4 GOD S LOVE A Cantata or Holy Week by Kenneth L Morrison, ASCAP (or SATB Choir, Piano, Organ, String Quartet, and eatured soloists) FROM THE COMPOSER esus loved people: his amily, his disciples, those ho drited in and out o his elloship o believers and spiritual coanions, the eish crods that came to hear him speak, the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the saints and the sinners, the sick and the ell, the Samaritans and the e gentiles ho came to him or help He loved them each and every one ith the love o God Everything esus said and did can be vieed as a careully-crated expression o God s love or people around him to experience Today, each person around us needs that experience just as much as did his irst-century olloers I once served a congregation hose vision statement encouraged each person to make our church a elloship and a place Where love becomes action That thought inspired me to take a ne vie o the events o the last eek o esus lie and ministry I asked o each episode, Ho does the action o esus in this story reveal God s love? Subsequently, I asked mysel, Ho do the actions o esus teach me to better practice God s love? God s love is not a theology or a theory; it is a practice Those o us ho ollo esus are called to be a people hose lives are marked by love becoming proactive in meaningul ays as e address a variety o real lie situations Here are some o the actions I observed in esus last days that people ant to see hen they observe those o us ho ollo esus today: 1 Heartelt respect and aection or one another 2 Sharing o each other s joys and concerns Courage and hope in the ace o death Real human struggle hen e encounter threats and eigh our options A commitment to justice that extends to sel-sacriice What e do and hat others see in us becomes hat they believe not only about us but also about esus and the Father Their observations determine hether they ant to risk opening themselves to God s love and to the ne lie o the kingdom o God ith us
