HAMISH STUART BAND with special guest MOLLY DUNCAN Gardyne Theatre, Wednesday 15 November, 7.30pm, 18 The original lead singer/guitarist with The Average White Band through all the classic 70s albums, Hamish has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, George Benson, Chaka Khan and for six years, Paul McCartney. In addition to touring with Ringo Starr he leads his own supergroup, joined tonight by Dundee horn, Molly Duncan for a special Festival concert. Expect AWB hits and loads of great funk and soul classics, by a band that generates a truly ferocious groove and never fails to blow off the roof!
JAIMEO BROWN S TRANSCENDENCE: WORK SONGS FERGUS McCREADIE TRIO Dundee Rep, Thursday 16 November, 8pm, 15 Exuberantly inventive jazz - this year s Innovation winner at the Jazz FM Awards. The drummer Jaimeo Brown, from New York, has emerged from a career as a sideman with Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Jay-Z, Robert Glasper, and countless others to produce a completely refreshing new take on jazz (and blues), manifested in his brilliant new album, Work Songs. It s inspired by old recordings, especially those of Afro- American Alabama quilters, that Brown weaves into a new tapestry of the old handstitched emotional sounds, with current black American urban music. His performances are mixed media: images, films, audio recordings, and a kicking band. The Guardian was knocked out at their Ronnie Scott s show earlier this year: a game-changing jazz approach: a unique contemporary jazz venture fuelled by palpably passionate commitment to match its creators imagination and skill. His New York band, Transcendence, features Jaleel Shaw ( saxophone) and Chris Sholar (guitar). Opening the concert, the brilliant Scottish piano trio led by the sensational Fergus McCreadie, play original music - with Stephen Henderson (drums) and David Bowden (bass).
GRAINNE DUFFY BAND / GERRY JABLONSKI BAND Gardyne Theatre, Thursday 16 November, 7.30pm, 15 The hottest blues-rock concert in town! Grainne Duffy blends blues, soul, rock and Celtic influences into emotionally supercharged performances; delivered with a killer combination of passionate and raw vocal strength, range and intensity and guitar virtuosity, Grainne is the real deal (Classic Rock Magazine). Gerry Jablonski Band play high-octane blues, packed with killer riffs and striking solos. They blend blues roots with the influences of Classic Rock, delivering a powerhouse, blistering blues set from one of the tightest and hardest hitting bands on the current scene.
JERRON BLIND BOY PAXTON / THE TROUBLEMAKERS Dundee Rep, Friday 17 November, 8pm, 15 Jerron Blind Boy Paxton is singlehandedly keeping the torch for original 1920s and 1930s acoustic blues alive and has been acclaimed as the most sensational newcomer in the blues in many years. He plays banjo, fiddle, guitar, piano and a handful of other instruments and mixes it all in the true songster tradition: ragtime, old time, country, blues and lots more. The Troublemakers close the show. Blues n Trouble front-men, Tim Elliott and Sandy Tweeddale, together with bassist Lawrie MacMillian play rollicking boogie and blues acoustically, just like the classic blues of the 40s and 50s.
ONE NIGHT IN NEW ORLEANS with ALI AFFLECK S COPPER CATS Gardyne Theatre, Friday 17 November, 7.30pm, 12,50 THIS IS A RIOT! Edinburgh-based American singer Ali Affleck and the acclaimed Copper Cats band transport you to the prohibition era. Good time, swinging vintage jazz with a mix of Tin Pan Alley, the Great American Songbook standards, and loads of traditional New Orleans Jazz and Blues as sung by Bessie Smith, Mildred Bailey, Louis Armstrong and Ma Rainey from stunningly expressive (San Diego Union Tribune) Ali Affleck and her all star band. Music from another time and place, which puts smiles on the faces of the here and now (The Herald). Photo credit: Simon Williams
THE MOUSE OUTFIT The Reading Rooms, Friday 17 November, 8pm, (STANDING, 18+) Fronted by UK hip-hop legend Dr Syntax and verbal acrobats Dubbul O & Ellis Meade, this 9 piece band s horn heavy and funk driven live show combines original grooves with medleys of classic hip-hop, b-boy and funk breaks spiced with jaw-dropping lyrical acrobatics. Their music combines lost classic sounds from the golden age of hip-hop, with soul, jazz and reggae influences. A slick combination of quality samples and fiendish beats. The smorgasbord of soul, jazz, funk and reggae influences some of Britain s most promising emcees (UK Hip Hop). NATHAN BELL HMS Unicorn, Saturday 18 November, 2.30pm, Tennessee-based singer and guitarist, rooted in blues and the music of the southern states, has reinvented himself as an extraordinarily hard hitting star of Americana. His recent album has won 5-star critical acclaim and he stole the show at Celtic Connections earlier this year. Gruff and tender with a poet s voice and a sincere sense of justice, Bell counts Neil Young, Lightnin Hopkins, and Jack London as influences, his songs are stark reflections on the times we are living in, from the personal to the political. Gritty and authentic (The Telegraph) He recalls River-era Springsteen (R2 magazine) Really, really special (Ricky Ross, BBC Radio Scotland) Tremendous (American Roots UK)
BECCA STEVENS BAND / LUCA MANNING & ALAN BENZIE Dundee Rep, Saturday 18 November, 8pm, 15 Acclaimed by The New York Times and heralded as the successor to Joni Mitchell, the Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, band-leader and multi-instrumentalist is renowned for spellbinding performances. Combining personally-charged songwriting and impassioned vocals, she draws upon elements of pop, jazz, and traditional melodies from her native North Carolina to create vivid, adventurous music. A mesmerising Scottish duo open the concert. With Luca Manning a phenomenal new voice with a luminous tone and expressive phrasing and lyrical pianist, Alan Benzie.
A NIGHT WITH ELLA Seonaid Aitken celebrates the songs of Ella Fitzgerald in her centenary year with The Groove Merchant Big Band and special guest Sam West Gardyne Theatre, Saturday 18 November, 7.30pm, 18 Ella Fitzgerald was the greatest vocalist the jazz world has ever heard. Her extraordinary diction, timing, sense of swing and all round joie de vivre meant that her versions of hundreds of great songs were the definitive ones. The songbooks of Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Rogers and Hart, Irving Berlin, and George Gershwin had no finer interpreter. In today s cluttered world, the beauty of hearing these great songs sung with the same clarity and freshness is an unalloyed pleasure, and so it is with Seonaid Aitken, the leading singer of her day, and the perfect one to celebrate Ella and the songs she made famous. Seonaid fronts the superstar young Big Band that s turning all the critics heads, and introduces special guest, Sam West, to join her in celebrating Ella s very special duets with Louis Armstrong. A stunning night of great tunes, great music, and inspiring performances!
