3 MUSIC PROGRAM 2017 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Emmanuel College Music program for Music is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn team work, individual discipline, and gain a musical understanding and appreciation. Learning should be fun and our program here at Emmanuel strives to learn through enjoyment. Our program is growing one as more and more students join in and make great music together. Music is for everyone and no matter the age or the level, there is something for every child to be a part of in the Emmanuel Music program. As you look through the Music Handbook, please take a minute to gather the necessary information pertaining to your child(ren). There is information about Music Curriculum, Instrumental Music, Choral Music and the Co-Curricular Tuition program. Also included in this Handbook is the 2017 Performance Calendar. This is an important document; please look through each Major event to see which of these will relate to you and your family. Many of our performances will be held in the Emmanuel Theatre so keep an eye out for upcoming events. Some of the major events this year will be the 2017 Music Camp, the Emmanuel Concerto Festival, Night under the Stars, Jazz in the Theatre, the annual Gold Coast Eisteddfod, Presentation evenings and the end of year concerts for the Music Tutors. Most major events happening in our theatre will need to be booked through the Flexischools Booking system. 6 MUSIC CURRICULUM PREP-12 OVERVIEW Music in the classroom at Emmanuel College is an exciting subject to be a part of. The latest innovations in music technology are available to our students, alongside a curriculum which covers a vast range of music styles and interests. An educationally excellent model of sequential curriculum development is designed to cater for a wide range of interests whilst thoroughly educating students in the classics and world music styles. Below is a brief outline of what to expect at each year level in classroom music. Prep to Year 2 Kodaly based singing Young students naturally possess an innate fascination for music and movement. The P- 2 music program at Emmanuel College nurtures this interest, by developing foundational skills and understanding in: sight singing, notation, rhythm, melody, expression, tone, colour, style, harmony and form. These fundamental skills developed in P-2 are critical for the student s future success in music appreciation and performance. Year 3 - Recorder Building upon the foundational skills developed in P-2, students in Year 3 apply these skills in performance on the recorder. Skills in reading and writing music notation are enhanced further through the practical use of an instrument as well as the ability to perform music on the instrument. Year 4 Keyboard and Ukulele Students further develop musical skills in melody and harmony, and apply these in singing various songs both aurally and visually. Students also have the opportunity to learn some basic keyboard and ukulele skills through the repertoire studied. Performance skills are also gained from various in-class performances. Year 5 Instrumental Music Program The Year 5 Instrumental Music Program at Emmanuel College is an exciting opportunity for all students to learn the skills of playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument as well as performing in an ensemble. Students receive weekly small group tuition from one of our professional instrument tutors, as well as rehearsing weekly and performing in either the Year Five Concert Band or the Year Five String Orchestra. 6

7 Year 6 Music During Year 6, music students are given the opportunity to learn music through singing and through playing of various instruments, including their own. Students will have the opportunity to perform both solo and group work, as well as perform their own compositions. Year 7 Music Year 7 music is introduced as an elective. For this reason we have written new program which will focus around music and technology. Students will be introduced to programs such as musiccraft and Muse score. They will also start to learn how to record music and to synchronize their scores with live film. We are very excited about this new unit and look forward to great results. Year 8 Music Students learn to hone their musical skills in composing and in performing. They are also introduced to score reading and learning how to analyse and to appreciate different styles of music. Composing is a key ingredient in our music program, and students continue to learn how to compose music for their own instrument as well as music using technology. In Term 4 of Year 8, music students have the opportunity to compose and perform their own work in a group of 3-4 students. Year 9 Music Students study the units Orchestral Music, The Musical World Music and Music for Thinkers During the course of the year students increase their knowledge of score reading, how to analyse music, how to compose an instrumental work and how to write a piece of music for film. They also perform solo on the instrument of their choice along with participating in several group performances such as singing and a percussion ensemble. Year 10 Music Students study the units Jazz Bebop and Beyond, Protest Music, 20 th Century and Australian Music and Film Music. During the course of the year students increase their knowledge of score reading, how to analyse music, how to compose an instrumental work and how to write a piece of music for film. They also perform solo on the instrument of their choice along with participating in several group performances such as singing and a percussion ensemble. 7

8 Year 11 Music Students study the units The Documentation of Sound, The Purposes of Music and Music of the Spirit. During these units, students continue to hone their skills in score reading, how to analyse music both aurally and visually, and how to compose in a number of genres and styles, including learning how to transpose and modulate. Students also participate in solo and group performances throughout the year. Year 12 Music Students study the units Traditions, Innovators, and Making a Musical Statement. Through these units, students will consolidate their score reading knowledge, learn how to analyse music both aurally and visually and how to compose in a number of genres and styles. Students also participate in solo and group performances throughout the year. Year 11/12 Music Extension Music Extension is designed to allow students who already possess a high level in performance, composing or musicology, an opportunity to focus on their craft and further enhance their skills. During the course of the year the student will complete investigative assignments related to their specialisation, and also participate in major solo or ensemble performances, composing or musicological research. 8

