This program introduces the pioneers of jazz: the cornetist Buddy Bolden, who may have been the first man to play jazz; pianist Jelly Roll Morton, who claimed to have invented jazz, but was the first to write the new music; Sidney Bechet, a clarinet prodigy whose fiery sound matched his explosive personality; and Freddie Keppard, a trumpet virtuoso who turned down a chance to win national fame for fear that others would steal the secrets of his art. The early jazz players travelled the country in the years before World War I, but few people had a chance to hear this new music. In 1917, a group of white musicians from New Orleans travelled to New York to record the first jazz recording. They called themselves The Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and within weeks their record became an unexpected hit and the jazz age had begun. This program focuses on how the story of jazz became a tale of the great cities, Chicago and New York, and of the two extraordinary artists, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, whose lives and music span almost three quarters of a century. Armstrong, who grew up on the streets of New Orleans, developed his unparalleled musical genius with the help of King Oliver, the city s top cornetist. In 1922, Armstrong followed Oliver to Chicago, where Armstrong s transcendent sound and exhilarating rhythms inspired a new generation of white and black musicians, to join the world of jazz. Ellington was raised in middle-class comfort, outgrew the society music he learned to play in Washington, D.C., and moved to Harlem. While he was there, he absorbed the stride piano rhythms of Willie The Lion Smith and with his new trumpet player, Bubber Miley, formed a band to create a music of his own. 6 N717 N707 N min. 87 min. 106 min.

15 Jazz by Ken Burns Series (continued) K Title ID Number Length I Cover the Waterfront by Louis Armstrong Our Language ( ) The True Welcome ( ) Swing: Pure Pleasure ( ) This is a clip is of Louis Armstrong playing I Cover the Waterfront. N718 4 min. This program introduces Bessie Smith, Empress of the Blues; Bix Beiderbecke, the first white jazz star, who was inspired by Louis Armstrong and dedicated his life to jazz music and in turn inspired others with his solos; and two sons of Jewish immigrants, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, for whom jazz offered an escape from the ghetto and a chance to achieve their dreams. The program also follows Duke Ellington to Harlem s most celebrated nightspot, the gangster-owned, whites-only Cotton Club, where he blended the individual voices of his band members to create wonderful harmonies. Radio stations played his music into homes across the country which brought him national fame. Louis Armstrong combined the soloist s and vocalist s arts to create scat singing and produced a series of small group recordings that culminated in his masterpiece West End Blues. From , jazz lifted the spirits of a frightened country and found itself poised for a decade of explosive growth. New York became America s jazz capital. On Broadway, Louis Armstrong revolutionized the art of the American popular song and displayed a flair for showmanship that made him one of the nation s top entertainers. In Harlem, Chick Webb pioneered his own big-band sound at the Savoy Ballroom; pianists Fats Waller and Art Tatum dazzled audiences; and Duke Ellington composed hit tunes with a sophistication that had critics comparing him to Stravinsky. Benny Goodman broadcasted big-band jazz nation wide, based on Fletcher Henderson s arrangements. As the Great Depression continued, jazz came close to becoming America s most popular music. The music was called swing and became a favorite to young fans. Jazz bandleaders were the new matinee idols, with Benny Goodman hailed as the King of Swing. Teenagers danced the jitterbug to the music of Tommy Dorsey, Jimmie Lunceford, Glenn Miller, and Artie Shaw. In New York, Billie Holiday emerged from a tragic childhood and began her career and became one of the greatest female jazz singers. In Chicago, Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson proved that, despite segregation, white and black musicians could play side-by-side on stage. On May 11, 1937, in Harlem s Savoy Ballroom, Benny Goodman travelled for a showdown with Chick Webb. The performace was billed as The Music Battle of the Century, and more than 4,000 people were in attendance. N min. N710 N min. 87 min. 7

16 Jazz by Ken Burns Series (continued) K Title ID Number Length Swing: The Velocity of Celebration ( ) Dedicated to Chaos ( ) As the 1930 s ended, swing remained popular, but the music became too predictable. The pulsing, stomping, blues-sounding music from Count Basie s band reignited the spirit of swing and in 1938, Basie and his band helped Benny Goodman bring jazz to Carnegie Hall. At the end of the decade, Chick Webb discovered the teenage singer Ella Fitzgerald. Duke Ellington was hailed as a hero in Europe, and after the war began, Coleman Hawkins startled the world with a glimpse of what jazz would become, improvising a new music on the old standard, Body and Soul. In Europe during World War II, gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt continued to play despite a Nazi ban and jazz became a beacon of hope. In America, the music became the embodiment of democracy, as bandleaders such as Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw enlisted and took their