5 Welcome Welcome to the Index of Research and Academic Activities (IRAA) of Nordoff Robbins Scotland. With a focus on , IRAA provides an overview of research and other academic work such as publications and conference presentations that has been undertaken by current Nordoff Robbins Scotland music therapy practitioners and researchers. Reflecting on the past and looking towards the future, IRAA is being published at a turning point in the Charity s history. In addition to celebrating 20 years of Nordoff Robbins Scotland work, 2016 has been a year of establishing our in-house research activity. Looking ahead, we hope not only to capitalise on existing knowledge and expertise within Nordoff Robbins Scotland, but also to look outwards and develop collaborations with key partners. Such partners include, for example, other charitable organisations as well as higher education institutions which seek to explore and advance music s role in human life and wellbeing. If you wish to find out more about IRAA and our ongoing research activities, or if you would like to discuss possibilities for collaboration, please feel free to contact us on research@nrscot.org.uk With best wishes, Giorgos Tsiris Head of Research, Nordoff Robbins Scotland December 2016, Edinburgh Nordoff Robbins Scotland IRAA

7 Introduction Content and structure The Index of Research and Academic Activities (IRAA) is a resource that compiles all research and academic activities that Nordoff Robbins Scotland music therapy practitioners and researchers have undertaken since Organised in the four sections listed below, most activities are presented here in the form of references, and in cases of freely available material such as articles published in open access journals the relevant online links are provided. PUBLICATIONS: This section includes publications in academic and other related sources, such as peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. In addition to work that has been published since 2015, this section lists publications which were in press at the time of the IRAA compilation. CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS: This section includes presentations that have been given at academic and professional conferences nationally and internationally. A range of presentations from keynotes to workshops and poster presentations are listed. TEACHING: This section includes lectures and workshops that have been delivered at external organisations, such as universities. Teaching activities that have taken place as part of continuing professional development (CPD) events are listed too. PROJECTS: This section includes research and doctoral projects. In addition to projects that have been completed since 2015, this section includes ongoing projects some of which have commenced prior to Most projects are part of collaborative research initiatives with other UK-based organisations, while some projects have been kindly supported by different funding bodies. The range of research and academic activities listed within each section reflects the commitment of Nordoff Robbins Scotland music therapy practitioners and researchers to knowledge development and dissemination. Although these activities draw from, and feed back to, music therapists work, many activities have taken place thanks to people s devotion and generosity of time that exceeds their typical duties. IRAA acknowledges and celebrates people s work and commitment by including all their activities. The contributing Nordoff Robbins Scotland music therapist or researcher is underlined in each IRAA reference. Where possible, Nordoff Robbins Scotland has supported these research and academic activities by providing, for example, the necessary resources. These supported activities are indicated throughout IRAA with the symbol NRS next to the respective reference. Most importantly, Nordoff Robbins Scotland endeavours to cultivate a creative and stimulating working environment; an environment where music therapists and researchers are encouraged to grow as reflective practitioners who ask questions and explore further how music can change lives. 8 Introduction Nordoff Robbins Scotland team, July 2016, Edinburgh A note on method The information included in IRAA was collected via an online survey in October The survey was sent to all Nordoff Robbins Scotland staff who worked as music therapy practitioners and/or researchers at the time of the IRAA compilation (n=17). Participants were invited to report any research and academic work that they had undertaken since Such work included publications and projects which were in press or ongoing respectively at the time of the IRAA compilation. A numeric overview In total, IRAA lists 83 research and academic activities, with 27 of these activities being supported by Nordoff Robbins Scotland. As shown in Figure 1, most activities relate to conference presentations (35%) and teaching (31%). Teaching also features the largest number of Nordoff Robbins Scotland (NRS) supported activities (n=17). A detailed breakdown of these research and academic activities per year is provided in Figure 2. Almost half of all activities (52%) took place during 2016, while 10 publications and projects were in press or ongoing at the time of the IRAA compilation. 6 Nordoff Robbins Scotland IRAA
