The Season begins with local treasure Jon Nakamatsu, 1997 Van Cliburn Competition Gold Medalist, now celebrated worldwide. October brings Korean pianist Jongdo An, soloist with renowned orchestras and regular guest at leading international music festivals. Russian virtuoso Vyacheslav Gryaznov, winner of the Rubinstein and Rachmaninoff Competitions in Moscow, plays an all-russian program in November. The celebrated piano duo Frei and Yerzhanov perform Romantic Period favorites in January, Exhilarating artist Alessio Bax, soloist with more than 100 orchestras since winning the Leeds International Piano Competition, will thrill in February. March presents the brilliant Boris Giltberg, who won First Prize at the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition (Brussels) and performs internationally with esteemed conductors. Italian pianist Beatrice Rana, Silver Medalist and Audience Favorite at the 2013 Van Cliburn Competition, lights up April. And, back in May by popular demand, the radiant Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak, the only woman awarded First Prize and Princess Mary Gold Medal at a Leeds International Piano Competition. San Francisco Classical Voice Since his dramatic 1997 Van Cliburn Gold Medal triumph, Jon Nakamatsu s brilliant but unassuming musicianship and eclectic repertoire have made him a clear favorite throughout the world, both on the concert circuit and in the recording studio. He has performed widely in North America, Europe, and the Far East. Mr. Nakamatsu has been soloist with many leading orchestras, including those of Detroit, Los Angeles, Rochester, San Francisco, Seattle, Tokyo and Vancouver. Numerous festival engagements have included the Aspen, Tanglewood, Ravinia, Vail, and Britt festivals. In 1999, Mr. Nakamatsu performed at the White House for President and Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Nakamatsu records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi USA, which has released 12 critically acclaimed CDs. His all-gershwin recording featuring Rhapsody in Blue and the Concerto in F rose to number three on Billboard s classical music charts, earning extraordinary critical acclaim. Jon Nakamatsu studied privately with the late Marina Derryberry from the age of six, and has worked with Karl Ulrich Schnabel, son of the great pianist Artur Schnabel. Menahem Pressler, concert pianist and international piano competition juror. Mr. An was born in South Korea in He studied at Austria s Mozarteum University of Salzburg, where he received bachelor s, master s and postrgraduate degrees with the highest honor. He moved to Hamburg, earning a Konzertexamen degree with highest honor. After winning the prestigious Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Piano Competition 2012 in Paris (Concert with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France) and the Prix SAS le Prince Albert II de Monaco, Mr. An began a world concert tour, performing in such respected venues as Salle Gaveau, Paris, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Grand Hall D. Shostakovich in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has been soloist with renowned orchestras including Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, and Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. He is a regular guest at leading international festivals including the Salzburg Summer Festival, G. Enescu Music Festival (Bucharest), Musical Olympus Festival (St. Petersburg), Les Pianos Folies du Touquet (France), Festival Musique au Coeur du Médoc (Bordeaux), and Meissen Pianoforte Festival (Dresden, Germany). He has recorded for Sony Music and NDR Germany. Vyacheslav Gryaznov Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. There can be no doubt that Vyacheslav Gryaznov is one of the great wonders of modern pianism. Musical Life magazine R ussian classical pianist, transcriber and composer Vyacheslav Gryaznov (born 1982) studied at the Moscow Conservatory and is now an assistant professor in the Conservatory s Piano Department. He has won numerous prestigious competitions including the 1997 Rubinstein International Competition in Moscow (1st Prize) and the 1998 Italian To the memory of Rachmaninov Competition (1st Prize). He has performed throughout Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Asia and Europe, both in solo recitals and with chamber groups and orchestras, including the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has cooperated with such major companies as the NHK Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (in a project comprising some 30 recitals, and CD and video recordings). Mr. Gryaznov is also known as the composer of numerous concert transcriptions for piano solo, piano four-hands, and chamber groups that have become popular all over the world. 