1 Towards working in the Transference Ten two hour workshops of lectures and experiential learning in music psychotherapy For newly qualified therapists and more experienced clinicians keen to explore this way of working. Places are limited to a maximum of Twelve. Thursday Evenings : 6-8 pm April 25th to June 27th 2013 Facilitator : Andy Lale Music Therapist Location : Upper Hall, Claremont Centre 24 27th White Lion Street, London, N1 9PD Contact : info@musicpsychotherapy.org.uk Music Psychotherapists tend to hone their craft after graduating from their initial training in Music Therapy, building on the thoughtful groundwork laid on the MA courses. Working in the transference, is a profound responsibility and in order to fully understand and embody the work, clinicians need to ensure that they have received enough psychoanalytic psychotherapy themselves and taken further academic and clinical training in psychodynamic music psychotherapy. I am often reminded by newly qualified therapists that the emphasis while training on providing an academic overview of this wide and deep subject, can leave some unsure about the clinical 'core' of the work, especially when faced with verbal clients with mental health issues.this introduction to Music Psychotherapy offers one route for NQTs to develop their stance and should be a valuable contribution to their ongoing CPD requirement. Certificates of attendance will be provided.

2 Course outline: Over the course of ten, two hour workshops, and through the confidential presentation of live clinical cases by the group and facilitator, participants will deepen their understanding of the psychodynamic interaction between music psychotherapist and client. Through set texts from Kleinian and post Kleinian analysts, participants will expand their theoretical base. Through shared music making, participants will explore clinical improvisation from an analytic perspective. Week One: 25th April Lecture : Psychodynamics Week Two: 2nd May Lecture : The Oedipus Complex from a Freudian and Kleinian perspective Week Three: 9th May Lecture: Klein & Object Relationships Week Four: 16th May Lecture: Projective and Introjective Identification Week Five: 23rd May Lecture: Freud and Rosenfeld On Narcissism Week Six: 30th May Lecture: Bion & Attacks on Linking Week Seven: 6th June Lecture: Steiner & Psychic Retreats

3 Week Eight: 13th June Lecture: Mentalisation Week Nine: 20th June Group discussion Week Ten: 27th June Group discussion The facilitator Andy Lale has a long standing interest in music and mental health in its widest and deepest sense and is particularly interested in psychoanalytic ideas and concepts. He qualified as a music therapist in 1998 and has a broad and deep understanding of the spectrum of music therapy practice in the UK. He holds a further MA in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and undertook a full Freudian Analysis. He has worked within the specialism of psychodynamic music therapy in adult mental health for fourteen years, and worked prior to training as an MT, with children and young people on the autistic spectrum and with learning difficulties and disabilities. Andy is an experienced presenter. Evidence of previous seminars and quotes from students attending a recent "lets engage" summer school for Roehampton University can be read as an appendix Andy has been a clinical supervisor for ten years for qualified music therapists and trainees. Within his role as lead specialist music psychotherapist for South Westminster at CNWL he has provided professional development for staff through ICAPT short courses in psychoanalytic thinking for Arts therapists, focusing most recently on the journey from concrete to symbolic thinking in psychotic patients. He maintains a professional level of expertise as a musician and continues to compose original material for public performance.
