3 Welcome to Mostly Mozart I am pleased to welcome you to the 49th Mostly Mozart Festival, our annual celebration of the innovative and inspiring spirit of our namesake composer. This summer, in addition to a stellar roster of guest conductors and soloists, we are joined by composer-in-residence George Benjamin, a leading contemporary voice whose celebrated opera Written on Skin makes its U.S. stage premiere. This landmark event continues our tradition of hearing Mozart afresh in the context of the great music of our time. Under the inspired baton of Renée and Robert Belfer Music Director Louis Langrée, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra delights this year with the Classical repertoire that is its specialty, in addition to Beethoven s joyous Seventh Symphony and Haydn s triumphant Creation. Guest appearances include maestro Cornelius Meister making his New York debut; Edward Gardner, who also leads the Academy of Ancient Music in a Mendelssohn program on period instruments; and Andrew Manze with violinist Joshua Bell in an evening of Bach, Mozart, and Schumann. Other preeminent soloists include Emanuel Ax, Matthias Goerne, and festival newcomers Sol Gabetta and Alina Ibragimova, who also perform intimate recitals in our expanded Little Night Music series. And don t miss returning favorite Emerson String Quartet and the International Contemporary Ensemble, our artists-inresidence, as well as invigorating pre-concert recitals and lectures, a panel discussion, and a film on Haydn. 5 I Meet the Director Meet the Director Phil Grabsky Phil Grabsky and his company Seventh Art Productions are behind such films as In Search of Beethoven, In Search of Mozart, Muhammad Ali Through the Eyes of the World, Escape from Luanda, and The Boy Mir Ten Years in Afghanistan. Both In Search of Mozart and In Search of Beethoven played in Australian cinemas for months and entered the list of top-grossing documentaries. Working with co-director David Bickerstaff, Mr. Grabsky also co-directed and produced Making War Horse, a film following the production of the theater hit War Horse, and The Making of Swallows and Amazons Bristol Old Vic Sets Sail. Both films were featured on Channel 4 in the UK. Mr. Grabsky also made the world s first 3D visual arts film, Tim Marlow on British Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts. In addition to In Search of Haydn, Mr. Grabsky recently completed In Search of Chopin, as well as the anticipated BBC film Concerto A Beethoven Journey, featuring pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. Mr. Grabsky is regularly involved as a judge for the Emmy, BAFTA, and Grierson awards and has won numerous awards himself, including Royal Television Society awards for Best Director and services to television, as well as a Voice of the Listener and Viewer award for services to education. He also created the arts brand Exhibition on Screen, which brings major art exhibitions and the stories of the galleries and artists to cinemas and televisions worldwide. Film Society of Lincoln Center s Sound + Vision series The Film Society of Lincoln Center is proud to present the third annual edition of Sound + Vision a high-energy documentary series exploring a range of musical artists, genres, and styles from around the world offering premieres and retrospectives, interactive concerts, and Q&As with musicians, directors, and more, taking place July 29 August 7. This year s subjects span the undersung heroes of Latin boogaloo and Jamaican ska, James Szalapski s 1976 country-music classic Heartworn Highways a train full of today s greatest musicians and visual artists on a cross-country journey to create unforgettable performances and a psychedelic visual companion to the collaboration between Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Ariel Kalma. Julien Temple, the legendary documentarian, music-video director, and fellow traveler of seminal English rockers like the Clash, the Kinks, and the Sex Pistols, will be in attendance for a rare retrospective highlighting his expansive body of work, along with the premiere of his latest documentary, the critically acclaimed The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson. The series also features three live multimedia performances by Talibam!, Preston Spurlock & Friends, and Foxes in Fiction in our Amphitheater. The

6 2015 edition promises to be nothing less than a feast for the eyes and ears, as well as a testament to the enduring and mutually enriching relationship between cinema and music. Mostly Mozart Festival Lincoln Center s Mostly Mozart Festival America s first indoor summer music festival was launched as an experiment in Called Midsummer Serenades: A Mozart Festival, its first two seasons were devoted exclusively to the music of Mozart. Now a New York institution, Mostly Mozart continues to broaden its focus to include works by Mozart s predecessors, contemporaries, and related successors. In addition to concerts by the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, Mostly Mozart now includes concerts by the world s outstanding period-instrument ensembles, chamber orchestras and ensembles, and acclaimed soloists, as well as opera productions, dance, film, latenight performances, and visual art installations. Contemporary music has become an essential part of the festival, embodied in annual artists-inresidence, including Osvaldo Golijov, John Adams, Kaija Saariaho, Pierre- Laurent Aimard, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. Among the many artists and ensembles who have had long associations with the festival are Joshua Bell, Christian Tetzlaff, Itzhak Perlman, Emanuel Ax, Garrick Ohlsson, Stephen Hough, Osmo Vänskä, the Emerson String Quartet, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Mark Morris Dance Group. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) serves three primary roles: presenter of artistic programming, national leader in arts and education and community relations, and manager of the Lincoln Center campus. A presenter of more than 3,000 free and ticketed events, performances, tours, and educational activities annually, LCPA offers 15 programs, series, and festivals, including American Songbook, Great Performers, Lincoln Center Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Midsummer Night Swing, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and the White Light Festival, as well as the Emmy Award winning Live From Lincoln Center, which airs nationally on PBS. As manager of the Lincoln Center campus, LCPA provides support and services for the Lincoln Center complex and the 11 resident organizations. In addition, LCPA led a $1.2 billion campus renovation, completed in October 2012.
