The tale that unfolds is one of passion, obsession, and spurned love. Carmen has become a worldwide operatic phenomenon and is a favorite among long-time opera enthusiasts and those new to opera. The music is glorious and sensual, the story is timelessly tragic, and it s a vocal and orchestral tour de force, filled with famous melodies and glorious ensembles. 4 Kayoko Dan, Music Director I am thrilled to introduce to you the 2018/19 Season full of your favorite classical masterworks and inspiring new works in our Barnett & Company Masterworks Series. I am particularly excited to announce the Chattanooga Fanfare Project, where the CSO commissions four fanfares by four local composers: Douglas Hedwig, Roland Carter, Jonathan McNair, and Tim Hinck. Also, I am always proud to showcase CSO musicians as soloists: oboists Robert Burks and Carey Shinbaum, percussionist Chad Crummel, and our Concertmaster Holly Mulcahy on a piece written by Chattanooga native, George S. Clinton. Some other highlights include Stravinsky s Firebird, Mozart s Mass in C minor featuring the CSO Chorus and Covenant Choirs, Brahms Concerto for Piano No. 2 featuring Spencer Myer, Shostakovich s Symphony No. 10, Tchaikovsky s Symphony No. 4, and Beethoven s Symphony No. 6. For the Chamber Series, we are continuing our partnership with Chattanooga State Community College, where we will feature wonderful works such as Beethoven s Symphony No. 4, Villa Lobos for bassoon featuring our Principal Bassoon Eric Anderson, Ravel s Le Tombeau de Couperin, and Mozart s Symphony No. 39. This is a season full of exciting programming, and I can t wait to share it with you! 6 Barnett & Company Masterworks Series BRAHMS SYMPHONY NO. 1 Chad Crummel, percussion TIM HINCK Fanfare for the New South JAMES MACMILLAN Veni, veni, Emmanuel BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 Chad Crummel, CSO Principal Percussionist, takes on James MacMillan s popular percussion concerto Veni, veni, Emmanuel. MacMillan s imaginative piece features gongs, log drums, cowbells, marimba, and congas, making it a visual and auditory experience unlike any other! The second half of the concert features Johannes Brahms incomparable Symphony No. 1. Drastically different from his previous symphony, Symphony No. 6 features the simplicity of nature and includes elements such as birdsongs, thunderstorms, brooks and shepherds songs. Later in the evening, the CSO Chorus, along with the Covenant Chorale, Covenant Singers and Chamber Singers, will join the orchestra as they perform Mozart s Great Mass in C minor STRAVINSKY S FIREBIRD Robert Burks, oboe Carey Shinbaum, oboe TCHAIKOVSKY ALAN ELKINS STRAVINSKY The Tempest Double Concerto Firebird Suite Referred to as a symphonic fantasia, Tchaikovsky s The Tempest embodies the energy of a powerful storm with dramatic percussion, surging strings, and a commanding bass fanfare. The evening will also feature local composer Alan Elkins Double Concerto and Stravinsky s Firebird Suite. Stravinsky s first ballet, Firebird became an instant success and remains to be his most popular orchestral work to this day. Powerful, mysterious, beautiful, and exhilarating, this 1919 suite from the ballet will take your breath away!

8 Barnett & Company Masterworks Series MENDELSSOHN & BRAHMS Spencer Myer, piano MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 3 BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 2 The evening will begin with Mendelssohn s Scottish Symphony. Featuring a dark and stormy first movement, the piece quickly takes a turn for the joyous and lighthearted with a finale that is reminiscent of a Scottish Folk Dance. Brahm s Piano Concerto No. 2 takes the piano to its limits by combining dramatic movements with melodious periods, all finishing with a finale that can be described as chattanoogasymphony.org thunderous and awe-inspiring SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY NO. 10 John Lofton, bass trombone JONATHAN McNAIR Scenic City Fanfare CHRIS BRUBECK Concerto for Bass Trombone & Orchestra SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 10 Often described as joyous, bright, and even a little adventerous, Brubeck s Concerto for Bass Trombone & Orchestra is fun and full of whimsy. Featuring John Lofton of the LA Philharmonic, this is sure to be an impressive work! Written after the death of Stalin, Shostakovich s monumental Symphony No. 10 evokes many emotions: despair, terror, darkness, light, and climactic triumph.

CLINTON The Rose of Sonora: a concerto in five scenes TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 This concert will feature the world premier of The Rose of Sonora: a concerto in five scenes. Written by Chattanooga native George S.Clinton, this concerto was crafted specifically for CSO concertmaster Holly Mulcahy. Compelling and dramatic, The Rose of Sonora is a musical narrative that takes the audience on an epic western adventure of love and revenge. One of Tchaikovsky s most beloved works, Symphony No. 4 is thought to signify Tchaikovsky s battle against his own fate, which leads to a stunning and thrilling finale.

11 Luken Holdings Pops Series Our 2018/19 Pops season is incredibly rich and diverse, with offerings from Broadway to the Motor City to the Silver Screen. We open the season with the brilliant legacy of Jerry Herman. From Mame to Hello, Dolly, you ll hear music you both know and love. Chattanooga native Scott Coulter will headline the show! Our traditional Home for the Holidays pops concert in December will be conducted by Stuart Chafetz, one of North America s most accomplished pops conductors making his debut with the CSO. And as always, Big Band Fever will light up the Tivoli with swing band music and dancing for all! I ve been wanting to bring SPECTRUM to Chattanooga for a long time, and I m thrilled that it s happening! They do a glorious tribute to the worlds of Motown and R&B and bring wonderful charts along that will make the CSO an equal partner in the evening. Our last pops concert is, I admit, a gift to myself: The Music of Star Wars! 14 Chamber Series We are happy to announce that we are continuing our partnership with Chattanooga State and their Music Department as they host us in the Humanities Theatre for the 2018/19 season. The Humanities Theatre has fixed, raked seating of up to 300, allowing for more patrons to attend. The raised stage allows all patrons to be able to see the musicians from their seat. The extra stage space enables for us to collaborate with other art forms, such as the CSO chorus. Concessions will be available at each performance for purchase and this venue offers free parking. The piece contains crisp tones, sharp rhythms, and subtle inflections that delight and intrigue audiences.
