9 Adjudicators Cheryl Duvall, Toronto, ON Senior Piano Cheryl Duvall is a multi-faceted musician and pianist. She is active as a soloist, collaborative pianist, teacher and adjudicator and has toured and performed throughout Canada, Italy, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, England, Argentina and the U.S. She is especially passionate about contemporary music, which has led her along with friend and violinist Ilana Waniuk, to co-found the Thin Edge New Music Collective, now in their fifth season. Thin Edge completed their first Canadian tour in winter 2013, was guest artists in residence at the SoundSCAPE Festival of New Music in Maccagno, Italy in 2013 and at Le Pantographe in Moutier, Switzerland in 2014 and has undertaken a Canadian tour with Montreal s Ensemble Paramirabo throughout To date, they are responsible for the commissioning and premieres of 40 new works in the past 4 years with plans for 11 new works throughout their fifth concert season. Other highlights of the season include performances in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montreal, a substantial recording project with Montreal s Ensemble Paramirabo, a guest artistic residency with Wilfrid Laurier University to celebrate their 40th Anniversary, and a full artistic residency at Array Music in Toronto. Cheryl is also a member of the experimental project, Bespoken, a mixed ensemble of musicians of different genres, who released the album, Aigre Douce - music of Nick Storring and Daniel Brandes, in November 2013 under Divorce Records Heavy Fog label. An experienced choral accompanist, Ms Duvall is the pianist for the Toronto based Bell Arte Singers and the internationally renowned Oakville Children s Choir, to which she has toured and competed internationally with gold standings as well as recorded albums of Canadian choral repertoire and Seasonal Music. She was the music director for Essential Opera s Premieres project and has also collaborated with FAWN New Opera for their premiere of Adam Scime s L Homme et le ciel, with both of these productions having second presentations at Kitchener-Waterloo s bi-annual Open Ears Festival in Essential Opera s Premieres project received a reprise with Ottawa s Opera Lyra in fall Ms Duvall has attended the Casalmaggiore Music Festival in Italy, the Palazzo Ricci masterclass series, the Toronto Summer Music Festival, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference and held two artistic residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts. In 2009, she was awarded a SSHRC grant for her pedagogical research on how to incorporate aspects of the Alexander Technique into lessons with beginner piano students. Besides performing, she maintains a full private piano studio and adjudicates piano competitions across Canada. Ms. Duvall completed an Honours Bachelor of Music, majoring in Piano Performance and Theory and a Diploma of Chamber Music from Wilfrid Laurier University as well as a Master s of Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Toronto. Her main teachers and influences include Guy Few, Chris Foley, Midori Koga, Carmen Piazzinni, Nina Tichman, Henri-Paul Sicsic, and Anya Alexeyev. Ed Janus, Toronto, ON Intermediate & Senior Piano Edward Janus is a graduate of both the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto. His principal teacher was Boris Berlin. Additional studies were undertaken with Earle Moss and Madelaine Bone. Mr. Janus has been teaching piano, theory and history at the RCM since In the 1970 s and 80 s he was principal of the west end division of the RCM (Etobicoke). In the 1990s he held numerous administrative positions at RCM including several years as academic director of Royal Conservatory Examinations. In the United States Ed Janus gave numerous MTNA presentations promoting Royal Conservatory Examinations. In Canada he presented many teacher workshops throughout Canada for both Examinations and ORMTA. He continues to conduct examinations in both Canada and the USA. He currently teaches piano at The Royal Conservatory, where formerly he also taught and examined history and rudiments. Mr. Janus has been invited to adjudicate across Canada, and over the past thirty years has adjudicated at over twenty-five festivals. 9

10 Adjudicators Lisa Iwasaki, Toronto, ON Junior Piano Lisa Iwasaki enjoys teaching private lessons in piano to students from ages three to eighty-three. Her students participate in a wide variety of activities, including recitals, festivals, assessments and exams. The studio program includes the study of rudiments, history, keyboard harmony, and pedagogy. Lisa completed her undergraduate studies with Andrew Markow. She studied piano pedagogy with Samuel Holland and piano with David Karp while at Southern Methodist University. During that time she participated in master classes with Joaquin Achucarro and Philippe Entremont. Lisa s post-graduate studies were with Fernando Laires in Rochester, New York. She also took further study in Vicenza, Italy with Nazzareno Carusi. Lisa Iwasaki has presented workshops covering an overview of psychological principles of learning as well as