Your contact person in the International Office is Marieke Steijvers, you can her for more information or further clarification. You must upload the following via / via We-Transfer to M.Steijvers@artez.nl: Application form Motivation letter CV with personal data (address, former education, language skills et cetera) YouTube video, Vimeo or another similar website If you have a preference for a specific teacher, for your primary module, please inform us of this on your application form. This is compulsory, and you will not be considered for an exchange without it. Admission Applying does not necessarily lead to placement. Applications are examined for compliance with the program requirements. Complete applications are then handed over to the head of the department and departmental coordinator. Applicants are selected on the basis of the quality of their application, their artistic level and staff resources. We will notify all applicants on the results of the selection procedure within 6 weeks of the application deadline. Accepted students will receive a letter of acceptance in form and the International Office of their home institution will receive a letter of acceptance. 17 Assessment Classical Music Assessment by the primary subject instructor at the end of each semester. Criteria The student should have mastered the agreed elements. Specific criteria: creativity, expression, improvisation, technique, sound, timing, reading skill, repertoire knowledge, progress, self-reflection, attitude and lesson preparation. Examination procedure At the end of both semesters the instructor fills out an assessment form designed specifically for this module. Assessment is comprised of a verbal evaluation and a concluding grade. The instructor reviews this assessment with the student during the first subsequent lesson. ArtEZ, July
18 Jazz & Pop - Bachelor - Arnhem & Zwolle "The boundaries between jazz and pop are flexible and dynamic. Interaction between the two can lead to new musical styles." As exchange student in the program Jazz and Pop you learn about music, and about the ins and outs of your instrument, but you can choose the genre for a large part yourself, bebop, hard-rock, dubstep, free improvisation, Latin, fusion or whatever style you prefer as a main focus. The program objective is for students to choose from these options as they develop their own musical personality. We offer a wide range of minors that make personalized and innovative combinations possible. ArtEZ has a Jazz & Pop program in two different cities of the Netherlands, Arnhem and Zwolle. Each location has a different focus and different language requirements. An Exchange student officially signed in for an exchange program in Arnhem or Zwolle can however, choose teachers from both locations. The Jazz & Pop program for exchange students has a flexible and personal approach and may include modules/classes that are not offered in the department at the location of choice. For example we could have an exchange student in Arnhem Jazz & Pop with a weekly lesson with his chosen teacher in Zwolle, this would be stipulated in his learning agreement beforehand and of course all his/her other classes will be taken in Arnhem. Choosing Arnhem or Zwolle In each city there's a different focus on Jazz & Pop. The available course options can also influence your choice for a particular location. Choose the best option for you, the location where you think you can develop your musical personality. Accordion Arnhem Guitar Arnhem Zwolle Cello Arnhem Composing Arnhem Composition Film & Theatre Arnhem Double bass Arnhem Zwolle Drums Arnhem Zwolle Flute Arnhem Gitaar Arnhem Zwolle Percussion Arnhem Piano & keys Arnhem Zwolle Vocals/Singing Arnhem Zwolle Clarinet Arnhem Saxophone Arnhem Zwolle Trombone Arnhem Zwolle Trumpet Arnhem Zwolle Viola Arnhem Violin Arnhem Exchange students are welcome in Arnhem & Zwolle in semester 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 year, 3, 4. There is a slight preference for students coming for a year (instead of a semester), which has to do with the fact that most of the modules run for a year. Assessment Assessment by the main subject instructor at the end of each semester. Criteria The student should have mastered the elements described under Aims. ArtEZ, July
19 Specific criteria: creativity, expression, improvisation, technique, sound, timing, reading skill, repertoire knowledge, progress, self-reflection, attitude and lesson preparation. Pass requirements The student has completed this module if he is awarded a minimum grade of 5.5 at the end of the second semester. Examination procedure At the end of both semesters the instructor fills out an assessment form designed specifically for this module. Assessment is comprised of a verbal evaluation and a concluding grade. The instructor reviews this assessment with the student during the first subsequent lesson. ArtEZ, July
20 Curriculum Jazz & Pop Arnhem Jazz & Pop in Arnhem focuses on artistic, individualistic musicians, who will decide for themselves whether they will either specialize or develop on a more all-round basis. They are also frequently interested in working with other arts disciplines, which is actively facilitated by the fact that Jazz & Pop is located on an arts campus with a great many interdisciplinary crossovers. For instance, the Department of Fashion Design has experimented with live music during a catwalk show. The presence of dance, theatre, fine art, fashion, composition for film and theatre, music theatre and other disciplines is a source of inspiration that also generates new forms of collaboration. If you are joining us in the 3rd or 4th year you can try to connect with a coaching band. Coaching bands are bands formed by ArtEZ students themselves. These bands play their own style, from Jazz to Death Metal, from Free Impro to top-40 covers, the whole spectrum. The band chooses its own material, records in a studio for a few days, does at least concerts in and outside ArtEZ, and much more. The bands are coached by a selection of teachers one afternoon every 3 weeks. In our opinion this is a nice start to networking in the Netherlands, and, vice versa, a student from abroad brings their own network and opportunities. Please note that, as part of the electives, in year, 3 and 4 at least 6 EC (of which at least 3 EC in year and/or 3) must be allocated to educational subjects. All up to date information concerning Jazz & Pop Arnhem is available through the online infokit. 21 Curriculum Jazz & Pop Zwolle Exchange students are welcome in Zwolle in semester 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 year, 3, 4. The Jazz & Pop course at Zwolle is characterized by its musical diversity and its positive atmosphere. During the first two years of the course a broadly based orientation lays the fundament for dealing effectively with a wide range of styles and roles in your future career. At the other hand this broadly based orientation and extensive knowledge you acquire are also a solid starting point for thorough specialization. During the last two years a wide range of electives gives you plenty of possibilities for that specialization, ranging from all-round musicianship to education and from composition to focusing on Pop, Jazz or related styles. Since the Classical Music department of ArtEZ is also situated in Zwolle there are also plenty of possibilities to work on crossovers with Classical Music. At the Jazz & Pop Course in Zwolle most bigger group classes are taught in Dutch, but smaller and individual classes can easily be taught in English as well.
