CONCERT PROGRAMME 2017/18 SEASON
The initial steps towards realising the longcherished dream of the late PETRONAS Chairman, Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin, to create a youth orchestra as a stage for young talent, alongside the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, were taken on 13 January Some 500 aspiring instrumentalists from across Malaysia auditioned and 110 with an average age of 18 were selected to form the new Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO). After a period of intensive training under its Principal Conductor, Kevin Field, and mentors drawn from the ranks of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the MPYO gave its first public concert in Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS on 25 August It has since established a pattern of music camps held four times a year and culminating in performances in Kuala Lumpur and beyond. It has toured five states in Peninsula Malaysia (2007), Sabah and Sarawak (2008), and Penang and Pahang (2010), as well as giving sold-out concerts at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore in It has also performed in Brisbane, Australia in 2012 as part of an exchange programme with the Queensland Youth Orchestra. In November 2008, a second nationwide round of auditions was held to ensure the MPYO continues to fulfil its aim of encouraging young musicians to appreciate orchestral music and to build a pool of well-trained Malaysian instrumentalists, community and professional performers, teachers and inspired amateurs. The MPYO s repertoire ranges from the core symphonic repertoire to specially commissioned works by Malaysian composers. In an innovative project, Jazzaar, during June 2010, members of the orchestra collaborated with six leading jazz musicians from the USA, led by Fritz Renold (who wrote his Suite Nusantara specially for the project) in order to enrich and widen their musical experience. In 2013, the orchestra performed in Kedah with renowned local singers Datin Paduka Julie Sudiro and Datuk Yusni Hamid in a keroncong concert, further strengthening its versatility. The event was attended by HRH Agong of Kedah. In 2014, the ensemble performed with Yayasan Warisan Johor and Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia in Johore Bahru. In 2015, the MPYO was given the honour to perform at the opening of the 128 th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. 6 RADIO TELEVISION MALAYSIA ORCHESTRA Orkestra Radio Televisyen Malaysia (or RTM Orchestra) has kept a varied musical journey since its inception in the early 1960s. It has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the nation s longest-running orchestra. From its humble beginnings in 1961 as Orkes Radio Malaya, founded by Tan Sri Ahmad Merican, the initial 13-piece orchestra quickly became a driving force in shaping the country s musical direction. In 1963, it became Orkes Radio Malaysia before the name was changed to Orkestra RTM in 1967 when radio and television merged. Since then, RTM Orchestra ushered in a new spirit to celebrate local works of various genres, from patriotic to jazz. The orchestra has been led by five individuals: Alfonso Soliano, Dato Dr Johari Salleh, Gus Steyn, Dato Ahmad Dassilah and, since 1999, Dato Mokhzani Ismail. With its tagline Reaching Out, the orchestra has expanded to a total of 45 musicians including performers and music arrangers. Over the years, apart from nationwide tours as a broadcasting orchestra, the orchestra performed extensively at royal concerts, big-scaled concerts such as Malam Simfoni Irama Malaysia, Malam Simfoni Putrajaya, Jazz Tribute to Malaysian Composers, Gemilang 50 th Anniversary, Gemilang 70 th RTM and annual concerts with Asean Brodcasting stations in Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei and Thailand. The orchestra participated at international music festivals such as the Jakarta Jazz Festival and Java Jazz Festival where the RTM Big Band collaborated with Harvey Malaihollo. The orchestra has released 25 albums under Warner Music and Life Records.
Adibah Noor vocals Adibah Noor is an award-winning singer, talented actress and popular emcee. In 2006, she won Anugerah Juara Lagu with Terlalu Istimewa, a song that she collaborated with Azlan Abu Hassan. The song won Best Ballad, Best Vocals and Best Song awards. She has also starred in several local hit movies including Mukhsin, Sepet, Gubra and Talentime directed by the late Yasmin Ahmad. Jamal Abdillah vocals Datuk Haji Jamal Abdillah was born in 1959 in Ipoh, Perak. Hailed as the King of Pop of Malaysia, he won the Bintang RTM talent competition in 1979 and recorded his debut album Perpisahan Tanpa Relamu a year later. Jamal's many successful albums includes Mati Hidup Semula (1986); he wrote the title track based on his life experience. Other albums include Sepi Seorang Perindu (1989), Seniman Menangis (1990) and Jamal (1991). The song Kekasih Awal Dan Akhir stayed at number one on TV3 s Muzik Muzik for seven weeks. Jamal has won several awards for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the entertainment industry, including Anugerah Pencapaian Sepanjang Hayat at the Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian in He has held many successful concerts at Istana Budaya and became the first Malay artist to present a solo concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. He performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in In 2013, Jamal was conferred the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) that carried the title Dato by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah Sultan Abu Bakar.