theories and cognitive development relevant for piano teachers. She has also conducted several seminars on technique, motivation, recital preparation, developing artistry in the young student, and special teaching concerns for adult students. Ms. Iwasaki has been active as an adjudicator since 1996, including festivals across Ontario and in upstate New York. She accompanies a children s choir and also works as a church musician. Dr. Julia Nolan, Vancouver, BC Woodwinds Multi-instrumentalist Julia Nolan (saxophones, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, oboe) maintains an active performing schedule committed to promoting new works for saxophone. She has numerous commissioned works by Canadian composers with a special interest in those from British Columbia including: Denis Bedard, Dorothy Chang, Stephen Chatman, Keith Hamel, Stefan Hintersteininger, Jacquie Leggatt, Colin MacDonald, Alan Matheson, Alain Mayrand, John Oliver, Robert Pritchard, Jeffrey Ryan, Farshid Samandari, and Fred Stride. She performs with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver New Music Society, and the Turning Point Ensemble as orchestral saxophonist in addition to performances as soloist. Recent performances and guest teaching include the American Saxophone Academy (July 2016) and the University of North Texas (January & April, 2016). In April 2016, she performed the U.S. premiere of Jeffrey Ryan s concerto Brazen with the Lubbock Symphony at the NASA Biennial Conference and premiered the concerto Cool Cut by John Oliver with Vancouver s Turning Point Ensemble. In July 2015, she recorded Prestidigtation by Robert Buckley with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy. She is looking forward to performances and recording with Saxophilia Saxophone Quartet (Capilano University) and with Jane Hayes and Joan Blackman as part of the Vetta Chamber Music Series and the Langley Fine Arts Concert Series in Dr. Nolan has been a guest artist-teacher at international saxophone workshops in Taiwan and Hong Kong and performs regularly at the Regional, National and World Saxophone Congresses. She served as an international judge at the 5th Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition in Dinant, Belgium (2010) and was the head judge at the International Saxophone Symposium and Competition (ISSAC) in Columbus, Georgia in 2012 and Dr. Nolan is an Artist-Clinician for Yamaha, Canada Ltd. and Rousseau Musical Products and teaches at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the University of British Columbia. 10

11 Adjudicators Olivia Blander, Vancouver, BC Cello & Chamber Groups Originally from Ottawa, Olivia Blander completed her Masters of Music degree at Yale University in the studio of professor Aldo Parisot. She received her Bachelors degree from the Harid Conservatory (Boca Raton, Florida) where she studied with Canadian cellist Johanne Perron. Olivia has appeared frequently as a soloist and chamber musician on CBC radio, including the nationally broadcast Debut Series. She has been a participant in several major summer festivals including classes at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and the fellowship program of the Tanglewood Music Centre. After returning to Ottawa from the U.S. in 2000, Olivia enjoyed four months working with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, and joined the Vancouver Symphony in September Elyssa Lefurgey-Smith, Victoria, BC Violin & Viola Elyssa Lefurgey-Smith has been actively engaged in teaching, coaching and program development for more than fifteen years. She was the director of the strings program at the Kingsway Conservatory of Music in Toronto since 2007 and is the founder of the KCM orchestral program. She is also a certified Suzuki teacher and has prepared students for every level of RCM exam from beginner to university prep. As a student, Elyssa was presented with many valuable collaborative opportunities under the tutelage of Heilwig von Konigslow and as a teacher has an avid passion for creating unique concerts and collaborative opportunities for her students. In 2010 Elyssa started the first string orchestra group. The orchestra is now a full program with three levels that extends to RCM grade 10. The senior orchestra has appeared in annual concerts alongside professional musicians in the Aradia Baroque Ensemble as well as in several projects with the VIVA Youth Choir and the Holy Family Youth Choir including a presentation of Britten s Noah s Flood. They also appear regularly alongside the KCM faculty and the students are all given opportunities to appear as concerto soloists with the orchestra. Elyssa remains on the faculty of the Kingsway Conservatory of Music and will continue teaching her long term students with distance Skype lessons. She also has several trips planned each season to participate on the faculty at the chamber music summer workshop and host master classes throughout the year. Since moving to Brentwood Bay in the summer of 2016, Elyssa will be expanding her student base to the violinists of Vancouver Island both young and old. 11

