2 FOREWORD Welcome to the 23 rd annual Newpark Music Festival. The festival will take place from Tuesday 6 th May until Sunday 11 th May in The Freemasons Hall, 17 Molesworth Street Dublin 2. Please note the change of venue. The closing date for postal entries is Friday 28 th March Application forms can be downloaded from Online entries may be made through and will close on Monday 7 th April. An additional charge will apply if entering online. Please peruse the general rules and conditions and the rules concerning accompanists on page 7. Note that an official accompanist is not available for any Over 16 or adult competitions. The daily admission fee will be 4 for adults and child admission is free. Season tickets will be available at a cost of 12 and will entitle the bearer to attend all competitions over the six days. 4 Margaret O'Sullivan Farrell Margaret O Sullivan Farrell studied piano with Elizabeth Costello at the Dublin Municipal School of Music, now the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, where she was awarded the top prize, the Lorcan Sherlock Gold Medal for advanced piano performance. She went on to study for the BMus Degree at UCD. While there she also conducted the St Stephen s Singers madrigal group in concerts, festivals, broadcasts and competitions. She continued her piano studies, becoming a licentiate of Trinity College of Music, London, and specialised in teaching, as well as accompaniment and duo playing. Margaret was a lecturer in Keyboard Studies at the DIT Conservatory from 1980 until her recent retirement. She is currently training to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique, a subject in which she has had an abiding interest, especially in its application to piano performance. Margaret has appeared in concert with many eminent instrumentalists and singers. She has also broadcast extensively on RTE radio and television as well as appearing on UTV and on BBC Northern Ireland. She has recorded two CDs with violinists Geraldine O Grady and Oonagh Keogh, and performed with them on several national tours. As repetiteur she worked with the Dublin Grand Opera Society, the Irish National Opera and many music societies as well as acting as official accompanist for competitions, auditions, examinations and masterclasses. Margaret is much sought after as an adjudicator at music festivals, and has acted in this role in Dublin, Arklow and Derry. She has been Vice-chairman of EPTA Ireland (European Piano Teachers Association) and has delivered several workshops for them on pedagogical subjects. Margaret has collaborated with one of her past students at the Conservatory, the Malaysian musician and author, Ying Ying Ng, in the publication of Poco Piano for Young Children, a series of well-received piano tutor books. She is researching the life and work of the German musician, conductor and composer, Hans Waldemar Rosen, and in 2009 had an article on him published University of Limerick s publication Irish-German Studies: Creative Influences. With the support of DIT, Margaret is presently editing a complete edition of Beethoven s arrangements of Irish Airs, with texts newly-chosen by Tomás Ó Súilleabháin. She will be the executive producer of a recording of the complete Airs by staff, students and alumni of the Conservatory in Shirin Goudarzi-Tobin Shirin Goudarzi-Tobin was born in Tehran where she began her musical studies. She was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hochschule für Musik Vienna, where she obtained her teaching and performing degrees. She came to live in Dublin in 1985 and since then has been an active chamber musician and soloist. She has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and has made several recordings for RTE radio and television. She also holds an MA degree in Performance and Musicology from NUI Maynooth and lectures at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

5 David O'Doherty David O Doherty studied with Ronald Masin at the DIT Conservatory of Music, Dublin and received a B.Mus. Performance Degree in In 2000 he received a Premier Prix de Virtuosite from the Conservatoire of Lausanne, Switzerland where he studied with Pierre Amoyal and Jean Jaquerod. At the Geneva Conservatory David graduated from the class of Gabor Takacs-Nagy in 2005 as leader of the Byron String Quartet with whom he continued to work in the class of the Ysaye Quartet in Paris as well as in Pro-Quartet; a scheme for the development and promotion of professional ensembles. In 1997 David made his American debut live on the Boston Radio show "Morning pro Musica" and a year later made his soloist's debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. This was followed by recitals at the National Concert Hall, the Bank Ireland Arts Centre, New World Music Festival in Venezuela and in Switzerland with Pierre Amoyal. David is co-founder of the Paderewski Trio in Switzerland and of the Reflecting Strings Harp Trio in Ireland with whom he has released four cds. Now a lecturer at the D.I.T conservatory of music in Dublin, he shares his time between solo performances and giving chamber recitals throughout Europe. Marion Hyland Marion Hyland started her musical career at the College of Music studying piano with Maura Russell and went on to study classical guitar with Andrew Robinson at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She then went on to work with Timothy Kain and Gordon Crosskey of the Royal Northern College of Music and on completing her studies,she took up the post of classical guitar lecturer at the RIAM, which she has held for over thirty years. She is a dedicated teacher and takes great pleasure and interest in teaching all levels from very young to third level with many successes both in Ireland and abroad. She has given guitar workshops and seminars throughout the country and has been extern examiner for DIT and CIT. A Feis Ceoil winner and a member of the string committee she is responsible for the introduction of two guitar competitions to the Feis, the under 15 and under 13 for which she has donated the Marion Hyland Cup. Marion has a great interest in chamber music and has worked with many ensembles within the Academy and with the Guitar Festival of Ireland. In 2011 the Academy guitar ensemble GuitaRIAM under the direction of Marion, was formed and gave its first performance of Steve Reich s Electric Counterpoint in the Kevin Barry Room of the National Concert Hall as part of The Great Music in Irish Houses Festival. The ensemble will give three Irish Premiers of works by the French composer and guitarist Roland Dyens next May, one of which is a new work commissioned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the guitar festival.

