After waiting many years to complete his first symphony, Brahms produced his second symphony almost overnight. The lilting Symphony No. 2 is generally regarded as the most genial and relaxed of Brahms four works in the genre, but its finale is jubilant and electrifying. The program opens with Brahms ebullient Academic Festival Overture and 26-year-old South Korean violinist Jinjoo Cho, winner of the 2014 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, plays Stravinsky s neoclassical Violin Concerto. *Coffee Classics performances feature one hour of music selected from the weekend s program. Classics Ottorino Respighi: Pini di Roma (Pines of Rome) Music Director Laureate Michael Christie returns to conduct Ottorino Respighi s symphonic tone poems Fountains of Rome, romancing Rome s famous fountains at different times of the day, and Pines of Rome, depicting pine trees in different locations in Rome. The program also features Verdi s powerful Overture to his opera La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny) and the world premiere of Symphony No. 5 by Daron Hagen, recipient of the 2014 American Academy of Arts and UNEXPECTED COMMUNITY The Phoenix Symphony believes that music can benefit everyone. That s why we put our emphasis on the community. We visit schools, homeless shelters and hospitals throughout the Valley and bring the gift of music. MASTERFUL Mozart January 8, :00 am* January 8, :30 pm January 9, :30 pm Tito Muñoz, conductor Shai Wosner, piano Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Overture to Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), K. 492 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Concerto No. 20 in D minor for Piano & Orchestra, K. 466 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Serenade) K. 525 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major, K. 543 Maestro Muñoz presents a rare treat of an all-mozart program with pieces composed during the prolific and final years of Mozart s short life. Symphony No. 39, with its warm yet dramatic tone, is sublimely beautiful. Internationally recognized pianist Shai Wosner, a BBC New Generation Artist, will make his Arizona debut performing the enigmatic Piano Concerto No. 20 in a program that also features the delightful and popular Eine kleine Nachtmusik and the whimsical overture to the operatic comedy Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro). BEETHOVEN S Symphony No. 7 Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts January 21, :30 pm* January 22, :00 am** January 22, :30 pm January 23, :30 pm Tito Muñoz, conductor Ah Young Hong, soprano The Phoenix Symphony Chorus Classics Andrew Norman: Unstuck Francis Poulenc: Gloria Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 in A Major, op. 92 Tito Muñoz brings a second offering of Beethoven to The Phoenix Symphony s Classics season with Symphony No. 7, which Beethoven felt was one of his best works. Primarily known for the hypnotic and beautiful second movement that has been featured in many film scores including the Academy Award-Winning The King s Speech, the symphony is both stirring and inspirational. Continuing to introduce patrons of The Phoenix Symphony to new young composers, Maestro Muñoz opens the program with Andrew Norman s new kinetic work, Unstuck, which musically documents his ability to overcome writer s block. Norman, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in Music and composer for famed artists like Emanuel Ax, is recognized as one of the most compelling musical voices of his generation. 6 RAVEL S Boléro HAYDN S Nelsonmesse Classics March 4, :30 pm March 5, :30 pm Andrew Grams, conductor Pascal Roge, piano Hector Berlioz: Overture to Le Corsaire, op. 21 Camille Saint-Saëns: Concerto No. 2 in G minor for Piano & Orchestra, op. 22 Maurice Ravel: Ma Mère l Oye (Mother Goose) Maurice Ravel: Boléro One of The Phoenix Symphony s favorite guest conductors, Andrew Grams, returns to lead Maurice Ravel s most famous work, Boléro. The crowd pleasing Boléro delights through the longest-sustained single crescendo of any orchestral work and inspires a visceral and sensual response. Pascal Roge, whose name is synonymous with the best piano performance of the French repertoire in the world today, also joins The Phoenix Symphony playing Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 2. March 18, :00 am* March 18, :30 pm March 19, :30 pm Tito Muñoz, conductor The Phoenix Symphony Chorus Sean Shepherd: Magiya Alberto Ginastera: Variaciones concertantes, op. 23 Joseph Haydn: Mass No. 11 in D minor, Nelsonmesse (Lord Nelson Mass)** Marice Ravel: Boléro (only in March 18, :00 am performance) Tito Muñoz continues his creative leadership with this diverse program. Arguably Haydn s greatest single composition, Nelsonmesse, or Missa in Agustiis, is one of six masses Haydn wrote late in his career. Transporting listeners from the greatest depths of despair to great joy, this choral masterpiece is not to be missed. Featuring another young American composer, the program begins with Magiya by Sean Shepherd, an exciting composer of the new American generation, according to The New York Times. Magiya, or Magic, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the BBC, is a complex fanfare full of urgency and drive. The program also includes the exciting Variaciones concertantes by Ginastera featuring multiple virtuosic solos. *Coffee Classics performances feature one hour of music selected from the weekend s program. **Ravel s Boléro will be performed in lieu of Nelsonmesse for the Coffee Classics performance. Missy Mazzoli: River Rouge Transfiguration Leonard Bernstein: Serenade (After Plato s Symposium ) Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 43 Continuing to weave new American artistic works into the season, Tito Muñoz opens the evening with a composition by Missy Mazzoli, the recipient of four ASCAP Young Composer Awards and a Fulbright Grant, who has been heralded as one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York by The New York Times. Mazzoli, who is influenced by minimalism, 19th-century Romanticism, techno and indie rock, has composed a gritty and complex work. The concert then features another New York and American favorite, Leonard Bernstein s unique and inventive violin concerto, Serenade, featuring the Arizona debut of violinist and International Tchaikovsky Competition winner, Jennifer Koh, known for her dazzling virtuosity. The program crests with the Symphony of Independence, Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 2. This creative program opens with Thomas Ades Dances from Powder Her Face, music from his opera which musically retells the downfall of Britain s Dirty Duchess, Margaret, Duchess of Argyll. Martina Filjak, winner of the first prize in the Cleveland International Piano Competition and called a pianist to watch by The New York Times, makes her Arizona debut with this powerhouse program. Garnering international praise for her poetic passion and magnetic stage presence, Filjak will perform the beautiful and rich Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2. The program culminates with Dvořák s Symphony No. 8, often called his Pastoral, a work that stands apart from his other symphonic works and is one that is his most bucolic and idyllic. *This concert is part of the Scottsdale Series and can be purchased in the Scottsdale Series Subscription or individually. **Coffee Classics performances feature one hour of music selected from the weekend s program.