12 Adjudicators Alison Nystrom, Langley, BC Junior Voice Alison Nystrom, soprano, is a much sought after performer, teacher and adjudicator and is noted for her expressive singing. Her opera credits include: Pamina in The Magic Flute, Diana in Orpheus in the Underworld, Clorinda in La Cenerentola, and the Woodpecker and Innkeeper s wife in The Cunning Little Vixen. She has performed as a soloist in Mozart s Requiem, Schubert s Mass in G, Bach s Coffee Cantata, Haydn s Nelsonmesse, Finzi s In Terra Pax, Rutter s Mass of the Children, Bevan s Nou Goth Sonne Under Wode, Vivaldi s Gloria, Handel s Messiah, Mendelssohn s St. Paul, and Mozart s Coronation Mass. Ms. Nystrom has collaborated with VISI, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Whatcom County Chorale, and the Vancouver Bach Choir. After studying Kinesiology in her undergraduate degree, Ms. Nystrom earned a Master of Music in Opera at the University of British Columbia. Post graduate studies have included singing at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, a Meisterkurs für Liedgestaltung in Husum, Germany and teaching as a NATS Intern at the University of North Carolina. She also holds an A.R.C.T. in Singing Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. For many summers, Ms. Nystrom taught at the UBC Summer Vocal Workshop. She currently teaches voice at Trinity Western University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She has a passion to see young people discover their voices and use them in a healthy way. Dr. Jeanette Gallant, Vancouver, BC Intermediate & Senior Musical Theatre & Contemporary Voice Dr. Jeanette Gallant is a Canadian musician with over 25 years of diverse experience as a music lecturer, voice teacher, conductor, adjudicator, performer, and administrator in Canada, S.E. Asia, and the United Kingdom. She earned a D.Phil. in Music from the University of Oxford, and studied under Professor Martin Stokes supported by the Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (ORSAS). Dr. Gallant has held various academic posts at Red Deer College (Alberta), the University of Windsor (Ontario), the University of Reading (UK), Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts (HKAPA), and various Oxford Colleges (UK). She has been a guest vocal and choral clinician for Singapore s Ministry of Education, the British Columbia Registered Music Teachers Association, the British Columbia Choral Federation, the Reading Bach Choir, and various other U.K. choral societies. She was the Artistic Director of the Whistler Classical Music Street Festival for four years, conducted Hong Kong s first sing-a-long Messiah, and has prepared choirs for international events such as the Calgary International Organ Festival with conductor Simon Preston Performance highlights include the Whistler Classical Music Festival, a classical radio recital for RTHK Radio 4 in Hong Kong, Handel s Messiah with Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, and Vivaldi s Gloria with the Hong Kong Bach Choir and Orchestra. An accomplished ethnomusicologist, Dr. Gallant has published and presented her work internationally, and her most recent publication is forthcoming in the Yale Journal for Music and Religion next year. Recently returned to Vancouver after twenty years, Dr. Gallant specializes in world music pedagogy for choral educators, and in vocal training for singers of all ages using bel canto and somatic vocal techniques. 12

13 Adjudicators Dr. Kevin Zakresky, Vancouver, BC Intermediate & Senior Classical Voice Dr. Kevin Zakresky is conductor of the Pacifica Singers and the founder-director of Sea to Sky Symphony in Vancouver. He is the past Music Director of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra and this season has conducted the St Louis Symphony, Sudbury Symphony, West Coast Symphony, Vancouver Chamber Choir and in the Spring of 2016 launched the Sea to Sky Symphony in Vancouver. He has recently been appointed Associate Conductor of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, a touring company that collaborates with orchestras through North America and Europe. He completed his Doctorate at Yale University in In Spring of 2016 the Zelda Symphony has brought him to London to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra (in Wembley Arena) as well as Montreal, Columbus, Charlottesville and Miami with further dates in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in the fall. In December 2013 Zakresky made his CBC/Radio-Canada broadcast debut, conducting Monteverdi, with the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, a performance held at Vancouver s Orpheum Theatre. In the summer of 2014 Zakresky worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London on an informal mentoring project; he returned to London in August of 2015 for another residency with the BBC. Dr. Zakresky is founding director of the SATB ensemble Orpheum Voices at the Vancouver Symphony School of Music. As part of its inaugural season in 2013, Orpheum Voices sang Fauré s Requiem with the West Coast Symphony. Since then the group has performed regularly with the Vancouver Symphony and Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Zakresky received a Doctoral degree in Choral Conducting at Yale University in February 2012; his degree recital featured Cherubini s rarely-programmed Requiem for male voices and orchestra. At Yale he won the prestigious Aidan Kavanagh Prize for Distinguished Intellectual Achievement, and was director of the University Chapel Choir and assistant conductor of the Yale Camerata. His major teachers were Marguerite Brooks and Simon Carrington, and he coached with Helmut Riling and Stephen Layton. Before studying at Yale he completed a master s degree in conducting at the University of British Columbia, studying with Bruce Pullan. He regularly offers master classes and workshops in Western Canada and is a recent winner of the BC Choral Federation s Youth Music Award. From 2010 to 2012 he was assistant conductor of Chor Leoni Men s Choir, and the Founder-Director of Chor Leoni s MYVoice program, a choral experience for young men in the Lower Mainland. He is a past member of the faculty of the innovative Vancouver International Song Institute, serves on the faculty of the BC Choral Federation s Choral Directorship Course, and acts as an adjudicator and clinician throughout Western Canada. He has held teaching positions at Douglas College and Simon Fraser University. Since 2013 Zakresky has taught voice and music repertoire at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music, in addition to directing Orpheum Voices. He has sung in the Festivale de due mondi in Spoleto, Italy, volunteered for Musicians without Borders in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and led choral workshops and clinics in Hong Kong. He publishes regularly in choral and vocal periodicals. 13

14 Adjudicators Elizabeth Volpé-Bligh, Vancouver, BC Harp & Guzheng Elizabeth Volpé-Bligh became the Vancouver Symphony s Principal Harpist in 1982, after six seasons as the Principal Harpist of the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra. A graduate of University of Toronto s Bachelor of Music program in 1975, she studied with Judy Loman (Toronto Symphony), Alice Chalifoux (Cleveland Orchestra) and Edna Phillips (Philadelphia Orchestra). Ms. Volpé s career includes concerto performances with the VSO and other orchestras, chamber music concerts, movie soundtracks and recordings. She is featured in The Greater Vancouver Album, a collection of works by Michael Conway Baker, and performed the Harp Concerto that he wrote for her with the VSO. It was recorded by CBC and can be listened to on the Canadian Music Centre s web site. She will be premiering a new piece by Scott Good for harp and strings at the World Harp Congress in Sydney, Australia in 2014, and will repeat the performance with the VSO. Many of Elizabeth s students have won awards such as the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, Edith Lando Gifted Youth Scholarship, and RCM Silver Medal, and four students have been members of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. She has enjoyed watching her students become successful professional harpists. Her teaching career has included teaching privately and at institutions such as the VSO School of Music, Vancouver Academy of Music, UBC, Vancouver Community College, Douglas College, and the Island Mountain Arts Festival. She has had students from all over the world come to study with her including from Hong Kong, Singapore, Ireland and France. She taught and performed at the 6th International Harp Workshop in Sanctuaria del Crea in Italy. She co-founded Canadian International Summer Harp Institute in Ms. Volpé has had articles published in the Teachers Forum of the American Harp Journal, Dutch Harp Journal, the New Zealand Harp Association newsletter, and online. She has given master classes in China, Italy, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. Her compositions for solo harp, six of which are included in the 2008 Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus, are being taught and performed all over the world. She is currently President of the BC Chapter of the American Harp Society and was the Chair of the 11th World Harp Congress Host Committee. She has been featured in American Harp Society Conferences and was a judge at the OSM Standard Life Competition in Don Hlus was appointed Chair to the Music Department in He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in classical guitar performance from the University of British Columbia, where he studied with Michael Strutt. He has also performed in master classes for Elliot Fisk, Mark Teicholtz, William Kanengiser, Scott Tenant, Benjamin Verdery, Paul O'Dette, and Stephen Robinson. Post-graduate studies were with the Canadian guitarist Harold Micay. He also studied jazz composition & arranging and guitar performance at Capilano College. In 2003 he completed his Masters Degree in Higher Education (UBC). His research examined how different educational beliefs and values affect the design, development, and implementation of curriculum. Don Hlus, Langley, BC Guitar Don has been active in the Vancouver region as soloist and chamber musician. He frequently presents chamber music recitals with members of the Vancouver Symphony, the Vancouver Opera orchestra and the CBC Radio orchestra. Don has held a teaching position at KPU since the music program's inception in He is also Founder, Coordinator, and Artistic Director of the Fraser Valley Acoustic Guitar Festival, the largest festival of its kind in Canada. In addition to his duties at KPU, he teaches privately in Fort Langley, and is member of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators' Association and the British Columbia Registered Music Teachers' Association (South Fraser). 14

