1 COMUNICATO STAMPA / MEDIA RELEASE The Italian Cultural Institute and Co.As.It. are proud to invite you to OI DIPNOI Nu-folk & old dance from Sicily Australian tour 2017 Bastrika Oi Dipnoi in concert Thursday 6 April, 6.30pm, Co.As.It. Museo Italiano, 199 Faraday Street, Carlton FREE EVENT. RSVP essential: Facebook, Co.As.It. Museo Italiano, Language & Cultural Centre or ihs@coasit.com.au Tarantella Workshop with Oi Dipnoi and Master Dancer Francesca Campione Friday 7 April, 5.00pm-6.00pm, Italian Cultural Institute, 233 Domain Road, South Yarra FREE EVENT. RSVP essential: bookings.iicmelbourne@esteri.it For interviews: e: gulisano.mario@gmail.com; m: Oi Dipnoi * Hailing from Sicily, this charming trio draws deeply from the wells of tradition while creating a new sound full of personality. Born from an encounter between tradition and innovation, Oi Dipnoi s music is rooted in traditional melodies of the region, where new themes are developed and sustained by the diatonic accordion, supported by a powerful rhythmic section with electric percussion or double bass. Master dancer Francesca Campione will be accompanying the band on their first ever tour of Australia, enthralling you with Tarantella (traditional southern Italian folk dances). Dipnoi are a metaphor for the current music scene in Sicily: prehistoric fish/living fossils that have adapted for survival. Valerio Cairone (accordion, bagpipe) Marco Carnemolla (bass, vocals) Mario Gulisano (percussion, vocals) Francesca Campione (dancer, teacher) PTO
2 Dipnoi are living fossils, an order of prehistoric fish that have vestiges of rudimentary lungs: during periods of drought, adapting to the environment, they take refuge in small, moist burrows and can breathe atmospheric oxygen. The poetics developed by Oi Dipnoi trio were born out of the meeting between tradition and innovation: one enriches the other in a constant dialogue in which the assets of the musical culture of the island are given new value. A heritage inherited by Valerio Cairone, a multiinstrumentalist who collected the melodies of the region. The protagonists of this heritage were shepherds, farmers, carters a universe that was well explored by famous writers in Sicily at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. Thus the creation of an original repertoire in which the themes are developed and sustained by the diatonic accordion, supported by a powerful rhythmic section with electric percussion or double bass by Mario Gulisano and Marco Carnemolla. The result is a new sound full of personality, thanks to a charming and light fusion with elements of jazz and progressive archaic folk. The trio, formed in 2013, has performed successfully several times following their debut at important folk festivals in Italy and Europe, such as Adriatico Mediterraneo in Ancona, ZampognArea and Musicamilo in Sicily, Na dasdy Folk Festival in Sarvar and Babel Sound in Balatonlelle, Hungary in In the following year the trio toured Italy and Hungary again and recorded their first studio album in November in Hungary under the title Bastrika, which was released in April 2015 by NarRator Records. There are also two special guests on the record, Da niel and Vilmos Gryllus, of Kalaḱa, the most famous and long-established folk group in Hungary. Later in 2015, the trio took part in the Festival I ART, producing the show Etnafjord together with the Swedish female singers quartet Kraja. Later they performed at the Kala ka Folk Festival in Eger, Hungary, Frazzano Folk Festival in Sicily, Paesaggi Acustici in Corropoli, Italy and the Epidaurus Festival in Cavtat, Croatia. They are currently promoting Bastrika. Tarantella Workshop & Live Music Friday 7 April at the Italian Cultural Institute, Melbourne. * Come to the Italian Cultural Institute and learn the basics of this traditional southern Italian folk dance from the master Francesca Campione and the music of Oi Dipnoi. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce general audiences to a very rich folk dance culture with an active current performance practice in Southern Italy. During the workshop, the participants will learn the basic technique and practice the steps supported by live music. Tarantella is an old folk dance which is done in pairs and is very popular in southern Italy and throughout the Mediterranean. It contains both fast, energetic steps and combined arm and leg movements which improve coordination. See images on the following pages
