Libin Three Romances, Op. 94 (1849) ROBERT SCHUMANN Born June 8, 1810, in Zwickau, Germany Died July 29, 1856, in Endenich, Germany Approximate length: 13 minutes Robert Schumann suffered throughout his adulthood with depression, emotional crises, and illnesses that profoundly affected his creativity and professional growth. In December 1844 he moved with his family to Dresden, where it was hoped that local doctors and spas might restore his health after a particularly difficult period. The change of scene engendered a new sense of energy and purpose in the composer, and Dresden s popular theaters encouraged him to tackle dramatic projects that he had longed to attempt; Schumann s innovative musical dramas, Genoveva and Manfred, both date from this time. He also wrote a considerable number of songs and choral pieces, and became increasingly engaged in the composition of chamber music. The democratic revolutions that swept across Europe in 1848 and early 1849 seem to have provided the sympathetic Schumann with an additional source of interest and inspiration, even though he and his family were driven from their home for a short while during the 1849 May Uprising in Dresden. He wrote to a friend, For some time now I ve been very busy it s been my most fruitful year it seemed as if the outer storms compelled people to turn inward. Among the nearly 40 works that Schumann produced in this most fruitful year were notable chamber pieces, including the Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano, the Adagio and Allegro for horn and piano, and in December 1849 the three Romanzen ( Romances ) for oboe and piano. There is no evidence that Schumann had a particular player or occasion in mind when he wrote these romances, but he presented them to his wife, Clara, a celebrated pianist, as a Christmas gift. Clara Schumann gave the first private performance of the pieces the following year with François Schubert, a violinist in the Dresden Staatskapelle. Though Schumann insisted to his publisher, Nikolaus Simrock, that the pieces should not be published for violin or clarinet as possible substitutes for oboe, this advice was disregarded. The first public performance of the pieces with the original scoring for oboe took place only years after Schumann s death, in a concert at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig on January 24, 1863 by Emilius Lund and Carl Reinecke. All three romances follow the prescription given by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his 1768 Dictionnaire de Musique: that the romance should be simple, touching, and a bit old-fashioned in

4 Great Performers I Notes on the Program style, with sweet melody and charm. Schumann s romances convey a tension between tranquility and unrest, and are imbued with an intense lyricism. Sonata in G minor, Op. 19 (1901) SERGE RACHMANINOFF Born April 1, 1873, in Oneg, Russia Died March 28, 1943, in Beverly Hills Approximate length: 36 minutes Russian composers at the end of the 19th century produced relatively few chamber works, concentrating instead on such large-scale genres as symphonies and opera; thus the small body of Russian chamber music from that period is especially valuable. Rachmaninoff, most celebrated as composer of two of the genuine war horses of the modern concerto repertory, wrote only a small handful of chamber pieces, including the G-minor Sonata for cello and piano. Dedicated to Anatoly Brandukov, a cellist friend from his student days, the sonata dates from 1901, when the composer was 28 years old. Rachmaninoff himself performed as pianist at the premiere of the work in Moscow, which suggests that the extraordinarily rich and challenging piano part was tailored specifically for his own formidable technique. The sonata s dense accompaniment textures and octave melodies will be familiar to those who know Rachmaninoff s famous concertos; indeed, the Second Piano Concerto was written within the same year as this sonata. The rapid repeated figures and menacing bass line in the second movement are sharply reminiscent of the wild ride in Franz Schubert s famous Erlkönig, a favorite piece with Romantic pianists since Liszt transcribed it for piano. A more gentle, melancholy mood prevails in the Andante, in which colorful shifting harmonies support the lyrical melodic material. The sonata closes with a forceful, dramatic finale that matches the instruments as full partners in bravura playing. Musicologist Kathryn L. Libin teaches music history and theory at Vassar College. 5 Great Performers I Meet the Artists Meet the Artists MARCO_BORGGREVE Harriet Krijgh Vancouver, and New York. One of today s most exciting young cellists, Harriet Krijgh s grace and expressiveness touch her audiences as soon as she is on stage. Her season includes her debuts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons at Symphony Hall in Boston and Carnegie Hall, and with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Robert Spano. She also makes her North American recital debuts in San Francisco, Also this season Ms. Krijgh is featured in a four-concert cycle in Vienna s Musikverein, and she will perform in Amsterdam, The Hague, Budapest, Hamburg, Baden-Baden, and Ludwigshafen. She has performed with orchestras including Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bruckner Orchester Linz, and the Netherlands and Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestras under the batons of Cornelius Meister, Dennis Russell Davies, and Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Other recent highlights include her debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, a tour with Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, and performances with the radio orchestras of Berlin, Hamburg, and Vienna as well as the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. She has participated in festivals at Lucerne, Ghent, and Gstaad, and in the first international Malmö Chamber Music festival in Sweden. A passionate chamber musician, Ms. Krijgh tours with sisters Baiba (violin) and Lauma (piano) Skride and violist Lise Berthaud, as well as with the Signum saxophone quartet. She has performed in London s Wigmore Hall with the Pavel Haas Quartet. In June she assumes the role of artistic director of the International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht, succeeding Janine Jansen in the position. In 2012 Ms. Krijgh founded the Harriet & Friends festival, which takes place every summer in Burg Feistritz, Austria. In she was chosen as a Rising Star of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). Ms. Krijgh plays a Giovanni Paolo Maggini cello from 1620, which is generously loaned to her privately.