15 Adjudicators Jane Hayes, White Rock, BC Adult Piano Since her debut with the Toronto Symphony, Jane Hayes' concerts have taken her across Canada, the United States, Europe and Mexico. An active recording artist, she has 17 CDs available on the Fanfare, EMI, Centrediscs, ATMA, Artifact, CBC-Musica Viva and CBC SM5000 labels. In addition to her position as Director of Keyboard Studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley, Jane maintains a busy performing schedule as soloist, collaborator, and chamber musician and founding member of the Turning Point Ensemble, the Yarilo Ensemble and Sea and Sky with clarinetist François Houle. Following a successful Yarilo Ensemble touring project in 2015, where she presented a program celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Scriabin in Switzerland, Russia, Bulgaria and Israel, Jane will return to Europe and the United Kingdom in 2017 with an all-canadian duo piano program and with the Turning Point Ensemble presenting a specially commissioned opera Air India. As soloist, Jane is delighted to be returning to the Fraser Valley Symphony Orchestra with the Schumann Concerto. Of her performance at the Victoria International Festival, the reviewer wrote that she gave a stunning account of the concerto, combining seamlessly fluid passagework with beautiful tone colouring. Superb. Beyond her active performing schedule, Jane is a dedicated teacher and educator. A faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University since 1993, Jane was the recipient of the 2015 Kwantlen Faculty of Arts Distinguished Teaching Award given for outstanding achievement in her field as noted by students. As a proponent of Canadian music, she released a teaching edition and recording of early piano works by Barbara Pentland in 2010 which is available through Avondale Press. She is in demand as an adjudicator, competition judge and clinician throughout Canada, and is past president of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators Association. Leslie Janos, Langley, BC Composition Leslie Janos was born in Liverpool, England. He specializes as a solo recitalist and chamber player. He has performed in the U. S. and Canada and has had numerous programs recorded for the C.B.C. As a composer, Janos has written music for various genres in the areas of solo piano, voice, flute, violin, cello, bassoon (with piano), and for chamber music ensembles as well as for string orchestra. His song cycle based on the poetry of Rumi as well as a song collection and a large work for cello and piano was performed during Canadian Music week in His music has been performed by prominent musicians such as Isabelle LaPierre, Ian Hampton and George Zukerman in such venues as the Vancouver Art Gallery, University of Nelson B.C., the Langley Community Music School and the Campbell River Concert Society. As a soloist Janos has presented two major tours throughout the western provinces with his own piano under the former Overture Concert Association. CBC Vancouver chose one of his broadcast performances for the signature theme of Vancouver Recital which was broadcast Canada wide, weekly throughout the year. He has also given many solo recitals for various institutions in the Fraser Valley. As a chamber music player Janos has collaborated with some of Canada s foremost musicians including Phyllis Mailing, Robert Aitken, Arthur Polson, George Zukerman, and with music organizations such as The Cassenti Players, The Purcell String Quartet, The White Rock Festival of Strings, The Vancouver New Music Society, The CBC Chamber Orchestra as well as with Esther Glazer, Paul Wolfe, Gerard Haft, The New College String Quartet, The St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in the U.S. During his student years with eminent pianist Jacques Abram, Leslie Janos was a consistent first place winner of piano competitions such as the Arthur Fiedler concerto competition, and performed the Beethoven Emperor concerto with Fiedler conducting the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. Janos was first place winner of Talent Unlimited competition in London Ontario which resulted in a 30 minute radio broadcast. He holds a B.A. and M.M. degree from the University of South Florida and A.R.C.T. performance diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. Leslie Janos is currently a member of the faculty of the Langley Community Music School, and a former faculty member of Trinity Western University, The Vancouver Academy of Music and The University of Tampa, Florida. 15
