1 2 oreord Worship Although in today s church it happens in a ide array o styles and approaches, orship is an essential component o our spiritual experience rom the time o Martin Luther until today, great poets and lyricists have put into ords deep and aiding expressions o adoration, praise, aith, devotion, contrition, hope and oy that have inspired, encouraged, and transormed those ho ould seek to kno God, to learn aout His love, His plans or our lives, and His promises o our eternal uture These texts have come alive as composers have set them to melodies and harmonizations that make their expression connect ith our hearts and lodge in our minds so that the truths expressed therein persist and endure throughout our spiritual ourney The union o ord ith music can e so integral and so poerul that eventually one hardly exists ithout the other I no longer can read a portion o scripture used in Handel s Messiah ithout hearing the amiliar musical setting in my mind s ear Likeise, hen I hear a purely instrumental perormance o a amiliar hymn tune or chorus, I instantly recall the ords that have ecome inseparaly linked to the music, and I am dran more deeply into the expression o that text It is or that reason that the source music or this series remains the amiliar hymns and songs o the aith As you prepare to perorm these arrangements, I urge you to consider the texts o these great hymns It is my hope that in perormance you ill strive to lead the listener to a genuine orship experience, undistracted y the technical demands or musical devices o the arrangements It is my prayer that you ill ind that these arrangements enhance and expand the expression and intent o the original text settings, and that they ill serve you ell as a tool in your on ministry as a perormer o sacred music Brant Adams Aout the Arranger Brant Adams is perhaps the premier orchestrator or church music pulishers today His numerous cantata and octavo orchestrations may e ound in the catalogs o the leading pulishers in the industry He holds a BM in piano perormance rom Capital University, Columus, Ohio, an MM in music theory rom the Cincinnati CollegeConservatory o Music, and a hd in music theory rom the University o Texas at Austin He currently serves as head o the Department o Music at Oklahoma State University, here he has een a proessor o theory and composition since 197, and department head since 2007 His arrangements in this collection reect his solid understanding o instrumental riting, creative arranging ailities, and a keen aareness o the local church setting shaped y his many years as a practicing church musician Brant and his ie, Ginger, live in Stillater ith their three daughters, Lindsay, Lauren and Lacey 30/3002L2