6 Great Performers I Meet the Artists GREGOR TITZE Magda Amara As a soloist and chamber musician, pianist Magda Amara is a regular guest on many international stages. She has performed in venues such as Vienna s Musikverein and Konzert - haus, Theater an der Wien, Mozarteum Salzburg, Amsterdam s Concertgebouw, Hamburg s Laeisz - halle, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Alte Oper Frankfurt, and Tonhalle Zurich. Ms. Amara has been invited to many festivals, including Dvořákova Praha, Le Sion Festival, Festival de Radio France, and Neuberger Kulturtage, and enjoyed successful collaborations with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, North Netherlands Orchestra, Cairo Symphony Orchestra, and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra of Brno. As a chamber musician, Ms. Amara has collaborated with Julian Rachlin, Dora Schwarzberg, and Stefan Vladar, as well as members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics. She shares a very close musical relationship with Harriet Krijgh, with whom she has recorded two CDs, released by the Austrian label Capriccio in 2013 and Her season includes concerts at the Lucerne Festival, the Concertgebouw, Musikverein, and elsewhere. Ms. Amara was born in Moscow and graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Sergei Dorensky. She completed her studies with Stefan Vladar at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, and has placed at 11 national and international competitions, including first prize at the Jeunesses Musicales and Ennio Porrino Piano Competitions, and third prize at the Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition. Lincoln Center s Great Performers Initiated in 1965, Lincoln Center s Great Performers series offers classical and contemporary music performances from the world s outstanding symphony orchestras, vocalists, chamber ensembles, and recitalists. One of the most significant music presentation series in the world, Great Performers runs from October through June with offerings in Lincoln Center s David Geffen Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Walter Reade Theater, and other performance spaces around New York City. From symphonic masterworks, lieder recitals, and Sunday morning coffee concerts to films and groundbreaking productions specially commissioned by Lincoln Center, Great Performers offers a rich spectrum of programming throughout the season.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) serves three primary roles: presenter of artistic programming, national leader in arts and education and community relations, and manager of the Lincoln Center campus. A presenter of more than 3,000 free and ticketed events, performances, tours, and educational activities annually, LCPA offers 15 programs, series, and festivals including American Songbook, Great Performers, Lincoln Center Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Midsummer Night Swing, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and the White Light Festival, as well as the Emmy Award winning Live From Lincoln Center, which airs nationally on PBS. 8 Arts in the Middle Students from South Bronx Academy for Applied Media Several studies have examined how exposure to the arts in middle school strongly impact a student s social skills and development as well as likelihood to graduate from high school. In 2013, Lincoln Center Education launched a pilot program in partnership with the New York City Department of Education aimed at this specific issue. Called Arts in the Middle, it focuses on arts education as a potential catalyst for improved student engagement and success in and out of school, as well as parent engagement, teaching practices, and school and community culture. Through Arts in the Middle, Lincoln Center Education is working with more than a dozen underserved New York City middle schools that have little to no arts programs. LCE is supporting schools with efforts to hire a part-time or full-time arts teacher, in addition to deploying its own roster of skilled teaching artists to help in the classroom and provide professional development for teachers and family engagement. Early results of these efforts to support educators and students are showing positive results. Metis Associates, hired by LCE to evaluate short- and longterm effectiveness of the program, has documented increased parent engagement, which can have an impact on student success. Some schools have also noted that students are becoming vibrant and vocal participants when the arts are integrated into classrooms. If results continue in this direction, Lincoln Center Education hopes to develop an adaptable model of the program that can be disseminated nationally to bring arts education to underserved communities. As our partnership with the New York City Department of Education continues to grow, so, too, does our commitment to supporting whole communities by providing thoughtful programs for students and families around New York City s five boroughs, said Russell Granet.