9 CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC Emmanuel College administers a specialised Co-Curricular Music Program which provides music tuition in areas outside the normal curriculum. The Program is made available across both Junior and Senior school at the College for your convenience. The Co-Curricular Music Program is designed to help complete the total education of your child. This can be in at least three ways: by achieving new skills and the positive effect this can have on the individual by being involved in arts activities with other students and the positive social interaction this involves, not only at school but for a lifetime by commencing a worthwhile educational activity at school which may lead to tertiary music studies and a profession. Strings and Piano tuition are offered from early years onwards. Guitar and Voice from Year 4 Percussion, Brass and Woodwind instruments from Year 5 onwards only. Lesson length and fees Fees are paid on enrolment and prior to the ensuing semester. There are 32 weeks of tuition each Year - 16 weeks in Semester 1 and 16 weeks in Semester 2. 10 THE ENROLMENT PROCESS New enrolment applicants will need to complete and return the registration form with the signed terms and conditions to the College cashier, with payment. You may also fax the form with credit card details to the Business Office on Application forms are also available from the College Administration and Performing Arts Administration office. The easiest way to enrol is online. See Unless otherwise notified, existing students already enrolled in the program will be automatically re-enrolled into the new year and will be invoiced in accordance with their enrolment. Please note that every effort has been made on behalf of the College to ensure an easy payment process. Inclusion within the program cannot be guaranteed for enrolments received after the closure date. Automatic re-enrolment applies in Semester 2 unless otherwise indicated. Terms and conditions One semester s fees (two complete school terms) to be paid IN FULL on registration. Under normal circumstances, there is no refund of fees for withdrawing from the Program during the Semester. Absences It is the responsibility of the student or parent to notify the relevant tutor prior to 7.30am on the lesson day if the student is unable to attend a lesson due to illness. 24 hours notice must be given for any other planned absence. This can be done via to the College or by phoning the Performing Arts Administrator on In case of School excursions and carnivals these lessons will be made-up during or at the completion of the semester. The Tutor s home telephone number may be obtained directly from the tutor. Non-attendance, although at School: These lessons are the responsibility of the student. The Tutor will not be responsible for lessons missed in this manner. Students are expected to apologise to their tutor for nonattendance at lessons. 10

11 Extended absence: The Performing Arts Administrator must be notified, in writing, of an extended absence (eg overseas holiday) so arrangements can be made concerning fees. It is expected that parents will maintain appropriate contact with the tutor in regard to the progress of their child. Examinations, Concerts, Studio recordings and Reporting Regular feedback regarding your student s co-curricular/vocal progress is essential for sustaining development in music. The most common communication method between tutor and parents/students is through the Practice Journal which all students receive at the start of the year. In addition to this the College provides two opportunities for formal feedback throughout the year at the end of each Semester. One of these methods will be a formal report and the other will be either a concert or studio recording performed by the student. The process and order for reporting is at the discretion of the tutor. 11

13 ENSEMBLE INCLUSION POLICIES At Emmanuel College we endeavor to have the correct balance of performance opportunities needed for the measured musical growth of individuals. In light of this we place students, assessed but unauditioned, into instrumental musical groups which will most suit this purpose and be in line with the individual s musical ambitions and choices. Some choirs in Junior and Senior School follow an audition process. The following information outlines requirements for inclusion in all ensembles. Junior School All students in Intermediate Stage Band and Junior Concert Band must be in either single, paired or grouped (Year 6 only) tuition within the Emmanuel Co- Curricular Music Program or in a reputable outside program. Students involved in Junior String Orchestra must be in single or paired tuition. Participation in the Year 5 Concert Band/String Orchestra, Year 4 String Orchestra and Year 3 String Orchestra is according to the relevant program requirements. Inclusion in Junior School Choirs is dependent upon application and audition. Senior School All students wishing to perform in a band or orchestra in the Senior School must receive weekly individual or paired tuition on their chosen instrument either at the College or with a reputable outside program with the only exception being pianists, who may play tuned percussion whilst only studying the piano. Students are strongly encouraged to take Curriculum Music as a subject, and will be chosen firstly from these classes and at the discretion of the music staff. To participate in the Emmanuel Chorus or Grace Notes, students are encouraged to have private singing lessons and/or take Curriculum Music as a subject. INSTRUMENT STORAGE Day and overnight storage is available for all musical instruments. The two storage rooms are located on the top level of the Performing Arts Centre next to the Junior Music Room. Students are to store instruments neatly on the shelves provided. It is expected that students will take instruments home to practise, however storage overnight is acceptable if a student needs to have their instrument at school the next day. It is imperative instruments are taken home over all holiday breaks. 13

