1 Dear Academy Members: June 26, 2016 We are now under two weeks away from the start of SoMMA 2016 and everything is shaping up very well. With 102 campers registered, this is going to be one of the largest ensembles ever at SoMMA! A special note that the check in time on Saturday, July 9th is from 9 11:00am. Please allow yourself enough time to register, drop off your stuff in your dorm room, audition, and be on time for the 11:30am All Academy Meeting (open to parents) in Corthell Concert Hall. When you arrive on Saturday morning, you will play a short audition for seating in the ensembles (concert band/jazz/and chamber music) Please have a section of a solo or an etude prepared. You may be also asked to play a scale showing the range of your instrument and do a quick sight reading. You are all encouraged to audition with your chosen piece to perform on the SoMMA Student Solo Recital. We will provide a professional pianist so please bring the piano accompaniment to the audition. (Please understand that not everyone who auditions for the solo recital can be selected to perform.) 2 SoMMA Private Lessons Private lessons are optional Lessons are taught by full time or Artist faculty at the USM School of Music We recommend only one lesson per instruction area; maximum of three different areas (i.e. a camper could take one flute lesson, one piano lesson, and one conducting lesson) Lessons are $40 for a 1 hour Lessons occur during rehearsals or camper free time Lesson Areas: Flute Oboe Bassoon Clarinet Sax (classical and/or jazz) Horn Trumpet Trombone Baritone/Euphonium Tuba Percussion (classical and/or jazz) Harp Piano (classical and/or jazz) Guitar (classical and/or jazz) Conducting Composition If you are interested in taking an optional private lesson with a USM faculty member while at SoMMA, please fill out the section below and bring your checkbook, or cash, to registration on the first day. 3 June 29, 2016 Dear Southern Maine Music Academy Parents & Participants, I hope that this letter finds you well and anticipating the Southern Maine Music Academy, which will be held on the Gorham Campus of the University of Southern Maine beginning on Saturday, July 9, Check- in will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. in the lounge of the Upperclass Hall. In order to better prepare you for the Academy, this guideline has been provided for your use when packing: Required Items: Alarm clock Sleeping bag or blankets & sheets (twin) Pillow and pillowcase Bath towels/washcloths Soap Shampoo Toothbrush/paste Comb, brush, personal items Easy care summer clothes Swimsuit Sunblock Sweater or sweatshirt (rain coat?) Dress up clothing for concert, such as: Men: nice slacks and shoes, Sport shirt and tie Women: nice summer dress Swim wear and sunscreen (Insect repellant?) Your instrument!! (Be sure that your instrument is in good working condition) *****Metal Folding Stand***** Extra reeds, oils, etc. (depending on your instrument) Pencils, paper Any solo work you wish to work on or perform, any etude book you re working on Optional Items: Sports equipment (Frisbee, tennis racket, etc) Camera and film Spending Money

4 Please put a label on everything you bring! Make a checklist that you can use when packing to go home. Many things that are forgotten have no way of finding their way back to you. On Wednesday, we will have a beach day and camp dance! (schedule to be discussed at camp). Thursday evening will end with a popular Ice Cream Social for all participants to enjoy after such an extremely busy week; and on Saturday evening, we plan on having a Pizza Party for your last night at camp. The final concert by the participants will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the McCormack Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School. We hope that your family and friends will be able to join us for this exciting conclusion to the program. The performance is free and open to the public. A Special Note to Commuter Students: (Commuters should plan to arrive by 7:45 am each day, and plan to stay until the end of the last concert of the day (approximately 9:30 or 10 p.m.). There will be a sign-in, sign-out board for commuter students located in the Corthell Hall Lobby. Students will be required to sign in and out each day. On Saturday, July 9 th, you should plan on checking in sometime between 9:00am 10:30am (just like the resident students) in the lounge of the Upperclass Hall. Once you check in, you will then proceed to the Corthell Concert Hall for your audition. There will be a meeting for all Academy participants and faculty beginning at 11:30am, also in Corthell Hall. Remember to allow yourself enough time for the audition and still be on time for the meeting! Lunch and dinner will be provided for you by the Academy, but you should plan to have breakfast at home each day. We hope that you will attend all of the evening concerts planned during the Academy. They are planned so that your musical experience during the program is that much broader and richer. Generally, concerts end between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Also, please plan to stay for the Get Acquainted Session from 7:00pm 7:50pm on the first day of camp (Saturday). SECTIONAL AUDITION: Go to Corthell Hall for your auditions (Auditions are for seating in the academy ensembles and not for exclusion from the Academy). If you want to be considered for the Solo Recital, play some of that piece for your audition. 7 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE SAFETY TIPS Lock the door to your room, carry your keys with you and don t lend/give your keys to anyone. Exterior doors on all residence halls are locked at all times for your safety. Do not prop exterior doors and do not let non-residents into residence halls. Know which staff members are on duty by checking the duty information listed on the Resident Assistant Office door in the lobby of each residence hall. Campus police are located in Gorham in the lower level of Upton Hall and in the Steego Building on the Portland Campus. For emergencies, dial 911 or for nonemergency business, dial (if on campus, just dial 5211). Emergency phones are located in the lobby of each resident hall and under the blue lights on the Gorham and Portland campuses. Fire Safety: Locate and review the fire evacuation plan on each floor. In the event of a fire alarm, leave the building immediately. Do not tamper with fire safety equipment, it is dangerous and against the law. Avoid walking alone after dark. Campus escorts are available by calling (if on campus, dial 5211). Report suspicious behavior and individuals to police or staff members. Remember USM staff are ready and willing to answer your questions and to help you out - all you have to do is ask.

8 Directions to the University of Southern Maine Gorham Campus From the Maine Turnpike (I-95) North and South Take I-295 south to Exit 1 (Maine Mall Road). Exit right to Route 114/Maine Mall Road and immediately bear left. At the traffic light, turn left onto Payne Road. At the fifth traffic light, take a right onto Route 114 north. Follow Route 114 north for 6.5 miles to Gorham center, the intersection of Routes 25 and 114. Continue straight on Route 114 and take the first left after the traffic light onto College Avenue. The main entrance to the Gorham campus is on the right- then follow the camp signs to available parking for academy check-in. Directions to the McCormack Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School 41 Morrill Avenue Gorham, Maine From the Maine Turnpike (I-95): If you are traveling from the north or south take the Maine Turnpike to Exit 47 (Route 25/Westbrook Arterial). Follow Route 25 West for approximately 6.5 miles into Gorham. At Gorham center, the intersection of Routes 25 and 114, turn left onto Route 114. There will be an Amato s Italian shop on your left and Gorham House of Pizza on your right. You will pass the Gorham Memorial Public Library on your right; turn right onto Morrill Avenue and follow to Gorham High School on the right (approx. ½ mile). Turn right into the school entrance, drive around the school to the back. You will see the entrance for the performance center at the back of the building.
