2 Message from our Musical Director As the last firework leaves a perennial dent in the bonnet of my car I know it is time to begin preparing for Christmas. The high street have been offering deals on Yuletide tat since October, the Oxford Street lights are adding to the pressure on the National Grid (I believe you can see the blaze from space) and the Eynsford Concert Band are now rehearsing ready for the forthcoming family concerts in December. This year I am delighted to announce a record sell-out at the Mike Jagger Centre this Christmas. For those who have missed out there is another chance to see us at St Nicholas' Church in Sevenoaks on 10 December where the band will accompany the church and school choir to help celebrate the meaning of Christmas. Alongside seasonal rehearsals we have been furiously practicing an Adam Gorb piece 'Yiddish Dances' for a regional festival in Colchester. Under the direction of the British Association of Symphonic and Wind Ensembles, the band is hoping for more national recognition. Next year promise to be busy opening with a concert in May under the title of 'Cries of London' including a piece of the same name and music associated with our great capital city. At the other end of the year we will present two concerts at the Mike Jagger Centre adding a matinee to embrace our young audience. I am excited to see the band thriving. With an audition process in place to ensure standards remain high, I am pleased that we have very few remaining vacancies for new players. The evening will conclude with the Eynsford Concert Band performing a programme of popular classics. A programme of traditional carols, popular Christmas classics, the St Nicholas Choir and the St Nicholas Drama Group. All followed by a glass of mulled wine and mince pies in the vestry. 4 Band Tour Cruising the Fjords of Norway This August, the Eynsford Concert Band were honoured to play as part of the entertainment programme on board Fred.Olsen's Black Watch cruise of the Fjords of Norway. For 8 days, the band and a large group of friends and family were paying passengers aboard this magnificent ship, able to enjoy a perfect summer holiday together. The bonus was performing four onboard concerts for the enjoyment of the passengers and crew. These included 'Broadway Showstoppers' evening entertainment, an 'At the Movies' afternoon Matinee and a dramatic outdoors 'Proms' performance with the magnificent Nordfjord as our backdrop as we cruised away from Olden. After leaving Dover, our ports of call were: Bergen, Hordaland Fjaerland, Sognefjord Balestrand, Sognefjord Olden, Nordfjord Eidfjord, Hardangerfjord Kirkwall, Orkneys A great time was had by all and this is something the band will be considering repeating in the future. Please visit our webshop at John Hutchins John Hutchins has enjoyed connections with the Eynsford Concert Band for many years and was appointed Musical Director in Having graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a first class honours degree, John is now enjoying a career as a freelance trumpeter. He has performed worldwide with orchestras such as the Royal Opera House Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra and the Philharmonia. John is also a keen exponent of baroque music specialising on the natural trumpet (an instrument without valves). He performs and records regularly with some of the world s finest Baroque ensembles including the Kings Consort, The Sixteen, the Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment, Florilegium, the Hanover Band, the New York Collegium and the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra. Brass coaching features highly in John s career encompassing work as far a field as the Vietnamese Symphony Orchestra and Wells International School of Music. He has also contributed to various brass publications and co-written a study book for trumpet. He currently teaches at Junior Trinity College and is Professor of Baroque trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music where John has recently been elected an Associate.