14 Because the College provides appropriate storage facilities we will not take responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen instruments if they are left in any place other than a storage room. PRACTICE The student s tutor will give the student guidelines on how often and how long to practise as well as what to practise. A general rule is that beginners should practise 20 minutes per day / 5 days per week. More advanced students should do no less than 30 minutes and often up to an hour or two per day. To make the most progress with the least effort, an individual practise time should be organised with reference to the College Practise Journal and should include the following Goal setting Set practise times Warm up/fundamentals Technical work Pieces Band/Orchestra repertoire Evaluation to guide the next practise session DRESS STANDARDS The professional appearance of our performance groups is of utmost importance in public concert situations in order to ensure that the reputation of Emmanuel College is maintained. The standard dress for every Emmanuel College music ensemble is the complete College formal uniform including ties for boys and navy blue stockings and hair ties for girls. The wearing of the College blazer is mandatory for students in Years when performing in the Senior Wind Symphony, Emmanuel Chorus and Senior String Orchestra; The Emmanuel Big Band members wear black formal slacks and shirt for boys, and black evening dress with stockings for girls. Shoes (black) must be polished. 14

15 ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS Being a member of one of our music ensembles means being committed to the group for the full year. Selection into ensembles is a task we take seriously and each student in a group has an extremely important part to play in fact the whole group relies upon the 100% commitment of every individual. As such, students are asked to carefully consider their commitment to music groups. Withdrawals from the groups are generally not accepted throughout the year. 100% attendance at rehearsals and performances is expected. Acceptable absences would be for illness, family bereavement or approved school activities. Missing rehearsals or performances is not acceptable without written notification from parents. Students may receive detentions for not following correct procedures. The Performance Calendar is published from the beginning of the year to enable music ensemble members to arrange other activities in advance. BAND PROGRAM Emmanuel College offers participation in quality ensembles to all students having wind, brass or percussion lessons either within or outside the school. There is currently one concert band and a stage band available in the Junior School. In the Senior School there are two concert bands, four stage bands and the Emmanuel Symphony Orchestra. All band players in the school are encouraged to actively participate in these groups as we believe ensemble playing is a valuable part of the overall musical and social development of the student. Year 5 Instrumental Music Program Emmanuel College offers a unique opportunity for all students in Year 5 to study a wind, brass, percussion or string instrument as part of the Music Curriculum. Students study in small groups with our professional instrument tutors and also play in either the Year 5 Concert Band or Year 5 String Orchestra. Students generally advance from this program to play in the Junior School Concert band or String orchestra in Year 6. 18 STRINGS PROGRAM Emmanuel College offers quality ensembles to all students having strings lessons within and outside the school. There are currently four String orchestras in the Junior School, two Senior School String orchestras and the Emmanuel Symphony Orchestra. For more advanced players, we also have the Junior String Quartet, a Senior String Quartet and a Piano Trio (comprising of Piano, Violin and Cello). All Strings players in the school are encouraged to actively participate in these groups as we believe ensemble playing is a valuable part of the overall musical and social development of the student. Year Three String Program In order to build a structured String department, Emmanuel College offers a Year Three String Program. The Year Three String Program is comprised of 36 students from Year Three, selected to learn a string instrument by the Strings Co-ordinator. This group will form the foundation of the Strings program at the College. Students will be chosen after careful consultation with the Junior Music Teachers and the Year Two classroom teachers. Students selected for the Year Three String Program are expected to continue with their instrument, and will not be required to play a band instrument in the Year Five Band Instrumental Music Program. Students have group lessons in Year s 3, 4 and 5. They are issued with school instruments in Year 3 and 4 only. In Year Five they will participate in a Year Five String Orchestra which rehearses at the same time as the Year Five Concert Band. Students will be required to have their own instrument from Year 5. Emmanuel College also offers Double Bass under the Rare Instrument Scheme to a select number of students. Please refer to the rare instrument section in this booklet. Year 3 and 4 Year 5 Year 6 Tuition Levy $115 per semester, instrument free of charge. Tuition Levy $160 per semester, own instrument required. Year 4 String Orchestra Conductor: Miss Alex Heussner This is an intermediate junior string ensemble for students at an AMEB level of Preliminary - Grade 1. Junior String Orchestra Conductor: Mr Asher Yaniw This is an A Grade junior string ensemble for students at an AMEB level of Grade 1 and above. Year 5 String Orchestra Conductor: Mr Asher Yaniw This ensemble consists of the string students in Year 5 only. Junior String Quartet Tutor: Mr Asher Yaniw This is an ensemble for students at an AMEB level of Grade 3 and above. Senior String Orchestra Conductor: Mr Asher Yaniw This is an A Grade senior string ensemble for students at an AMEB level of Grade 5 and above. Middle School String Orchestra Conductor: Mr Asher Yaniw This is an intermediate senior string ensemble primarily for students of AMEB level Grade 2 and above. Senior String Quartets Tutor: Mr Asher Yaniw This is an ensemble for students at an AMEB level of Grade 6 and above. 19