Harvey Malaihollo vocals Harvey Malaihollo is no stranger to Malaysia, having performed here since the 1980s. In 2001, he recorded a duet with Sheila Majid entitled Begitulah Cinta, and in 2012, released a duet single with Dayang Nurfaizah entitled Gerimis Mengundang. In 1984, Harvey won the Golden Kite World Song Festival in Kuala Lumpur. Throughout his long-lasting musical career, he is best known for romantic hits such as Jerat, Tetaplah Bersamaku and Seandainya Selalu Satu. He compiled his twodecades hits in Reflections of Harvey Malaihollo. His impressive accolades include being the opening and closing artiste at the 17th SEA Games in Singapore (1993). Born as a Malukan, an Indonesian tribe famed for their natural music talents, Harvey practically grew up with music. He was introduced to jazz by an avid Sinatra fanboy that was his father and his mother who was a singer in an all-female group, Titaley Sisters. Breathing music since early on has encouraged Harvey to explore the fusion of jazz, keroncong, and other urban genres up to today. PROGRAMME NOTES Celebrating its 10 th anniversary this year, tonight s performance is the MPYO s joint concert with the RTM Orchestra, Malaysia s oldest orchestra, formed 56 years ago. This collaboration strengthens the MPYO s versatility towards a lighter musical genre. Di Sini Bermula, a hit R&B love song taken from Dayang Nurfaizah s 1999 debut album, opens the concert. Airmata Berderai, a song that fondly remembers a loved one, composed by the late RTM Orchestra s conductor, Alfonso Soliano, makes a fitting tribute to one of Malaysia s greatest music pioneers.
Gus Steyn s (RTM Orchestra s deputy leader from 1967 to 1969) symphonic score Overture Kuala Lumpur pays a colourful musical tribute to our great capital city. Razak Rahman then serenades us on the clarinet with Dark Eyes, with which he won the Bakat TV competition when he was 12 in His versatility on the tenor saxophone allows us to enjoy the haunting Jimmy Boyle s Jauh Jauh which describes a lover s despair. Adibah Noor presents Sudirman s evergreen song Hujan before she reinterprets the 1974 R&B hit single You Make Me Feel Brand New from The Stylistics fifth gold disc. M Nasir s beautiful composition, Suatu Masa, talks of a hopeful acceptance of a pure love. Famed Indonesian singer, Harvey Malaihollo, presents love songs; Dia, a beautiful song which he wrote, pleading for a soulmate to spend life with the beloved; and The Way You Look Tonight, a lovely pop jazz hit song from the Hollywood film Swing Time written by Jerome Kern. From Within is a Michel Camilo song taken from his 1993 Rendezvous jazz album. An instrumental jazz number by Jari Jaafar expounds on Love Never Felt So Good after the posthumous Michael Jackson hit song from his 2014 album Xscape. Dato Jamal Abdillah sings a medley of songs from his twelfth album, Penawar Kasih and thirteenth album, Samrah. The first medley comprises Ghazal Untuk Rabiah, named Best Song at the 1997 Anugerah Juara Lagu, Ghazal Asmara and Samrah Mentari. His second medley consists of Aku Penghibur and Kau Lupa Janji from his fifteenth and fifth album Aku Penghibur and Sendiri respectively. Harvey then sings one of his biggest hits, Jerat, which tells of a person that was infatuated with his first love. Begitulah Cinta, his beautiful duet originally sung with Sheila Majid, released in 2001, is now presented by him and Adibah. Concert Notes by Daniel Lee Jari Jaafar and current RTM Orchestra Music Director, Dato Mokhzani Ismail, present Meniti Pelangi, which won the 2000 Anugerah Muzik Indonesia's Best Jazz Album. The concert closes with Mokhzani s magnificent composition, We Are One, first performed at DFP at the 2011 Merdeka Awards and the MPO Gala Concert in The song contains striking images of the 1Malaysia concept and a firm idea of solidarity in mind, defining the song s unifying qualities.
