2 Australian youth orchestra The Australian Youth Orchestra is one of the world s most prestigious and innovative training organisations for young pre-professional musicians. Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia s finest young instrumentalists across metropolitan and regional Australia, from the emerging, gifted, school-aged student, to those on the verge of a professional career. AYO presents tailored training and performance programs each year for aspiring musicians, composers, arts administrators and music journalists aged 12 to 30. AYO occupies a special place in the Australian cultural landscape, where one generation of brilliant musicians inspires the next, where aspiring musicians get a taste of life as professional musicians, and where like-minded individuals from all over the country gather for numerous intensive programs to collaborate, study and perform. On the world stage, AYO is a cultural ambassador for Australia with twenty-one international tours since the inaugural tour to Japan in The 2013 tour saw AYO perform with internationally renowned artists Maestro Christoph Eschenbach, violinist Joshua Bell, and didgeridoo player William Barton in nine concerts in Australia and across Europe. Today, countless AYO alumni are members of some of the finest professional orchestras worldwide. australian youth orchestra with james morrison Australian Youth Orchestra will delight Adelaide with Mussorgsky s masterful Pictures at an Exhibition. 3 Welcome to the AYO National Music Camp Concert Series Combine over 240 of Australia s best and brightest young musicians, internationally acclaimed conductors, and some of the finest Australian musicians as tutors, in an intensive live-in environment; mix it together with powerful and challenging repertoire; throw in a hearty dose of musical passion, a hefty handful of talent and a little bit of magic, and you ve got AYO National Music Camp. It s a place where new friendships begin, where old friends are reunited and where lifelong professional contacts are made. AYO National Music Camp is a chance for young musicians to completely immerse themselves in the world of music to be surrounded by other like-minded individuals over two weeks of intense but rewarding rehearsals, tutorials, public performances and broadcast opportunities. AYO National Music Camp offers participation in one of five components: Orchestral Program This program is the core of AYO National Music Camp. Musicians participate in intensive rehearsals, tutorials and performances under the guidance of some of Australia s and the world s most respected musicians. Musicians perform in one of two full symphony orchestras or a chamber orchestra. Words about Music Program A starting point for many people now working in music journalism, broadcasting and publishing, as well as diverse areas of arts administration, this program provides a rare opportunity for participants to gain practical experience and access to professionals working in this specialised field. Composition Program The composition program cultivates the next generation of Australian composers. Participants receive individual tuition, extend and consolidate their composition technique, workshop their compositions and have their new work premiered by an ensemble of AYO tutors. Arts Administration Program This hands-on program is offered to participants with an interest in the operational and production elements of performing arts organisations. As the core orchestral and stage management team at National Music Camp, participants are given practical experience in behind-the-scenes management and concert presentation. Sound production Program This unique program looks at music production, recording and editing associated with broadcasts. The participants record AYO National Music Camp concerts and work closely with the ABC for the concert broadcasts.

It is heartening that our young musicians achievements have been recognised and applauded both nationally and internationally. The AYO musicians came to the stage with an energy that could power a small city. - Harriet Cunningham, Sydney Morning Herald The AYO players are simply the best of the best. - Emma Ayres, ABC Classic FM Our vision is to bring AYO s world-leading training programs to more young people, particularly in regional and rural areas, and increase practical pathways for young people to transition from students to professional musicians.
