song and creative dance. 10 Tuesday 11 April, 7.30pm Dimàirt 11 An Giblean, 7.30f Hamish Napier and Ross Martin Dallahan Award-winning musicians from SMO s Short Courses, Hamish Napier, flute and whistle; and guitarist Ross Martin, start the night with some good music and craic. Dallahan is one of the fastest rising forces on the international folk circuit. Heavily rooted in trad Irish music, the band call on their mixed heritage to create a unique and seamless musical montage, drawing in influences from jazz, funk, pop and classical music. Some of the most exciting trad musicians to emerge in recent years. Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2 Like a world music festival in one group. LiveIreland Adults 14, Members/Students 12, Young persons 5, Seasons Free Friday 14 April, 2pm Dihaoine 14 An Giblean, 2f The Magic Horse Yugen Puppet Co: Puppet Animation Festival Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC main hall Fingal is seeking his fortune when his tired old horse is replaced by a magic one. The Magic Horse takes him on an adventure to meet a prince who then sends Fingal on a number of quests to win the heart of a Princess. But who will win her love in the end? And what will become of the magic horse? In this storytelling show with audience involvement, performed in a vivid and colourful cloth setting of patchwork trees, fields and sky, children become courtiers, mountains and magnificent castles. Puppets move through human forests and snapping crocodile waters on an ever changing shadow backdrop. 45 minutes long. 11 Ìmar with Mairead Stewart and Ewen Henderson Tuesday 18 April 8pm Dimàirt 18 An Giblean 8f Glasgow-based five-piece Ìmar are a lineup featuring current and former members of Mànran, RURA, Talisk, Barrule, Cara, Mabon and The Lowground, whose collective trophy-cabinet includes a BBC Young Folk Award and many All-Britain/All- Ireland titles. Striking musicianship, artful arrangements and sheer, absolute delight. Songlines Mairead Stewart, Gaelic singer from Lewis and Ewen Henderson, Gaelic singer and instrumentalist from Fort William are tutors at the Short Courses at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig this week. Adults 14, Members/ Students 12, young persons 7, Seasons Free George Egg: Anarchist Cook One man, one hotel room, three courses Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC Main hall Join George Egg for this comedy show meets illustrated lecture meets cookery demonstration and discover the science behind his absurd but resourceful cooking methods. The Edinbuirgh Fringe favourite comedian will deliver a complete three-course meal using only the tools available in a standard hotel room. It is refreshing to encounter a performer who is really unique. The Telegraph A hilarious show with surprisigly good food. The Times Wednesday 19 April, 8pm Diciadain 19 An Giblean, 8f A genius... Monday 24 April, 8pm Diluain 24 An Giblean 8f Veronica and Max of The Red Wine Serenaders Italian blues and ragtime from European winners The Red Wine Serenaders is a musical project featuring a talented combo of musicians who passionately play country blues and ragtime, hokum, jug band and rural music from the 20s and 30s. Kathleen MacInnes, is a highly regarded Gaelic singer, actress and tv presenter from South Uist. Irish harpist Laoise Kelly has three critically acclaimed solo albums. Uillean piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn has been regularly touring and performing across the world since Adults 12, Members 10, Students/Young Persons 6, Seasons Free Veronica Sbergia and Max De Bernardi, originators of the project, like to keep this precious musical heritage alive faithfully reproducing its original sound whilst playing it with a modern twist. In 2002, he travelled to the West Bank to make a film documentary about the International Solidarity Movement called Jeremy Hardy vs. The Israeli Army. Thursday 1 June, 8pm Diardaoin 1 An t-ogmhios, 8f The Kelvin Ensemble Orchestra 30 piece Chamber orchestra of Glasgow students Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC Main Hall The Kelvin Ensemble was founded in 1991 by a group of students at Glasgow University, providing musicians from across the university with the opportunity to perform classical music concerts under the direction of professional conductors. Now 10 years old, the Ensemble is recognised as one of Scotland s leading non-professional chamber orchestras. Adults 12, Members/Students 10, Young Persons 6, Seasons Free He is best known as a regular on Radio 4 panel games such as The News Quiz, I m Sorry I Haven t A Clue and Just A Minute. TV appearances include QI, Blackadder Goes Forth and Mock The Week. Jeremy has been a regular columnist for London s ES Magazine and the Guardian and has written two books, Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation, based on his Radio 4 series of the same name, and When Did You Last See Your Father. 14 Skyedance Showcase Young, talented contemporary dancers Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, TDC Main Hall First established in 2003, the first Skyedance showcase was performed in June 2004 and was a sell-out hit, confirming the appetite and passion for dance on the Island. Performed by the young dancers from Skye and Lochalsh, the annual showcase continues to highlight the diversity and quality of instruction available. Saturday 17 June, 7.30pm Disathairne 17 An t-ogmhios, 7.30f It brings together dancers from the regular Skyedance classes as well as providing a platform for all dancers and teachers of dance in the area. It has become a highlight for both the dancers and the wider public. Adults 14, Members 12, Students/Young Persons 7, Seasons Free In 2014, six musicians from Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia met for the first time in a studio in the Highlands. For five days they immersed themselves in the creation of new music together, combining their different backgrounds and musical traditions to create something completely unique. Six days later they emerged and performed five concerts in Scotland, culminating in a show at Celtic Connections. Thus, The Secret North was born.