20 EMMANUEL COLLEGE STRING INSTRUMENT HIRE SCHEME The College has a limited number of string instruments available for hire. The option to hire an instrument may assist some students before they purchase their own instrument, or those who would prefer to wait until they are ready for the full size instrument. Once the child is ready for the full size violin or cello they must purchase their own instrument. There are a limited number of 16 inch violas available for hire. String instruments, excluding the double bass, will be available for hire up to the end of Year 6. The quality of the instruments available is in most cases suitable for a beginner to an early intermediate level student. Where possible, we recommend the student has their own instrument as a preference. We understand that the cost of the larger instruments such as the cello and the double bass can be considerable and hope this option will assist some parents. 21 YEAR 6 12 EMMANUEL COLLEGE RARE INSTRUMENT POLICY The College deems that certain musical instruments fall under the category of rare instruments. By this, we mean instruments which are quite expensive to purchase by the average household ($4000 and upwards) and which we consider not as frequently played, but which we wish to target specifically in our Co-curricular Music Program. The positive results in the study of such instruments by school age students is potentially enormous. These instruments can be quite difficult to play and therefore will require complex reading, diligence to practise and a sense of personal achievement for students who participate in the Rare Instrument Scheme. This Scheme is a heavily subsidised program and therefore it is expected students continue on the instrument until the completion of their enrolment at Emmanuel College. The Rare Instrument policy applies to the following instruments only oboe, bassoon, bass / alto clarinet, soprano saxophone, french horn, euphonium, tuba, double bass. 1. For the first two years (or equivalent) of instrument study, the following in-house scholarship scheme may be accessed for individual students: Instrument Hire $ / semester Tuition Fees *free for 4 semesters 2. After the first four semesters, the instrument hire fee is waived and students will need to join the Co-Curricular Music Program on the rare instrument as an individual enrolment: Instrument Hire free Tuition Fees as per the current Co-Curricular Music fee structure * Free weekly private lessons are given, provided that students are in regular attendance at lessons and are diligent with their home practise. The College maintains the right to withdraw the availability of instruments from students at any time should these requirements be breached, or the student not progress as intended. 22 CHORAL PROGRAM The Choral Program at Emmanuel College extends from Year 3 to Year 12. Choir rehearsals are held outside of school hours. In 2017, the following choirs are part of the Choral Program: Emmanuel Singers, Junior Choir, Boys Chorus, Grace Notes, Emmanuel Chorus, Mount Gambier Jazz Singers (Semester One) and Chamber Choir (Semester 2). The Boys Chorus and the Grace Notes are part of the Choral Excellence Program. All students in the Choral Program will have the opportunity to develop their musicianship through performing an exciting range of repertoire. This repertoire is designed to both extend students musically and expose them to a variety of musical styles. 25 RECORDING STUDIO The College operates a music recording studio with professional equipment and staff. Students have the opportunity through the Co-curricular Music program to record themselves in lessons. Also large ensembles, at the discretion of their tutors and ensemble conductors may be recorded. On occasion the College produces a CD with a collection of recordings of Musical ensembles from within the College. The recording studio is available for external hire. Fees, terms and conditions are available from the Head of Senior Music. MUSIC THEORY The AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) Theory course is taught at Emmanuel College. Each year many Emmanuel students attend the course and sit AMEB theory exams. Studying music theory has enormous benefits for students including: a deeper understanding of performance repertoire tools of composition and analysis used in music classes certain AMEB practical grade require attainment of a certain theory level e.g. Grade 6 practical requires grade 3 theory and so on studying theory prepares students for tertiary study in music where theory is a compulsory subject. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS AT EMMANUEL COLLEGE Applications for Emmanuel College Music Scholarships offered for entry from Year 5 onwards, may be made in January and February each year. Application forms which indicate pre-requisites for scholarships are available through the College website at Selected existing students and external students are invited to audition in February. A limited number of scholarships are awarded to students who possess remarkable skill and/or talent in one or more instrument or in voice. Students will be assessed according to the merit of their application and audition; and are chosen at the complete discretion of the Head of Senior Music and College Executive. From time to time, other students may be awarded scholarships, if their level of performance or skill is of an exceptional standard. 25
