3 PROGRAM NOTES Mars, Bringer of War Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity Gustav Holst, born in 1874 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, is known by the greatest number of people for his work, The Planets. From a young age, he learned both the piano and trombone before entering the Royal College of Music. The piece was originally inspired by conversations of astrology during a weekend holiday with friends in Holst became quite a follower of the subject and subsequently composed the work. Mars, Bringer of War is the first movement from The Planets, which was composed in between 1914 and 1917 and was originally titled Seven Piece for Large Orchestra. Mars depicts a war, and some say that the movement portrays a military tank although the tanks was not invented until two years after the movement was composed in The piece is approximately seven minutes in duration. Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity is the fourth movement of the work and is primarily known for the central chorale section. In Roman mythology, Jupiter was king of the gods and equivalent to Zeus in Greek mythology. The work itself is light and majestic with a stately chorale between two energetic sections. The piece is approximately eight minutes in duration. Dances from The Oprichnik Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer during the Romantic era of the late 1800s. The composer contributed much the the standard classical repertoire including such notable works as The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and 1812 Overture. Tchaikovsky composed for many genres, including operas such as The Oprichnik. In Russian culture, an oprichnik was a member of an organization created by Ivan the Terrible to govern the area of Russia called Oprichnina. The organization was known for its violent means of enforcement and has been likened to the Nazi s Secret Police. The opera itself tells the story of an oprichnik who falls in love with the

4 Tsar s daughter. The oprichnik leaves the organization to marry the daughter, but the opera ends in tragedy when the angered Tsar murders the oprichnik before the wedding, causing the daughter s death as well. The piece is approximately five minutes in duration. Trauersinfonie Composer Richard Wagner ushered in new techniques and styles during the Romantic era. The techniques he used in his operas were considered revolutionary during their time and while some thought his music represented the degradation of contemporary music, he was largely heralded as a musical hero. Wagner composed Trauersinfonie as a march for the torchlight procession, for the ceremony of the transference of his friend and mentor Carl Maria von Weber's remains to Germany eighteen years after his death in London. The march was scored for a large wind band based on two themes from Weber's opera Euryanthe, and was to represent a musical homage to Weber. The piece is approximately twelve minutes in duration. Folk Dances Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the most celebrated composers of the twentieth century. The composer has a difficult relationship with the government of his native country of Russia and had his music officially denounced twice. Both times his music was banned for a period of time. Shostakovich is mostly known for his fifteen symphonies though he also composed six concerti, two operas, twenty four preludes and fugues, a wealth of chamber music and a substantial amount of film music. Folk Dances uses various Russian folk melodies as the sources of the themes. The work was composed in Shoskovich s light hearted style and races to a strong and energetic finish with an accelerando to the end. As stated in the score, the piece is "filled with the joy and exuberance of the Russian people." The piece is approximately four minutes in duration.