4 JILL STEINBERG Klara Frei and Temirzhan Yerzhanov Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. A memorable event in my life s concert experience. San Francisco Classical Voice Klara Frei studied at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and earned her Master s Degree at Switzerland s Basel Music Academy. She has performed to acclaim as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe and Russia. She and her husband, Temirzhan Yerzhanov, now frequently perform together. She taught piano in Switzerland, France and the UK before locating to the Bay Area, and her students were regularly accepted at top musical institutions, e.g., the UK s Royal College of Music. Temirzhan Yerzhanov launched his career in 1993 by winning the First Prize and Gold Medal at Germany s XI th International Robert Schumann Piano Competition. He also conducts opera and symphonic music. Mr. Yerzhanov has toured widely in Europe, Russia, France, the U.S, China and India, and performed with distinguished orchestras including the Moscow Radio Tchaikovsky Symphony. He has appeared in prestigious venues such as the Moscow and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Halls, Berlin s Konzerthaus, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Salle Gaveau in Paris and Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York. He records for Con Brio Recordings and Classical Assembly. Alessio Bax Sunday, February 5, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. The Menlo audience rose as one in ecstatic applause and cries of Bravo! Peninsula Reviews, Dr. Gary Lemco Alessio Bax graduated with top honors at the record age of 14 from the conservatory of his hometown, Bari, Italy. His playing quivers with an almost hypnotic intensity, says Gramophone magazine, leading to what Dallas Morning News calls an out-of-body experience. First Prize winner at the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions and a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient he has appeared as soloist with more than 100 orchestras, including the London and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, the Dallas and Houston Symphonies, the NHK Symphony in Japan, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle. He has thrilled audiences across the U.S. (e.g., in Carnegie Hall and Washington s Kennedy Center) and partnered with violinist Joshua Bell for over thirty concerts in Europe and North and South America, receiving rave reviews. He appears frequently at prestigious music festivals, e.g., the Beethovenfest in Bonn, Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and our own Music@Menlo. His recordings have twice been Gramophone s Editor s Choice, as well as winning the Critics Choice award of American Record Guide. 5 JULIEN FAUGERE Boris Giltburg Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Giltburg s genius is to bestow a unique character on every work he performs, freely and with thundering audacity. La Libre Belgique, 2015 B orn in 1984 in Moscow, Boris Giltburg moved to Tel Aviv at an early age. Having won the Santander Competition in 2002 and taken second (and audience) prize at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 2011, he appeared with leading orchestras, such as the Israel Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Swedish Radio Symphony, and Danish Radio Symphony. He made his BBC Proms debut in 2010 and has toured regularly to South America and China. In 2013 he won first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Brussels), with subsequent concerts in Vienna, London, Tokyo, Brussels and Seattle. He has worked with esteemed conductors such as Neeme Järvi, Edo de Waart and Christoph von Dohnányi. For the 2015/16 Season, The Royal Scottish National Orchestra invited him for seven concerts in their Rachmaninov series. Having initially appeared on the EMI Debut label, Mr. Giltburg released an acclaimed CD of Prokofiev s War Sonatas on Orchid Classics in In 2015, with the release of a Schumann recital disc, he began a long-term recording plan with Naxos Records. Beatrice Rana Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Rana s playing is exhilarating, extrovert and effortlessly virtuosistic. BBC Magazine B orn to a family of musicians in 1993, Beatrice Rana made her debut at age nine, performing Bach s Concerto in F minor. In June 2013, she won Silver (2nd Prize) and the Audience Award at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, having already attracted international attention in 2011 when she won 1st Prize and all special prizes at the Montreal International Competition. Ms. Rana is invited to concert series and festivals throughout the world, including Zurich s Tonhalle, Vienna s Musikverein, Paris Theatre des Champs Elysées, London s Wigmore Hall, Washington s Kennedy Center, the Verbier Festival and Klavier Festival Ruhr. She has played or is due to play with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Dresdner Philharmonie, with conductors like Zubin Mehta, Trevor Pinnock and Leonard Slatkin. Harmonia Mundi released an acclaimed live CD of her Cliburn performances, prompting Gramophone magazine to proclaim that she possesses... more than a touch of genius.