The program begins with Igor Stravinsky s lovesick mind and complete obsession with Irish actress Harriet Smithson. masterful Scherzo a la Russe with its lively and dancing spirit and features Berlioz s famous drama is epic in size, with its large orchestration and the return of Amit Peled for Shostakovich s popular and challenging Cello his larger-than-life life fantasy world. 9 Classics THE EARTH An HD Odyssey The Earth An HD Odyssey, is truly an out-of-this-world concert experience. The multi-sensory event showcases classical blockbusters with an arresting multi-media presentation. The Phoenix Symphony s performance of John Adams Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Strauss epic Also sprach Zarathustra, featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey, is complemented by striking and majestic high definition images taken from NASA missions in Earth s orbit. This event is not to be missed. 10 TRIBUTE to the BRAVE Pops October 2, :30 pm October 3, :30 pm October 4, :00 pm Jacomo Bairos, conductor The Phoenix Symphony kicks off its 2015/16 APS Pops series with a dynamic multi-media experience in tribute to all who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy and those who revere our country s great history as we mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the 75th anniversary of World War I and the 50th anniversary of World War II. Westwater Arts returns to Phoenix from its acclaimed 2012 Centennial performance of the Grand Canyon Suite with powerful symphonic photochoreography using hundreds of archival photographs projected on screens above the orchestra. The first photographic essay, The Eternal Struggle, is a poignant glimpse into what it was like to live and govern during the Civil War set to the words of Abraham Lincoln through the incomparable music of Aaron Copland s Lincoln Portrait. Next, The Symphony performs No Man s Land, commemorating World War I and the collision between centuries-old traditions and the emergence of modern warfare with the music of Shostakovich s Symphony No. 5. Then, through Citizen Soldier, The Phoenix Symphony reflects on the more than 100 million men and women who participated in history s most widespread conflict, World War II, set to Barber s Second Essay for Orchestra. Finishing out the program are inspirational and patriotic tributes in support of our men and women in uniform.

From the Toy Story trilogy to The Incredibles and Up, Pixar Animation Studios has forever impacted filmmaking and given audiences of all ages some of the most beloved characters in cinematic history. The Phoenix Symphony presents Pixar in Concert, with visually stunning film clips projected on screen while The Phoenix Symphony plays the memorable scores from each of Pixar s movies, including its latest release, Monsters University. Hear The Phoenix Symphony perform highlights from over 60 years of John Williams scores, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Schindler s List, Born on the Fourth of July and many more. UNEXPECTED IMPACT The Phoenix Symphony believes in educating the next generation of music lovers. That s why we created Symphony for the Schools. These concerts are specially performed for school-age children and cover everything from anti-bullying to the history of our great state.

Bigger than the Beatles in Australia, Smokey Robinson discovered this amazing group of Motown singers and brought them to America, where they quickly gained fame as openers for chart toppers like Celine Dion and Michael Jackson. Currently playing to sold out houses at the famed Venetian Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, Human Nature brings their amazing vocal harmonies to Phoenix for the first time. These four talented performers sing their own multi-platinum hits and the best of Motown in a show that is sure to not only bring back memories but also create new ones in a special way. This multi-talented star has effortlessly transitioned between stage, television and film. She received a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for her work on Pushing Daisies and a Tony for her performance in You re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, as well as nominations for her roles in Fox s Glee and Broadway s Wicked. As a veteran of the concert stage, Kristin has performed to sold out crowds in concert halls across the country.