6 Ciaran O'Connell Ciarán O Connell is a lecturer in flute performance at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama where he has taught since His early flute studies were with William Dowdall at the innovative wind band programme at CBS Westland Row. He later participated in masterclasses and had private lessons with Geoffrey Gilbert. Ciarán has performed with the NSO, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, ICO, and has played for many theatre and opera productions. Recent performances include the Kilkenny Arts Festival, St. Stephens Church, the Pepper Canister and at the St Patricks s Festival, Sigoyer, France. He is in demand as a flute specialist and has tutored the flute sections of the JNYO, DYO, IYWE and is regularly invited to adjudicate, examine and give masterclasses at music festivals and schools. An enthusiastic and dedicated teacher his students range from beginners to masters level, many of whom have been prizewinners at local and national level, while some have successful careers in the music business. A keen chamber musician Ciarán has a special interest in the repertoire for wind quintet; flute and guitar, and more recently flute and organ. In 2003 Ciarán was awarded an MPhil for his research into the influences on Flute Performance and Pedagogy in Dublin, Sylvia O'Regan Sylvia O Regan, is the Head of the Vocal Faculty at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. She is a graduate of University College Dublin with a BA, and Higher Diploma in Education; she also holds a Licentiate and Fellowship from Trinity College London, as well as a Masters in Performance and Musicology from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. An accomplished performer, she has been regularly engaged for concerts and recitals in the major Irish venues. She has also been soloist in concerts and operas in Italy, Spain and throughout the UK. She has sung roles for Opera Ireland in the Gaiety Theatre and for the national broadcasting station, RTE; the RTE Proms, and has made numerous appearances on RTE Radio and TV. Sylvia won critical acclaim for the role of Mercedes at the National Arts Centre in Canada, as part of the late Bernadette Greevy s production of Carmen, which was recorded for National Canadian, South American and Dutch radio and television networks. In addition, she won many prizes and awards for singing, not the least of which were bursaries to study at three of the courses on the Britten-Pears Programme at Aldeburgh in the UK. Out of the French Song Course, she was invited to study with renowned soprano Suzanne Danco in Italy, as her scholarship student. She has given workshops throughout Ireland, including to the RTE Philharmonic Choir; Soundset Ensemble, and as part of the National Concert Hall Education Outreach team. She has also given masterclasses at the Yorke Trust in the UK. Sylvia was a vocal consultant to Ulster Youth Choir for their Summer Schools, and more recently, instructed on the inaugural Anúna Choral Summer School at the NCH. She also presented a lecture on singing at the most recent Society of Musicologists in Ireland Conference which was hosted by the RIAM. Sylvia is fast becoming regarded as one of Ireland s most successful singing teachers: many of her students have enjoyed critical acclaim at competition and performance both national and international, which includes very high-profile engagements. Sylvia also adjudicates regularly at examinations and competitions.

7 RULES AND CONDITIONS 1. All competitions must be entered for online at newparkmusic.ie or by post on an official entry form which can be downloaded from newparkmusic.ie 2. Entry fees must accompany completed entry forms. Entry fees will not be refunded unless a competition is cancelled. 3. The closing date for postal entries is Friday 28 th March Please forward entries to Newpark Music Centre, Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, Co. Dublin. 4. Online entries will close on Monday 7 th April. No entries will be accepted after these dates. 5. Ages shall be reckoned from 1 st May No candidate may enter a competition in which they won first prize in the previous year. 7. Where competitors are asked to play one piece, this means one short piece or one movement of a work. 8. Where there is a large entry for a given class, the competition will be divided into reasonable sizes, each being a separate competition. 9. Competitions will not be held unless they have three or more entries. 10. Copies of music to be performed should be provided for the adjudicator. 11. The adjudicator s decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into, under any circumstances. RULES RE: ACCOMPANISTS 1. There will be an official accompanist available for all Under 16 Competitions. Candidates may provide their own accompanist if they so wish. 2. Competitors wishing to use an official accompanist must submit a copy of the accompaniment with their entries. Accompanists will under no circumstances accompany any candidate presenting music on the day of the competition. 3. Accompanists will only play in the submitted key. 4. Official accompanists will not provide any rehearsal for competitions. 5. Competitors may not use tapes or CDs as a means of accompaniment.

COAKLEY FULLER CUP (14 and over) Presented by Ms. Elizabeth Fuller for the best performance of a piece from the Baroque Era. Candidates to present one piece, not exceeding 10 minutes. 9. JUNIOR PIANO SONATA CUP (Under 16) Presented by Evelyn Hearns for the best performance of a Sonata movement. Movement should not exceed 8 minutes. 10. SENIOR PIANO SONATA CUP (16 and Over) Presented by Ms. Evelyn Hearns for the best performance of a Sonata movement. Movement should not exceed 10 minutes. 11. JNR PIANO REPERTOIRE - The Fuller Trophy (Under 16) Presented by Ms. Elizabeth Fuller. Performers should present a contrasting programme of at least three works. Performers will be judged on both choice of programme and performance. Performance is not to exceed 12 minutes. 12. SNR PIANO REPERTOIRE - The Owen Walsh Perpetual Cup (16 and Over) Performers should present a contrasting programme of at least three works. Performers will be judged on both choice of programme and performance. Performance is not to exceed 15 minutes. 13. Duets Under Duets Under Duets Under Duets Under 18 PIANO DUETS

THE CONCERTO CUP - THE EVELYN LEVINS PERPETUAL CUP Presented by Nuala Levins O'Reilly for the best performance of a concerto movement. (18 and under) Open to all instruments including piano. Performers should present any movement from a concerto. Performance is not to exceed 15 minutes. (Cadenza where appropriate) Please note that the official accompanist is not available for this competition. CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITIONS Performers should present one piece of own choice, which demonstrates the interplay between their instruments. A minimum of three instruments is required to form a chamber group. Open to string, wind and brass instruments as well as piano trios. 40.