music to the troops overseas. Jazz began to change as a small band of young musicians, led by the trumpet virtuoso Dizzy Gillespie and the brilliant saxophonist Charlie Parker, started to play in a fast, intricate, exhilarating, and chaotic way. A wartime recording ban kept their music off the airwaves, but after the war, Parker and Gillespie created a bebop tune called Ko Ko. C-Jam Blues by Duke Ellington This clip of Duke Ellington playing C-Jam Blues. N747 3 min. Risk ( ) The Adventure ( ) The Cold War threat of nuclear annihilation made these anxious years. The underlying tension was reflected in the broken rhythms and dissonant melodies of bebop, and in the troubled life of bebop s biggest star, Charlie Parker. Parker s long-time partner, Dizzy Gillespie, popularized the new sound by adding showmanship and Latin rhythms, while pianist Thelonius Monk infused it with his eccentric personality to create a music all his own. As teenagers began listening to pop singers and dancing to rhythm and blues, the musicians began searching for a new audience. California musicians created a mellow sound called cool jazz, and Dave Brubeck mixed jazz with classical music and produced a record that sold a million copies. Miles Davis was determined to give jazz popular appeal on his terms, and moved beyond the cool sound he inspired and lead jazz in a new direction. In the late 1950s, young talents emerged taking the music in a new direction. In 1956, the first year Elvis topped the charts, Duke Ellington s performance at the Newport Jazz Festival became his best-selling record. The following year, Louis Armstrong made headlines when he condemned the government s failure to stand up to racism in Little Rock, Arkansas, risking his career while musicians who dismissed him as an Uncle Tom remained silent. Miles Davis, formed new groups to showcase the different facets of his stark, introspective sound; created lush recordings with arranger Gil Evans to expand the jazz audience; and used his tough-guy charisma to define what was hip. As the turbulent 60s arrived, the saxophonists, John Coltrane, wrote the pop tune My Favourite Things and Ornette Coleman, challenged all conventions with a sound he called free jazz. 17 Jazz by Ken Burns Series (continued) K Title ID Number Length New Rhumba by Miles Davis This is a clip of Miles Davis playing New Rhumba. N748 5 min. A Masterpiece by Midnight (1960 to Present) During the 1960s critics divided jazz music into categories called schools which were Dixieland, swing, bebop, hard bop, modal, free, and avant-garde. Louis Armstrong briefly outsold the Beatles with his song Hello Dolly. At that time, most jazz musicians were desperate for work, and therefore many travelled to Europe, including bebop saxophone master, Dexter Gordon. During the civil rights movement, jazz became a voice of protest. Before his early death, the avant-garde explorer, John Coltrane, linked jazz to the sixties quest for a higher consciousness with his devotional song A Love Supreme. After conquering the avant-garde with a landmark quintet, Miles Davis combined jazz with rock and roll using electric instruments to launch a wildly popular sound called fusion. In the 1970s, jazz lost the exuberant genius of Louis Armstrong and the transcendent artistry of Duke Ellington, and for many their passing marked the end of jazz music. But in 1976, Dexter Gordon returned from Europe and the music made a triumphant comeback. Over the next two decades, a new generation of musicians emerged, led by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis who was educated in the music s traditions, skilled in the art of improvisation, and passionate with ideas that only jazz could express. The musical journey that began in the dance halls and the street parades of New Orleans at the start of the 20th century continued, and as jazz music enters its second century, it remains vibrant, evolving, and swinging. 24 Jazz Theory to Accompany Instrumental Jazz 10, 20, 30 (CORE, SK) In this booklet, the goal is to help students learn the language of jazz. Every effort has been made to ensure that the language used is the common language of jazz musicians. In order to converse intelligently about their music, students need to understand and use theoretical terms correctly. Finally, effort has been made to try to describe aspects of jazz theory in more than one way, as not everyone always has the same learning style or understands things the same way. 25 Patterns for Jazz Authors: Coker, Jerry; Casale, Jimmy; Campbell, Gary; and Greene, Jerry (CORE) Jazz improvisation is the spontaneous creation of music in the jazz style. This book provides a collection of patterns that a student of jazz improvision may practice. The patterns begin with rudimentary exercises such as scales, modes, simple chords, and four basic types of chord movement. Following the exercises are usable patterns, as well as more complicated patterns, chords, and scales. Finally the book progresses to interval studies and free-form patterns. This resource is meant to be used while playing, and theorectical information is inserted whenever possible to support the context that is presented. The exercises and patterns can be applied to any instrument. Changes are intrinsic to jazz improvisation, and this resource serves as an introduction to pattern-playing in jazz and as a springboard for the development of other, new patterns as they present themselves.
